New IntelliSTAR Product Suggestion: River Stages
« on: August 15, 2010, 07:06:22 PM »
I had an idea for all IntelliSTARs near a major river (i.e., Mississippi River): River Stages. I understand if you do not get to this, but possibly for the next IntelliSTAR update? It's important to people of Memphis when the MS River gets above flood stage. It is even more important to people near Fargo with the Red River. This would be simular to the "Tides" screen.  Thank you SO much for your consideration!

That doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I don't think there would be enough time to put something like that into a local forecast, the IntelliStar is crammed with products as it is. Sometimes there's not enough time to read everything because so much has to be showed in a certain number of seconds. If they still had a J Flavor though...

EDIT: I guess showing something like that during a Flood Watch would be the best time to show it, it shouldn't be shown on a regular basis imo.

What is taken out so that Tides can be shown? Just take that out and out River Stages in......

That's what I was thinking.

You can't take out the Tides, its essential to local boaters and tourists.

But the next closest that should be removed to allow for the river stages product is Getaway.

Hopefully that can be put in if a Flash or Flood Watch/Warn./Adv. is issued. Not only should this be programed to the IntelliStar, but also any STAR near major rivers. I'm sure there are a few legacy STAR's along those areas, and soon there'll be IntelliStar 2's, as well.

Not everyone relies on TWC for flood info... Its a good idea but its gonna go nowhere because TWCs priority now LF-wise is the IS2

This idea has been brought up by Tyler before, and I agree that it would be useful. Don't think there's enough demand for it though, and as people said, there's probably not enough room for it.

Most areas near rivers don't have Tides. If there is a Tides screen on a STAR near a river, just don't put it in, or take out Getaway.

The XL used to have a blue alert scroll to mention lake levels I believe. Perhaps a similar idea could be applied to this.

Probably the biggest factor that will prevent this feature from coming to light.... Nobody cares about the river stages until they begin to affect peoples lives. At that point there is a good chance the NWS has issued some advisory on the subject already.  Thus an alert and/or scroll would probably already be showing up

Maybe this can be chalked up to the public's apathy until it's already too late?

River stages are useful for boaters and mariners too.

Agreed.  If a local river gets at or near flood stage, we already get a crawl across the bottom of the screen.

Neat idea, but most people don't care when rivers are at normal levels.  Those who do already visit this site...

I like the idea of this, but I say it should go on the LDL or on another segment then it's own. The LDL would be the best area for this in my opinion... but it is a great idea! We get high rivers in Lansing/East Lansing alot... it'd be nice

I think it would be nice to add this.  Then when the river goes above flood stage, more information can show up detailing what is happening.  Great idea!
