I searched and saw nothing so I started it
My weatherscan added
1. Travel
2. Airport
3. Golf
4. Health
5. Garden
This is not the first time we have had the travel forecast, we had it in July 2005 for 2 weeks and then it disappeared
-
I miss the days when my Weatherscan displayed only the local forecast. :(
-
me too
-
I liked weatherscan when i saw it at hotels
-
I miss the days when my Weatherscan displayed only the local forecast. :(
Though, that was never Weatherscan's intention... Weatherscan was built around "Weather & Your Lifestyle," therefore, showing segments like golf, garden, boating, health, etc.
-
All Weatherscans used to only show a two minute local forecast back to back when it came out in 1999. That changed in 2001 when it was graphically redesigned and most areas started showing different packages (aviation, gardening, etc).
-
I don't recall seeing any of that with the Xl version of WeatherScan. I don't recall seeing that stuff until it was upgraded to the INtelliSTAR version.
-

For me that was 5 days ago
:shades:

There were still several XL units that only display the local forecast product, including mine.
-
My XL had Airport, Health, and Golf.
-
mine had golf
-
All 5 segments are GONE!!!!!
what happened?
:o
-
All 5 segments are GONE!!!!!

:o
IIRC, it's the cable headend's choice what segments to have there. I guess FPB requested them to be removed.
-
I think the whole cable headend option thing is BS. Everyone should have all applicable packages.
-
Some headends like to use all the bells & whistles, others go the KISS route. Choice in this case isn't a bad thing.
-
My XL had Airport, Health, and Golf.
Do you have video of this?
-

No, sorry. :(
-
I wish our cable company had a weatherscan but we already have 2 local all weather channels, our NBC affiliate (NBC 24 Weather Plus) and our ABC affiliate (13 ABC Weather NOW) of course they are nothing compared to the WxScan
-
I don't see why your cable company doesn't have WxScan. I get Weatherscan (101), NBC (248), and the AccuWeather channel (246) here.
-
I'd say something about Weatherscan in my area, but since Time Warner took over Comcast in DFW, we no longer have it.
-
The Weatherscan Frankfort Segment Saga continues:
On Mondey they but Airport and Travel Back, Weird. :fear:
-
I think the whole cable headend option thing is BS. Everyone should have all applicable packages.
I disagree with you partially. While all should have the more common packages like Airport and Travel, weather doesn't permit all areas to do gardening, and not all areas have interest in golf or nearby golf courses either.
-
I don't see why all WxScans can't have Local, Airport, Travel...then add others. What are all of them, anyway?
-
The ones I know of are:
Local Forecast
Additional City Forecast Packages
Local Radar
Airport
Travel
Traffic
Health
Garden
Golf
Boat & Beach
International Forecast
Other than the Local Forecast (of course) and Local Radar, all segments on Weatherscan are optional.

Hence the "applicable" part of my statement. :P
-
How come sometimes the Traffic.com screen shows and sometimes it doesn't, even if there are no traffic incidents that may prevent this screen from showing?
-
That's a good question, Mike...
-
Didn't expect to see this... While browsing Craigslist, I saw in an ad for a TV, and Weatherscan was on the screen.
http://york.craigslist.org/ele/737242292.html
Looks like the CC city is Harrisburg and Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Lebanon are on the corner radar.
-
Has anyone's weatherscan been "Skipping" (I mean like freeze for a split second.)
-
Has anyone's weatherscan been "Skipping" (I mean like freeze for a split second.)
Mine has been doing this every once in awhile for quite some time.
-
I noticed another weird thing about some Weatherscans. I noticed that some Weatherscans the airport segments are displayed as "AIRPORT" and others say "AIRPORTS." Also, for the radar segment some display "YOUR LOCAL RADAR," others show "[NAME OF CITY] RADAR" and also simply "RADAR." Any reason why?
-
Has anyone seen a Weatherscan unit that covered three airports on the airport segment?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QysPUl-X83k
-
My Weatherscan only Covers T.F Green Airport In Providence,RI and Logan Airport in Boston,MA
-
Southern NJ Weatherscans cover Philadelphia Int'l and Atlantic City arpt., and SE PA units show Philadelphia Int'l and Lehigh Valley Int'l (Allentown, PA).

It all depends on who's programming it, and what their preference is. Just like on the domestic Istar, it all depends on the preference of the person programming it to decide the moniker they use (Downtown, Metro, Area, Metro Area, Greater [city], etc).
-
My WeatherScan Intellistar is still frozen ever since 11:04:02 PM Yesterday night its stuck on the Metro West I'll get a picture of it right now
-
Your cable co. seems to be having all sorts of equipment problems!
-
Which is Comcast :run: Here's the pic

-
Wow, your weatherscan has a lot of city forecast packages! Both of mine only have 2-3.
-
now i have to wait awhile for the problem to be fixed :censored:
-
I e-mailed my Cable company about adding extra segments and here is what he said:
I appreciate your email. Unfortunately we will not offer that level of
service on Weatherscan. We have tested this service on several
occasions and have typically been met with negative response. The
majority of our customers say they want current conditions and radar as
quickly as possible meaning the need to do away with the "lifestyle"
packages that slow the rotation down.
Thanks again for your email.
-
I'm with those folks. I can't stand the lifestyles pages. Just gimme my forecast.
-

Exactly. If it were up to me, Weatherscan would be just current conditions, radar, and a forecast.
-
My thing is that they can see the cc, radar and forecast on the sides of the screen.
-
My thing is that they can see the cc, radar and forecast on the sides of the screen.
Which IMO should be ditched.
I don't mind a few segments on Weatherscan (I find the non-seasonal ones useful), just not nine segments like there is on mine now.

Yeah I always did like this original WXSCAN Istar

Does anyone have a full clip of the second song in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2CQk6f61jk) (starting at 3:15)?

No, not the second one. First one is.

I have 2 of the same WeatherScan IntellStar feeds on Ch.245 & Ch. 845 is anyone else seeing this and is there anyway of this being a problem or being permanent for WeatherScan HD in the future?
-
Can this topic be changed to "Weatherscan Discussion"?
-
What's the difference Roland? :dunno:
-
It's more of a discussion
-
It's also a topic.

I've had 2 feeds since 2004 or 05
ch. 19 & ch. 116

Nothing to worry about just something strange your cable head did.

There is no Weatherscan HD.
-
I just saw something on WxScan that I haven't seen in forever-an advertisement for Notify. It's been so long since I've seen an advertisement for Notify (of any type) that I didn't know it still even existed!

I know but i wish they took 845 Away so i can have TWC lHD Added to my HD box instead of having 2 WeatherScans on the same box

Yeah that's been there since early this month. It always existed, but they haven't promoted it much since before the BWTL relaunch.
BTW, if you can could we see a clip of your Weatherscan?

Yes could you Gary? I've never seen the Baltimore Weatherscan before.

Videos of his domestic IntelliStar are on his Gary335 YT account, but no Weatherscan.

I made a mistake in my above post. Check again.

Can't get video of my WxScan guys, sorry. Its a digital channel here, and my TV tuner doesn't get digital channels. ;)

Can't you hook either your tuner or VCR up to your cable box and record it through the cable box?
-
Yeah that shouldn't be difficult. The VCR method is what I use to record my Camden/Cherry Hill Weatherscan

Yes I probably could. And if I ever get the time/inclination to do all that I will. :twothumbs:
-
I just hook up my tuner to a cable box and twc comes up on CH 3/4.
Anyways no rush. :)

For a few months in 2004 and again for a few days in 2007, Weatherscan here was on both basic channels 119 and 120. They were from the same headend too.
-
I noticed my Weatherscan is using a backup location on the Surf report, a buoy near Islip, NY (instead of Cape May). I didn't know there was a backup feature for the surf reports! :o
-
This may be a silly question, but why don't the Philadelphia Weatherscans have local ad crawls? All I see now are the ones added by TWC. It used to show LOCAL crawls just like the domestic IntelliStars. So if they have them, why none on Weatherscan?
-

The cable may just renumbering channels.

TWC now airs basic TWC promotions on most units (even those with Ad Crawls). Your cable co must not be airing any at this point in time. My Comcast headend would air ads for months at a time, then stop, and begin again. No big deal, really.
-
Well, last Saturday marked five years since Weatherscan IntelliStar debuted in my area (9/27/03), and three years since a major update had been made (9/27/05). Right now it's in dire need of changes, but now that it is in the hands of NBC I don't see that happening.

Its not in the hands of NBC.
P.S.-I'm getting tired of saying this.
-
I wish weatherscan could come back to the basic standard lineup for my area. It used to be on CH 85 on Basic Cable for Comcast South Jersey.

Wow, I'm surprised you even knew that... I did, as I live in the same area using the same IntelliStar, heh, but still... I would like to see the return of the original Weatherscan :(
-
I am going to make a petition to force certain cable headends to put Weatherscan back in basic, analog lineups.
-

That's not going to work. Cable companies are putting Weatherscan on higher tiers because the network's ratings have dropped (due to lack of promotions for the channel). If TWC wants their ratings to go up, they should have advertise it more by showing 30-second ads for the channel before the local forecasts, and on the LF ad crawls.
-
They should advertise weatherscan I mean who the hell cares about a weak tropical storm thousands of miles away from the US mainland.
-

Yep, I remember that day very well. It was the same day my XL's transparent LDL became black. This update occured when I lived in PA and before I started going to NJ for school, so I don't remember when the Cherry Hill Weatherscan was upgraded (I've seen both the Weatherscan and domestic XL from that area though). I'm guessing it took place the same day in all headends around here. I was a little disappointed that the Weatherscan XL was gone, but I loved the new production music and eventually got used to the new look and loved it. The new music had me record many clips of Weatherscan during this era and now I'm glad I have footage of this era to share with everyone on YouTube.

It went the same day yours did... I remember because I flipped through the channel list and say the change... I did a full wtf the day the LDL bar changed because I wasn't happy at first but after a few months, I got used to it... my Local on the 8s didn't get changed to the IntelliStar until March 2004 though... I wasn't happy that day either...
-
Ugh, the traffic.com screen/narration is back. They're so annoying!
-
Any word yet when the summer segments will be turned off for the season in Philadelphia? There's no need for them anymore now that we're seeing low temperatures close to freezing.
-
Sometime at the end of October/beginning of November would be my guess.
-
They never seem to have a specific date when to end them. Last year, Garden was disabled in October, but Golf/ Boat & Beach weren't disabled until November, then Ski was immediately added thereafter. In 2006, all three summer segments were gone by the end of September and Ski was added in early December.
-
This week, the pollen report was disabled on the Philadelphia Weatherscans, and the travel cities have switched to the fall/winter cities, but we are still getting the summer segments.
-
The corner radar inset for my Camden, NJ Weatherscan has been modified slightly today. It now has Dover in it, instead of Atlantic City. I'm guessing this is associated with the changes that were made to the FiOS Weatherscan config.
This is the fourth time the corner radar had changed since it debuted in 2005, and the second time this year.

:O I concur with this change!
-
The winter schedule is underway in the Philadelphia Weatherscans (PHL and areas N & W). We're getting Ski & Snow already, which seems to come earlier and earlier each year!
-
Watch, they'll come in August next year :D
-
Yeah, seems that the earlier stores start selling Christmas stuff, the earlier TWC decides to put Ski in the playlists. :P
-
Not to be pushy, but can we move this topic to the new "WeatherScan Discussion" topic?
-
So I just went downstairs, turned on the cable box, and flipped to 101, and I found Weatherscan here at home! I'm so excited. Videos to come sometime! B)
edit: It seems to be the Chambersburg Weatherscan, which is about 50 miles to the west of here.

They could add a Hanover and/or Gettysburg Forecast segment to this unit to help serve your area better. It looks like this unit's serving area recently got expanded, but didn't update its config. Maybe you could ask the Star Team about this.
Also odd how this Weatherscan doesn't have a city title on the Station ID. Mine used to be the same way until April 2006.
BTW Billy, don't you have the Digital Basic package? I thought Weatherscan was only available on Digital Preferred or higher?

I have digital basic and get WxScan, so I guess that's not true.
-
That's odd. I wonder if it will make its way on dig. basic here then?
-
Actually, IIRC, we don't have any digital package. Just standard cable with a digital box to get some of the standard channels they've moved off the analog lineup to digital.
-
Then you probably have digital basic, like what I have here. When I picked up my box from Comcast last month (and I didn't subscribe to any specific tier) I got channels like WeatherPlus, AccuWeather, G4, Music Choice, and other channels I never had with analog cable. I looked up Comcast.com's guides and apparently I have the digital basic package, the lowest tier available w/a box, I believe.
-
digital basic is the lowest digital tier available on the box, it doesnt include weatherscan. the next tier above that is digital classic which includes most channels in the 100's, and that includes weatherscan. digital classic, without any other packages will include digital basic for all your local stations, music choice and such, but none of your standard channels below channel 100 (like food network)
-
Maybe in your area Brian, but I have digital basic and WxScan.
-
I have it here on analog basic but not digital basic. I wish I had it on digital too so I could record higher quality clips.
It would be neat if we could just order one channel like Weatherscan to add to our channel lineup, that way we wouldn't have to spend a whole lot of money subscribing to a full tier that has a whole bunch of other channels we don't need.
-
That would be nice, but unfortunately the cable industry has always been very opposed to the a la carte idea. <_<
-
Anyone ever seen a Weatherscan that has "Your Local Forecast" instead of the city name on the top?
(http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/7792/snapshot6462439sn5.th.jpg) (http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapshot6462439sn5.jpg)
Also, on this screenshot the radar is the only thing that shows on the top, and nothing else coming up. Is this a unit that shows the Radar 24/7 (except for the 2 minute LFs every 15 minutes)?
(http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/1284/snapshot6398957gn3.th.jpg) (http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapshot6398957gn3.jpg)
Seems that this Weatherscan is even more screwed up than Frankfort's! Glad I don't have to deal with any of this...
-
Very Screwed up, it is screwier than mine :P
-

Just recorded 3 WeatherScan videos of my Brockton headend will post shortly

Here's one of the Three (3 of 3)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhL6tsayq-M&fmt=18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhL6tsayq-M&fmt=18)
Other 2 coming soon!

I'll be posting more clips too since I now have a tuner
-
I'll be posting more clips too since I now have a tuner
I should be able to post clips more often than I used to, now that I am able to record my Weatherscan directly with my tuner as opposed to using a VCR. I just have to solve the issue with the audio being jumpy while recording.
I wonder when we'll see new music coming to Weatherscan. They usually come out with new music about every 1-1.5 years, and the current loop has been in use since late November/early December 2007.
-
Awesome can't wait for evan and mike's clips
Here's part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4UXIa_fW5I&fmt=18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4UXIa_fW5I&fmt=18)
And part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNfEuoMSjWY&fmt=18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNfEuoMSjWY&fmt=18)
I will try and upload more before the Snowstorm on New Year's Eve

I think I will ask someone (I'm not sure if the STAR Team or FPB) to put 2 extra Forecast Segments on for Versailles and Lawrenceburg (just like the LDL on TWC) I can't remember who mention to add forecast segments on (Mike was it?) but I figure that if People want forecast they'll like these Packages.

could you restate this sentence in a better way please? This is just one garbled bunch of a mess of words
-
You know how on our Weatherscan we have forecasts for three cities - Camden, Burlington, Gloucester City? That's what he wants to see on his Weatherscan - forecasts for Frankfort, Versallies, and Lawrenceburg. Right now it just has a Frankfort forecast. Try asking TWC STAR Team first about it, Evan.
-
Thanks for that info mike
-
Let us know and post a video if these changes take place.
-
The cable headend has to make the request, otherwise no changes will take place.

Well that didn't last long... the Spotlight ad is already gone. Now all I'm getting is the TWC ads again.
-
I have finally gotten around to uploading the rest of my narrationless Weatherscan music from the meltdown.
All 11 are now on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/beanboy89 (http://www.youtube.com/user/beanboy89)

Can the headend request what cities to use on the domestic IntelliStar as well (including radar/metro maps, etc)?

Yes. And, after they request a change on a STAR and "approve" it, the STAR Team can't make any further changes to their STAR without their permission.

Was anybody's Weatherscan Having Problems this morning?

Mine was fine.

I'm having problems right now on Camden's Weatherscan. The video is very jumpy and blurry. The audio is fine though.

It Rebooted and so did my domestic Istar

Early this morning, a new WeatherReady logo debuted on the UV index/weather safety tips screens on the Health and Ski segments. This makes the first graphical update on Weatherscan since October 2007.

Well, I got around to asking FPB about Lawrenceburg and Versailles. I'll see if I get an e-mail before 5PM...
Well, Here is the e-mail:
Versailles is part of what is sent with Frankfort on channels 19 and 32.
Don't know if L'burg could be added, but I'll ask. That's a good idea.
Thanks,
-
Hm, that's interesting. Post a clip if those segments make their way to your Weatherscan.
-
I will, and I think That's a good shot that they will! ;)

Is it me, or does the female narrator sound a bit like Kristin Dodd? I was just watching her on EE, then watched a video Mike sent to me through youtube and I definitely detect similarities in the voice, even though I doubt she's doing the narrations...

As I said in the video, the narrator's name is Amy Bargeron. She also has narrated many of TWC's sponsor graphics since 1998.

Are the IntelliStar and Weatherscan IntelliStar on the same machine or do they have two separate machines for that type of thing? I just want to be clarified on this...
-
Two seperate (but identical) machines.
-
Two seperate (but identical) machines.
Then why does the Domestic Intellistar come with Weatherscan's font (Frutiger)?

Because it can be used for either purpose, so it comes equipped for both.

I bet the Weatherscan IntelliStar comes with the Domestic IntelliStar's fonts too :P Simplicity in the eyes of the weather channel...

Well, it has to... the L-bar portion uses the interstate font, I think.

Correct. As do parts of the traffic segment.
Also, I noticed last night - on the domestic Istar, Frutiger is used for the font on the Lbar's clock.

-
Weatherscan is now showing an ad crawl about the upcoming Storm Stories season.
Yep, I saw that here on Weatherscan last night.
-
my weatherscan is now producing the after traffic ad's for traffic.com that goes like this:
"you wouldnt get into your car without a weather report. why wait for the traffic? login to traffic.com for instant traffic into. traffic dot com, isn't it time?"
it seems to do this for a few days after so many months..
(and no, this isnt for my emulator, this is the weatherscan currently in operation)
-
I was about to say the same thing, Brian. I haven't seen those ads since October!
I really hate the narrator in those ads. It sounds like an old person who is drunk or something. I preferred the original short lived narration that lasted from July-September 2005.
-
I dont even have weatherscan. That sucks.
I think Weatherscan is only available here on verizon Fios. :censored:
-
Saw another Comcast ad on Weatherscan this morning.
-
Now seeing an ad about GSN coming to Franklin Mills in Philadelphia next month. This ad was also presented on my Levittown, PA IntelliStar. The Storm Stories ad was also removed, when the season hasn't even debuted yet.
-
I wish the new WeatherScan ad said "The Weather Channel HD is officially available in your area"
-
Anyone know when we'll see some new songs added to Weatherscan? Normally we'd see playlist changes every 1-1.5 years, so we should of seen a playlist change by now.
-
I've stated it before, but any changes to Weatherscan are on hold until NBC makes a decision as to what they're going to do with it.
-
And that only makes sense. No sense in changing anything until their sure their going to hang onto WxScan. And frankly, that's exactly what I hope they decide. I'd hate to see it go.
-
As much as I hope it stays, I wouldn't be surprised if it were to be discontinued. It's ratings were likely lower than Weather Plus since it was never advertised on TWC (other than for a short time in 2005 in select areas). It would be nice if TWC would advertise it nationally so there would be more demand for it by viewers who don't receive it, and also so Comcast can bring it back to my area on digital basic cable so I can record higher quality clips for my YT viewers. Why they never did advertise it nationally I have NO idea...
-
As I've been told, Weatherscan's ratings are divided into two: the east coast headends get "fair" ratings, while the west coast ratings are very dismal, while the central states are kind of in between. As sad as it is, I only see two possible outcomes of this: NBC is ditching it, or they will add news content into it somehow. Whether that's a simplified version (through RSS or something), or actual news inserts is anyone's guess.
I could easily see them adding news, and I don't think it'd be that bad, honestly. The L-bar concept would work well...
-
I miss the '04 Weatherscan :(

How come you can't view the Marlton Weatherscan or is there no Weatherscan in Marlton? :dunno:

I'm at the NJ coast right now, and the TV with the digital box is in use. I get Weatherscan in Marlton too (that's where the Camden/Cherry Hill Weatherscan videos come from).

Just discovered that my Weatherscan has had extra forecast cities added to it. Gettysburg, Hagerstown, and Hanover have been added to the pre-existing Chambersburg and Carlisle. Also, the corner radar was changed, adding Hagerstown, and removing Chambersburg, and there are now two main radars, a regional one, and a more local one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwsvCwapgTU# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwsvCwapgTU#)
-
Wow, that Hagerstown radar is way too zoomed out. Reminds me of that statewide radar my Weatherscan used to have. IMO, they should have a local radar centered on Hagerstown for that segment, then have the regional radar for the Radar segment.
-
Billy mentioned that his Weatherscan recieved an update, The Atlanta Weatherscan recieved one as well. My original cities were Atlanta, Marietta, Douglasville and Dallas, now they are Atlanta, Woodstock, Alpharetta and Marietta which is more local than Douglasville and Dallas,Ga were. Also on the Local Radar segment, the radar was shifted north to include the new cities and removed Douglasville and Dallas from the maps, the radar map and the lower left hasn't changed. The new local radar looks similar to this one except it includes more cities to the north such as Rome,Ga:

I wish Weatherscan had a music upgrade by now! :ermm:
-
Evan: Just be fortunate you don't have Rock Hill, SC's Weatherscan.
Alex: I agree. I know changes are on hold, but they could at least update the playlist. I wouldn't think it would take a whole lot of effort to do that. A lot of people ask me when they are changing the music.
-
I wish Weatherscan had a music upgrade by now! :ermm:
I do too, but I also miss the playlist they had during the early days of the Weatherscan IS.
-
Here's what i sent to the weather channel regarding my plea (3 years is an estimate :P)
Hello The Weather Channel,
Regarding Weatherscan i'm wondering if WeatherScan could get a playlist upgrade?
The same 30 or so songs have been playing over and over again for the past 3 years and i was wondering if any new music could be added anytime soon like Trammell Starks for example?
Thank you again The Weather Channel ,and i hope this problem is fixed soon.
-
We should be seeing spring/summer segments airing soon as they usually launch late March/early April. As of today we're still getting Ski. When I see summer segments I'll post my next clip on youtube.

Yes, the Star Team told me they just started switching Weatherscans to the summer segments last week. The headends here should be switched soon. They go from south to north.
-
I'm seeing a Pollen Report right now on Atlantic City's Weatherscan, which is usually a sign that the summer segments are here or coming soon. Is anyone getting summer segments yet?
-
My Garden segment has taken over for the Ski and Snow segment now.
-
Okay, it will be awhile before I get the chance to capture my Weatherscan's summer playlist. I should have it up within a few weeks, though.
-
darn i wish this Scan playlist would change :itsok:

as of today my brockton headend now shows garden instead of ski. also the palmer drought moniter is temporaly unavaliable

As of Today, there are no new segments or forecast segments

Wow, the Boat & Beach segment has a lot more locations on the water temps map than there has been in years. Last year there were only about 4 or 5 locations along the east coast, now there's some far off sea, and even one in Lake Michigan!
-
just stinky health and garden here <_<
-
I really wish Weatherscan was available in the more basic cable tiers. Why is it always available on the more- expensive -digital tier? Viewership would increase that way IMO.
-

Because viewership had dropped in recent years, resulting them in moving it to higher tiers (most areas you need Digital Classic to view it). Still, I find it odd how I have Weatherscan on analog basic, but not digital basic. You would think they'd have it on digital basic too if you can view it on analog.

For those who may not have seen the IntelliStar version of the Thundersnow icon, here it is! I recorded this during the March 1st, 2009 Snowstorm in a HiRad Outage, My backup location is the airport, which is where he observation came from.

Thats cool, but the new intellistar icons make it look like rain, the old icons were better! <_<
Anyway if I remember correctly there were two early XL versions of weatherscan and I was wondering if v.2 had an air quality forecast anywhere in the segments.
-
I looked at the old product guide and there didn't seem to be such a feature. It was likely introduced with the launch of the IntelliStar Weatherscan product in 2003.
-
I wtf'ed.
I got me a TV Listing app for my iPhone. After setup, I scroll through to see the listings. I hit channel 116..and...it's Weatherscan. I don't have digital cable, so I can't confirm it, but Comcast's site doesn't list it...

As much as I enjoy having those products, they already said majority preferred only local forecasts, so don't count on those being added.

Mine did too, also the IntelliStar was down at that time (I think), there was a Sat LF. I wasn't able to record Weatherscan here rebooting because by the time I opened up WinTV, it returned back to normal. I don't even remember the ID all I remember is that it started off with 019---. Maybe I'll be able to catch it next daylight savings in March. Last night was the first time I saw Weatherscan return to normal automatically after rebooting, the weirdest thing was the radar wasn't able when they were showing the LF for Atlanta, but when the LF for Marietta came up the radar was back to normal.

I have a clip of it that I can upload this afternoon.

The current temp conditions and forecasts for my IntelliStar and Weatherscan are slightly different why is this? It's never been different before. :dunno:
-
Maybe the Weatherscan site is for a different section in Atlanta than the LOT8s site (i.e. a different zip code may be entered). Or, one of the two may just didn't update the weather data when you caught those screenshots.
-
Weatherscan may be using Atlanta Airport, while the Istar is clearly using Downtown.

I hope my cable company is stupid enough to refer to Weatherscan as "The Weather Channel" because the line-up I saw, said that and the Lineup goes into effect in June, the end of our cable's transition from analog to digital. while it referred to a local 24/7 weather sub-channel as "WTVQ wx scan" It worries me a little...

My cable box's guide just says "Weather" for Weatherscan so it's possible that it's just a mistake...

Good News here for Weatherscan! Plant Board keeping Weatherscan until at least 2020...
The directors agreed to a 10-year contract to keep the Weatherscan channel. Higginbotham said it is one of the most popular channels on the basic cable lineup.
The Weatherscan agreement includes a 6 percent rate increase, but Higginbotham said that’s within his budget.

I wish I had WeatherScan. I wish my cable company, Charter, would get it. Would not have to wait for Local on the 8s or for 30 minutes during the long-form programming.

The STAR team could get that info for you, but I wouldn't ask unless you had an issue with it and ask what the ID was to go along with that.

Yes. It had to rebooted several times because it was frozen. It came on in the afternoon sometime last week after a freeze.

Basically, the ID number for any IntelliStar (including the Weatherscan IntelliStar) can be used to show an approximate age of the unit. Units from 2003 (which is when the IS was first introduced) are down in the low 20000s. The ID numbers generally increase with each unit that is rolled out. New units are now in the low 30000s, which basically infers that about 10,000 IntelliStar (and Weatherscan IntelliStar) units have been added in the past seven years.
-
Anyone Else's Weatherscan been "Skipping" or the radar go out about 2-2.5 hours ago? My radar went out then by the time it came back, it was kinda "skipping" where both the audio and video froze for a split second.
-
Our Weatherscan in Topeka "skips" (basically freezes for a second) often. It completely freezes all the time, tho. It's been frozen since 10:40PM. It's now 1:22AM. This has been happening since the day we got it on May 19th.

Agreed, and it is now an hour later (2:06AM) and it is still froze, showing the time as being 10:41:00...

kinda like how, my Intellistar is 23273, but how Weatherscan is 20271, meaning when Weatherscan Intellistar was introduced we still had an XL.
-
I just got off the phone with Cox. She submitted the problem and before I even got off the phone with her she said they wrote her back and will reset the IntelliStar and look into the constant freezing problem. Weatherscan is now off air so they must be resetting it.

You always beat me too it when I come to report a problem! As of right now (11:38AM) it is running...but none of the local forecasts for the three cities we have are showing up. :dunno:
-
You tuned in right after the reset by Cox. It takes a little bit for everything to load back in. They reset it at 11:30am so you would have started watching right after that. Everything is loading in now and coming back up.
It was kinda "cool" to watch all the maps and data go from temp unavailable and the radar saying "Past 5 mins" to being almost fully loaded. Of course it is doing the whole "skipping" thing that others were reporting earlier. Very annoying. Oh well.
-
Yes, everything appears to be working 100% now...which is something I have not seen since WcScan came on!
-
Wait, are you guys seeing normal TWC in lieu of Weatherscan if the unit is down? :dunno:
-
Our Weatherscan was just rebroadcasting TWC all day.....so we had 3 TWC channels, HD, SD, and WxScan SD.
-

That's odd, I didn't know they were capable of overriding Weatherscan's feed with TWC's feed.

They probably could if they wanted to, as it is an Intellistar unit but TWC is more like an emergency feed for Weatherscan, always the satellite feed of TWC. Usually the TWC feed during a time when the unit is rebooting has very low volume of audio and sometimes the video feed would be of higher brightness and/or contrast. Mike might be able to clarify since he is the resident Weatherscan expert. :P
-
My Weatherscan shows a national TWC feed as well, although there's no audio. I've seen others though (such as Camden) that show a black screen when the unit is off.

That's very odd.......
-
The units aren't capable of producing the TWC feed. It's the cable company simulcasting TWC on the channel Weatherscan is supposed to be on.
-
I finally found a snapshot of a Weatherscan reboot on Silicondust! Odd enough to say that it was The FiOS Weatherscan in Richmond. (zip 23221)
-
In regards to the TWC feed being shown on Weatherscan when Intellistar is out we don't get that. If it's out either it's frozen or the DVR says "Channel Temporarily Unavailable" because no signal is being put out on that channel. (It just rebooted after being frozen for 4 hours and a very explosive call to Cox in which I lost my cool.)
-
Has anyone noticed how the clouds on the new icon set seem to animate along with the beat of the Weatherscan music? Lol, kinda silly, but I thought I should mention it. :P
-
I wish Trammell Starks would be played 24/7 just like the old days on WeatherScan :blushing:
-
If only they could at LEAST change the playlist on Weatherscan, it isn't that hard to do. Or even just revert back to one of the previous playlists, such as the 2005-2006 one (my favorite).

I concur. Gone are the days of Trammell Starks being played on Weatherscan 24/4. That happened ever since the Weatherscan IntelliStar version 1 first went on the air. May that return someday. :(

What are your opinions about Weatherscan?
As far as its future? Current product? I believe we aren't going to see any radical changes to the overall system for some time to come however NBC/TWC is starting to renew interest in it as evident by the Dish/Weatherscan deal thats supposed to happen. Trammell certainly wont return and if there is any changes to the music I imagine it would be something more modern/rockish/etc to attract wider audiences. Probably its a good thing they aren't interested in changing it

It would be interesting to see if they're developing in WxScan again and going to change the playlist. Since I'm no Weatherscan expert, I think 4 Trammell songs are used on the current playlist lineup, and none of them are from CD One.

Correct, nothing from CD 1, most are from CD 3

Does anybody know if the Intellistar auto-updates the time? Our time on Weatherscan keeps jumping around almost every day. One day it's up to 5 minutes ahead, then behind, sometimes it's right. Just curious.
-
I noticed something when I flipped to Weatherscan this morning...
Notice the font on the black ticker...
-
I noticed something when I flipped to Weatherscan this morning...

I noticed this too. Kinda looks good and I understand why they did it.
-
the new font looks so bloated and the scroll is moving x3 slower, i can't believe it took that long to make one minor change.
-
MAN! Ya'll beat me to it. :cry3: :P
It looks more like Hit The Road than Interstate, to me.
-
It looks more like Hit The Road than Interstate, to me.
Weatherscans font is called Frutiger. As for Hit the Road TWC would never use that exact font
-
Was just coming on to see if anybody else noticed that it was larger today. I like it. A couple of our cities changed too, I think. I was watching at my moms yesterday and about 1pm everything but the bottom scroll went black and then it popped back up with the severe weather mode template but no information except the bottom ticker. Happened for about 4 seconds and came back up in normal operation mode.
-
Our lower left corner mini-radar is gone now. When the main screen radar came on it popped off and hasn't come back on. Now our main screen radar is saying Temp Unavailable. Wonder what they're doing? Anybody else getting this?
-
My radar isn't working either.
-
Seems like it rebooted it went back to "Past 5 Mins"
Or a nationwide Freeze :P
-
Yeah, ours just started loading in too.
-
Perhaps it had something to do with that "jumping" thing the radar was doing since last week?
-

Maybe, The Radar/Satellite rebooted also so that might be the case.

The "old" Weatherscan that is in the upper left corner is Frutiger. The L-bar is all Interstate.
-
Dish has been internally testing Weatherscan, and requested the font on the crawl be easier to read. The solution to that was to change from Interstate Condensed to Interstate Bold.
-
Wait, so does that mean that the dish network version of weatherscan will launch soon?

It's a good change.

IMO, the whole channel should be in one font or the other. It looks rather awkward how it is now, especially when both the corner radar and main radar are seen at once.

Can someone post a picture please? Until tomorrow, I'm not able to view Weatherscan until I get a new cable box since my HDTV is on the fritz.

Why is your Weatherscan still using the old icons?
Never mind…I answered my own question by watching the video. The spinning IntelliStar logo is just mesmerizing. I like the song that was playing.
-
Did anyone else notice the Palmer Drought Severity areas got smaller? Instead of large areas for reports it's now showing parts of counties instead of about 4-10 counties together. So areas where it's dry or wet are much smaller in area than they were. At least that's what Sat Sep 18 is showing.

TWC has been in the process of doing this for years, as I think the FiOS Weatherscan in Pittsburgh is like this.

It was an error. They were showing the new icons, but just recently they started showing the '06-'10 set.

Palmer Drought map must've been messed up the other day because it's back to showing large areas again.

I know this question may seem dumb, but is it possible for Weatherscan to go back to the cheeseball (1998-2006) icons when it has an error?

If it wasn't a new set this year, probably so, but I doubt it would now that there's this new icon set, it'll most likely do what it did in that video and revert to the 2006-2010 icon set.

That must have been it. A nationwide reboot to replace summer segments. Even though a certain two units didn't need it. :P

Well, now, that does look a bit scholarly! :)
How interesting that your Weatherscan has advertising on the bottom scroll bar. Ours has only one ad - an invitation to watch "Wake Up With Al" which appears intermittently. Otherwise, it's just an empty blue bar across the bottom of the screen.
-
My satellite on the satrad is frozen, the radar moves fine.

That isn't my Weatherscan... but I do get some local ads here from time to time (mostly Comcast ads). Otherwise it's just the TWC ads.

Yeah, because i have the same provider and pretty much the same stuff you do, i just don't have the "Traffic" like most of the city locations.
-
i just don't have the "Traffic" like most of the city locations.
The Weather Channel didn't renew its contract with Traffic Pulse, so no one has the traffic reports on the local forecast or on Weatherscan anymore.

It can happen. When Weatherscan reboots, it defaults to the TWC feed until the the graphical local portion of Weatherscan returns. If TWC happens to be in a commercial when the reboots occurs, you'll see the commercial.
-
Oh... I see.
-
I noticed they have changed the wording on the city ID screen that appears at :00/:15/:30/:45. It used to say "Weatherscan is only available on [insert cable provider name here]." It now says "Weatherscan is brought to you by The Weather Channel and [insert cable provider name here]."

Noticed that yesterday.

It's been like that here since around mid-March. The new phrase makes much better sense, IMO.
-
I don't get Weatherscan at school so I just noticed it yesterday.
-
Now that I've had Weatherscan for a year it's getting boring seeing the same stuff on different maps all the time. There needs to be more original content. Less same forecast or conditions, different screen. I'd still like to see it have a national segment instead of travel or both. Our Travel regional forecast maps are based out of Oklahoma City for some reason. Never understood why it wasn't based around Topeka or even Kansas City.
-
it would be nice if there was more variety to WeatherScan, maybe adding some new "localized" segments for that specific headend's location.

It looks horrible! I wonder when they will change it to say "Weatherscan is brought to you by TWC and XFINITY" instead of Comcast...
OT: I also think that the new XFINITY logo on the Station ID...it's on the verge of covering the channel number.

Best way is to contact TWC's public relations and let them know your cable company is interested.

Looks like the Brockton, MA Headend got an update (The Radar/Satellite has been moved)

I don't know what it is but something seems different on our Weatherscan. I'm also thinking we got switched over to winter segments? Our Garden and Golf segments are both gone this evening. The Outdoor Activities screen seems different, too. Maybe I just haven't been watching it much lately...? Is there a "it's late and I might actually be losing my mind" smiley somewhere?

mine usually gets switched from garden to Ski so i'll check when I'm home later

Well that's weird... we have Garden & Golf back today. They didn't show at all yesterday evening through the night. I thought it was a little too early to be switching us over to the Winter segments. Even if our forecast lows are in the 40's some nights.

Is anyone still getting the summer segments on weatherscan? We are here in Philly and they are usually turned off and switched to Ski for the season here around late October...

We still have summer in Topeka, KS. I was wondering why we still were. Figured maybe since we were still getting into the 60's that was why. We don't get Ski & Snow or anything.
-
Issue with the ski package, which is delaying the enabling of the winter segments. I hear that the winter segments should be turned on by Thanksgiving.

Thanks :)

I thought something was up when we got the Weather Ready messages switched over to winter preparedness ones.
On another note, they did mostly fix the forecast time period bug. It's not saying the wrong date anymore on the black bar ticker. It is still switching over to Tonight at Midnight and then the next day forecast at 4pm until Midnight when it switches back over to Tonight, however.

Well here, they USED to disable Garden around early October since that is when the growing season ends here, and then Golf and Beach later in the month. That stopped around 2008... not sure why since that made better sense... and now they just let it run until whenever Ski is added. Right now we're still getting all 3 summer segments, although certain products on Health and Garden are inapplicable now (such as the pollen report and watering needs index). If the ski issues are still being worked on then they could at least disable the other seasonal data until the spring.

The Pittsburgh Verizon FiOS head-end has now added Washington and Gibsonia to Weatherscan. And I thought that Verizon has abandoned Weatherscan altogether. :club:
-
On one of Javier's recent videos, where the IntelliStar failed mid-forecast, you can see an ad crawl talking about Weatherscan and FIOS. You can see that the ad crawl says "Weatherscan is now more local! Verizon FIOS TV cust..." (that's all that you can see before the IS cuts out).

I really like how the L-bar cities change now too, makes people get their forecasts even quicker than before.
-
I wonder if there was a way to allow multiple CC's to show on WeatherScan
like a rotation of 4 Current Conditions Cities on the WeatherScan headend to show right here: Brockton, Taunton, Waltham, Barnstable in this area pictured.

That is possible, see Stumbleaudiojazz's recent video

Even the LA one? That one already had a lot of cities as it is, then again the elevations there vary a lot.

Considering we haven't had winter weather at all this season, and our extended forecast is now ending in the 80's... might as well be switched over to summer packages across most of the country at this point. Our pollen screen is already showing with 107 being todays pollen count. Ugh. No wonder I'm sneezing so much today. When do they usually start switching packages over to summer? I know it's a headend to headend basis.
-

Late March/early April.
-
Our Weatherscan segments got switched over to the spring/summer themes today.
-
Our Health segment is still showing winter safety tips, even though we've been switched over to the spring/summer packages. :dunno:

They are usually changed around April 15th or so.

The Garden and Golf segments have returned for the season on my Weatherscan as of today
-
We have the summer segments here as well as of late last week.
-
I've been getting no report on the allergy report on the health segment pretty much since last year during the spring/summer months. Should I report this to the STAR team?

Well... that's subtle. :)
Red text on a blue background like that looks horrible. I know the video quality of this clip is bad, but I doubt it looks any better at full resolution, either.

Well that left much to be desired. Where's the rebooting? Where's the spinning Weatherscan logo? Where's the action? :P

Found this video of the Comcast logo changing to the Xfinity logo on the Memphis Weatherscan...
It's possible certain segments had the xfinity logo at the time, while others had the older logo. Then again, there are some changes that can be made to Weatherscan that doesn't require a reboot (i.e. the TWC logo change from blue to green).
-
It's 1:00am CT and our Weatherscan is just a black screen. Is anyone else not getting Weatherscan right now? I called Cox and of course they told me it's most likely a problem on my end. I asked if she'd submit the problem to the engineers and she said she would. (I doubt she will.) It was working fine earlier. It doesn't even give me a no signal screen from the digital box.
EDIT: After two calls to Cox (and them telling me it's on my end) and a post on their Facebook page (with more understanding people that reported it to the engineers), it's back up and running as of Noon CT 7/24/12.

Wow, dumb Charter. They must want people to actually like the long-form over on regular TWC.
If you've ever seen Weatherscan in severe WX mode, you may have heard the 4 beeps to tell you there is an alert. I have noticed, unlike TWC, there is no narration after 3 of the beeps saying "A _________ warning has been issued for your area." followed by 3 more beeps. I hate this, as it tricks people into thinking a warning was just issued when one wasn't. I also think upon the issuance of an SVS, there should have been a narration saying "A _________ warning in your area has been updated." Just my opinion.

People will know that a warning was just issued with the narration, but w/o it people may be fooled into thinking that another warning was issued when in reality it's just re-scrollig the one previously issued.

Look at this:
I also think upon the issuance of an SVS, there should have been a narration saying
I never said they should fix it, end of story. The preceding is the final statement I will make on the matter.
-
Guys, that's enough arguing here. Nathan, you need to be a little more receptive as everyone else is allowed to have an opinion about your opinion on things, too.
-
I agree with Nathan. I think it should say a warning has been issued. The whole reason it does it is for the blind. It needs a lot more narration on the channel. Maybe that will be a part of the next version?

On weather.com's knowledge base, it says if your cable company doesn't carry Weatherscan they "recommend that you contact your local service provider and let them know that you would like to get Weatherscan." Does this mean I can ask the customer support team for Charter Communications in Astoria and ask if they could carry Weatherscan? Just curious...
Note: Sorry for double posting.

Yes, that would be the best department to contact.

Atlantic City Boardwalk, NJ WeatherScan

Wow, same exact config as I last saw in 09
-
We don't have Weatherscan down here in Daytona Beach, and I really wish we did, especially now.
Our local cable company runs its own "travel weather" channel, which has really improved very recently, but it's still travel weather, not a channel about local weather. Once upon a time, two local broadcast stations ran their own local weather digital substations. Then, just under two years ago, it was down to one. And now we're down to zero. The Weather Channel certainly doesn't offer 24-hour local weather anymore, unless you want to rely on the LDL every ten minutes or so throughout large parts of the day.
So, we're now down to zero channels you can turn on at any time to quickly get the current weather and a quick forecast. Weatherscan would be quite welcome right now, but I guarantee Bright House isn't going to be adding it anytime soon. Or at all.

any video of it?

Nothing on YouTube that I found. All I could do would be to shoot some video from my camera and hope for the best in terms of quality.
Basically, the channel shows weather maps of central Florida with upcoming forecasts, and then shows airport conditions around the region, the country, and some international destinations, too.
-
Hmm, it appears as if the local radar map got zoomed in on the Tampa weatherscan.. I'm thinking it might be like that now because of the addition of new cities to the unit and I'd assume that Sarasota, Pasco, and Polk Counties have different map views for those other cities than Tampa.

Jackson, MS got WeatherScan on Tuesday, per a friend of mine. It's on channel 100 strangely. Notice how at the top it says "Your Local Forecast" instead of "Jackson". Again, I didn't record this, it was recorded by a friend of mine.

Last night, in anticipation of the time change, I DVR'd Weatherscan. I caught the Central Time change at 2:00 local time, but I also caught this. Somehow my unit got confused during the Eastern Time change (presumably something to do with TWC changing their time since they are in Eastern Time).
TWC - Memphis Weatherscan goes crazy during Eastern Time change! (Weatherscan Reboot) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQaqmOTRLps#ws)
It's kind of a long video, so here are some key times in the video at which something is actually going on:
0:20 - Eastern Time change occurs
0:22 - The unit tries to go to Current Conditions, but goes back to the Extended Forecast
0:38 - The 5 Day Forecast disappears
0:39 - The products disappear
2:11 - The 5 Day Forecast reappears
2:12 - The products reappear, appearing to rush through the products that it missed
2:16 - The products again disappear
2:26 - The 5 Day Forecast again disappears
3:11 - Everything disappears except for the CC ticker
3:21 - The CC ticker freezes and the music stops
3:53 - The unit reboots
4:22 - The unit returns to normal
7:23 - The Current Conditions, for some reason, become unavailable
12:22 - The Current Conditions return
-
Trevor, the time didn't change because the time change happens at 2 AM local time (meaning 1:59:59 to 3:00:00 ;)). As for the Weatherscan glitches you experienced, those were probably effects of the time change happening on TWC's end (seeing how they're in Eastern time)
-
 That explains a lot...I fixed the title and description. Thanks.
-
It seems that the perfect time to see a Weatherscan glitch is at the start and at the end of DST. I wish my current cable headend had Weatherscan :(

Back in ye old 2007, I loved listening to the music and I liked all the imagery. I don't know what it was, but it was so simple and nice. So I'm delighted there are other people who enjoy it. Too bad I don't have cable anymore. What a freakin shame.

The annual time change "meltdown" occurred once again this year. No reboot, but this happened, total background failure. Video to come later.
EDIT: Included better screenshot than one taken with iPhone camera.

Snooping around on SiliconDust and found what appears to be a Weatherscan unit in Flint, MI.

According to Wikipedia, Weatherscan appears to be defunct as of February 2nd. Is this true, or was I looking at a vandalized page?
-
I'm sure TWC would have said something by now, or Comcast, or Time Warner Cable, or whoever has a weatherscan unit.
As for now, If there are no references, it might be vandalised. Is anyone experiencing down-time on their own weatherscan??

WeatherScan still works here in MA on channels 245/845
-
Whoever edited that didn't do much of any research before editing. It sounds like Weatherscan was down on their end so they assumed it dead for everyone. It's still up, running just like normal. Edits have been reverted by me on Wikipedia.
-
For the first time, I had trouble with WS springing forward. Once the forecast segment at 1:59am ended, the quarter-hour segment (with town name) didn't cue right at 3am and the bottom portion of the L-bar failed. This was a cycle mostly repeated for the next almost ten minutes. I should have a video up by later today.
A more pertinent question would be, why does this happen at all? Why should losing an hour (on the system, the equivalent of skipping a number) affect the graphical presentation so much? Background glitches and graphical element resets... Is it just a problem of how it gets the signal from TWC?

It's mostly on the intermountain and west coast regions from what I'm hearing. Ratings, although generally are only mediocre at best anywhere, are especially worse out there. So it doesn't surprise me.
-
They seriously keep track of ratings for channels like Weatherscan? What's the point? :dunno: It's not like it's expected that people are just sitting there looking at it for hours on end.
-
I guess if the backlash from customers continues Comcast will soon regret their decision and re-add Wxcscan back to the lineups :dunno: but I doubt it.

No. Don't count on it, either. Remember, development on Weatherscan has been stopped indefinitely for years.

Oh okay. That explains why the weather icons are still the same.
Moving on now, here are snapshot images of two Frontier FiOS Weatherscans, one from Seattle and one from Portland, OR. Both pics were downloaded from SiliconDust last year and have been recently found on my computer.

Crap. I'm usually the one on the lookout for those but I went to bed "early" last night and forgot to set the DVR.

FPB has posted a notice explaining that our Weatherscan unit will be out for a few days, with repairs coming next week. They say they'll be running a simulcast of The Weather Channel complete with LOT8s until it's fixed, but I think they'll just stick with the national feed.
EDIT: Took about 5 days but they finally started simulcasting the SD Intellistar feed on 19 until WS is fixed. One problem though, they're simulcasting TWC SD on the HD feed too. So channel 19, 49 and 549 are showing the exact. same. thing.

WeatherScan has finally lost it
The issue with the missing sky conditions for the nighttime daypart text forecasts on the squeezeback have been fixed as of a few weeks ago. However now there seems to be a new issue with many units where the clock is often several minutes fast.
-
Pretty much all day, Weatherscan hasn't had a background. I assume when the unit tried to get the green logo for Earth Day, the entire background corrupted and is just showing a light blue background behind the individual product panes. No TWC or Weatherscan logo on screen.
-
On some days, my intellistar crashes alot. (Crashes = Loss of CC on the side) Like yesterday, it crashed 3 times in 2 hours.
-
So when you say It crashes it just looses the CC report and doesn't reboot?
-
It is occasional, usually short lived. But by the time it comes back, I am usually in bed.
-
So it's just a loss of CC. Not the whole thing freezes??
-
Its just the CC.
It mostly happens on Fridays and Saturdays.
-
It's probably that your headend unit is loosing the connection to TWC. I don't know if it is temporary but I would let your provider know this is happening.
-
IK why now, its because new data is being fed in.
-
Has anyone seen these? just saw both this morning.
-
Yes. My weatherscan did that last year. It was only a second though and everything would regenerate.
-
The Low 999º glitch that was happening earlier this evening has also affected Weatherscan as well. Just checked multiple photos posted on TWC's Facebook page to confirm this.
-
btw, I went to bed earlier on Saturday night but set my DVR, and on cue... time change problems like always. Starts only at 1am EST when the main window and bottom of the L-bar failed. Eventually, the whole background but the conditions ticker failed (1:02:02am EST). Finally failed out to the TWC SD feed at 1:02 EST, stayed there for a few seconds and went into full reboot. It returned to normal promptly at 1:03:03am.
I'll hopefully have a video up Friday night when I get back home. (I just checked it from my SlingPlayer today.)

Y'know, I'm kind of curious to know why some units glitch during time change and then other units aren't affected by the time change. Does it depend on the cable headend?
-

Quite possibly could be due to age, even though I've seen more than one headend unit do this and it's been doing it for a few years. Even after new parts (last December) it's done this twice now (springing forward and falling back).
-
The narration has been discontinued and Jim Cantore narrates when there is a severe weather bulletin only. An unexpected change.
-
All narrations are gone and replaced with Cantore on bulletin http://youtu.be/rqRO63-lQ6E (http://youtu.be/rqRO63-lQ6E)

Hmmm, it's kinda strange how The Weather Channel would just discontinue all of the Amy Bargeron Vocal Local, but add a new Jim Cantore narration only to the Weather Bulletin product. I wonder if TWC will add more of Cantore's narrations to Weatherscan later. Who knows? :dunno:

That does seem odd. I haven't yet heard Jim on mine thanks to the quiet weather, though that might change tomorrow night. Not sure how good of a tuner clip I would get over my sling box, but I could try.
Weatherscan's had that narration for over 10 years now and I've had it on in the background a lot in that time, it's genuinely out of place to not hear the narration. I wonder if this means the beginning of narration of warnings too and perhaps a change in alert tone...
-
i find it kind of surprising to hear there are no female announcements anymore, and for right now, the music is playing cleanly without vocal interruption!
Also, I wonder how abandoned weatherscan really is if they sent an update to it!
-
Tried to record longer but it came out to 1 min
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5scRU3yxnl8#)
-
So my Weatherscan has been having an interesting error lately. I'm going to contact someone on Star Support about this at a later time.
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibkNdpBqZXQ#)
Music was inserted by me because my tuner didn't record any audio.

In a monumentally stupid decision, TWC seems to have disabled straight passthrough of NWS warnings to the unit. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued just west of here and the ticker just says "a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for a portion of the viewing area. Remember if a severe thunderstorm threatens; take shelter indoors. Stay away from windows." The alert tone has been updated to match the IS2 while Cantore narrates the text. Why was this in any way necessary?

This is part of the new FCC regulation requiring emergency messages to be read out loud.

This creates an issue especially with weatherscans that serve large areas, because then locations are not mentioned in the warning messages.
-
Not sure if anyone's noticed but the TWC logo has been removed from Weatherscan.
-
Yeah I've noticed it too. Either a TWC logo change/update is coming, weatherscan is going to be more focused on being separate from TWC or an update to weatherscan is coming, or a glitch. The latter of which I think it is. :)
-
Not a glitch, but removing of old branding from what I've heard.
-
Not a glitch, but removing of old branding from what I've heard.
"Old branding" huh? What's old about it other than maybe the shading of the logo?
-
I'm putting my money on the missing logo being a glitch.... I'm 99% sure this has happened before.
-
I can affirm that Mike is correct on the change in branding. Nothing beyond that though on the reasoning and the developing purpose.. Thoughts of my own are having to do with Local Now stuff..
-
I'm putting my money on the missing logo being a glitch.... I'm 99% sure this has happened before.
I think the glitch you're thinking about is when Weatherscan lost the whole background, including both the TWC and Weatherscan logos. Weatherscan is only missing the TWC logo right now.
-
I feel like Weatherscan is getting for the worse. TWC logo gone, channel disappearing from top cable companies, still not upgrading to HD, no upgrade to IS2 either.
I have no idea as to how long Weatherscan will last.
-
As far as what I can make out, I'm pretty sure Local Now is going to be the successor to weatherscan. It's a bit odd that after 3 years since the new HD graphics launch, they still haven't upgraded the graphics.
Does anyone know if Local Now is a Sling TV exclusive? Maybe TWC are going to push this to other providers eventually.
-
With the release of the LocalNow app on Android and iOS, TWC is allowing people to sign in with their cable provider accounts to watch it.
-
At this rate, my general feeling is that Local Now is obviously the successor to the Weatherscan service but for at least the near future, they'll operate concurrently. Even up to last summer, TWC was still signing agreements with cable providers and co-ops that included a Weatherscan clause. The channel is pretty cheap, even with maintenance of 13 year old computers. The way I see it is pretty much in line with what someone around here said a few years ago. Weatherscan will continue, as is, no major changes until all the machines stop running or so few are in operation that TWC can't justify the cost anymore. Even with the migration to online weather information and Local Now, Weatherscan remains a very popular service when available to subscribers. I mean here, the channel gets numbers on par with ESPN, that also makes it a very enticing option for businesses who want to advertise.
So yes, the channel has to go off-air eventually, just not for a few more years at the least.

This is what I wanted to post. You just phrased it a hell of a lot better.
The fact that it's still popular proves that there's still a demand for it. I just think TWC needs to advertise it for once, and maybe more cable providers would take up an interest in it (if it happens, which I doubt).
And I'm shocked that the ratings for it where you are rival ESPN. That's surprisingly good for a looping local forecast! Lol
EDIT: one more thing: if Local Now is weatherscan's replacement, then they should update the graphics to look more like the concept video instead of whatever they're doing with it now. I thought they wanted some sort of graphical continuity between everything?
-

I think partly the reason why Weatherscan draws more viewers where you are is the fact that it is on a two digit channel, and included with your company's basic service. Where I live it's been exclusive to the premium digital tier on channel 101 since Weatherscan came to our neighborhood in 2001, so ratings had always been mediocre at best (a lot of people couldn't afford digital cable back then). Of course in the mobile age we are at now it's only gotten worse from there.
-
Weatherscan now reads alerts on the weather bulletins (instead of just using the generic message). Video to come.

This is very much welcome news! I should have thought to check last night when we were under a severe thunderstorm warning? Was it on the main audio feed or the DVS/SAP feed?
Also noticed that the copyright changed during the quarter hour segments. All references to The Weather Channel are gone and have been replaced with "Weather Group Television" (i.e. "Weatherscan is brought to you by Weather Group Television and Frankfort Plant Board Cable"). Looks like "Weather Group Television" is the name of what used to be The Weather Company's TV division. (Apologies if this is posted somewhere else around here, I don't visit often.)
Glad to see the channel at least getting some attention.
btw, here's Weather Group Television's logo: http://weathergroup.com/sites/default/files/images/weathergrouplogo.jpg (http://weathergroup.com/sites/default/files/images/weathergrouplogo.jpg)

It was on the main audio feed. I also believe they switched to the same feed the IS2 uses, as the weather bulletins are phrased the exact way as the IS2 now. The "F"'s are still omitted on the 36-48 hour forecast, however.
Also, Airport Delays now come from Flightaware.com instead of the FAA. While I don't mind the change it would be nice if half the delay info wasn't blank. <_<

Just wondering, when did they get rid of the airports on the ticker? You know: "Louisville Airport: 80° Cloudy, No Delay"
-

They're still there, at least I saw it this morning. You're probably not seeing it because the delay information isn't available, as it seems to be half the time with this new source.
-
I've noticed that after the garden segment on my Weatherscan, it will display the following message:
Become part of our new weather movement and connect with passionate fans who love weather as much as we do. Visit weloveweather.tv
-
In that case, it must mean that TWC is still supporting Weatherscan...
-
While I'm quite surprised that Weatherscan still has some signs of life, I bet it'll probably be another few years or so before the channel ultimately fades into history. The facts of that are obvious, Weatherscan still runs on 12 or 13-year-old computers plus there has been a significant carriage drop of the channel over the past 5 years; e.g. Verizon FiOS as well as Comcast's inter-mountain and west coast markets. Despite all that, I myself was lucky to even see Weatherscan in person, of course back when I used to live in Spokane and had Comcast. Now that that's long gone, I can always look back at the many DVD recordings I have of the channel as well as listen to the entire music playlist.
-
Another change: The soil moisture/palmer drought severity map on the Garden segment has been replaced by the USDA drought monitor.
Also, the reason for the Weather Group and weloveweather.tv referencing is due to weather.com being owned by IBM now. weloveweather is still owned by the television division, so they went with that.

I don't think this is true as far as cable networks go because on the domestic Istars the warnings are still passed through and are not narrated. Nothing happens when I switch over to SAP either so if the new regulation is true I smell lawsuits coming.
-
So does any part of TWC still have anything to do with NBCUniversal?
-
The whole television division is still owned by NBCUniversal, Bain Capital and Blackstone. They just renamed the whole company to Weather Group Television, LLC after the sale of TWC's digital division to IBM, and thus Weatherscan reflects those changes.
-
I noticed the narration is back and the Xfinity logo has been changed from red to all white. Also the TWC logo has returned.
-
I'm shocked. I wonder if the "warnings" (if that's even what they are) are still read out loud...
Are they Cantore's narrations or are they the old Amy Bargeron ones? I don't have weatherscan anymore, so I can't check for myself...
-
It seems Weatherscan was rebooted today and the logo was removed as were the narrations. The white Xfinity logo remains
-
guess that unit wasn't updated when they pushed out all of the updates a few months back.
one other thing I noticed as well, when the Detroit unit had to reboot because of the DST glitch, the boot screen still had the TWC logo... I'm a little surprised by that honestly
-
Does the Weatherscan Channel Logo have the TWC Logo still?

I can think of two different reasons off the top of my head that could possibly explain this. Least likely reason is it's TWC's way of showing that they made the software. Most likely reason is that they probably couldn't be bothered to remove it from somewhere that viewers of the channel very rarely ever see/are not supposed to see.

you're probably correct. i highly doubt they care about it at all -- it was just something interesting i noticed. besides, isn't the boot screen really only for the headend techs/star team to look at? (someone here may have to explain that to me; my knowledge of wxscan is quite limited)

Not sure when it happened but looks like the radar/satellite loop now has frozen precip when applicable.
-
I'm glad they made the change. I didn't think they'd add precip type to it.
For some reason the legend still shows only rain. Hopefully they fix that soon.
-
I would hazard a guess that the radar feed on the sat/rad on Weatherscan wasn't even on purpose. TWC probably discontinued or replaced the old radar feed with a newer version and it just so happens that's the feed Weatherscan uses. If it was an intentional update they would have updated the precip legend. Weatherscan doesn't really get updates anymore which is another reason I think it wasn't an official update.

As the IS and IS2 utilize the same set of radar and satellite overlays, I would not be surprised if a change is coming soon for the IS2 which will include a radar/satellite display during the LF's, specifically if there isn't any precipitation that would be shown during the local radar product. My 2 cents..

I didn't know they both ran off of the same feed. I always assumed there were two separate feeds - one for Weatherscan (for all the extra segments/products it has), and another for the domestic IS/IS2 units.
I agree with your theory on a sat/rad loop being added to the IS2 - that would be a great (re)addition to the LF.

A friend of mine reported this on his unit (don't know the ID # - it's out of the Xfinity Taylor headend): when the airport scroll runs on the black bar - for Detroit Metro Airport, "airport" is misspelled as "aiport."
Should this be reported to the STAR team? I mean, it's not a glaring error, to be honest.
-
apologies for the double post, but is anyone else having problems with NWS bulletins not showing up on Weatherscan? I'm under a Freeze Warning, and the Weather Bulletins slide hasn't shown up at all. This also happened when we had a Flood Watch a few days ago.
What's funny is that not even a few weeks ago, it was working fine - but yet other people were under tornado and severe t'storm warnings and nothing even happened.
I'm hoping this is just a bug, and not another update...
-
First time poster. I've also noticed the lack of weather bulletins, more so during the recent heat wave and not seeing the Heat Advisory that had been issued typically in the past. No generalized scroll warnings anymore as well it would appear. I would guess this wasn't just a bug.
-
Anyone else notice the change to the Severe Weather Mode function on Weatherscan? It seems to be running a full local forecast product now. Haven't seen that since the redesign in '05.
-
Apologies for the double post, but I just read that Xfinity is dropping Weatherscan from the rest of their systems towards the end of October. Can anybody verify this?

Might be in place of Local Now i haven't heard of a drop.

There are two cases of what could potentially be a retirement of Weatherscan on Xfinity on October 10, 2017. I am not sure if these are limited to these two users' headends or if this is a universal retirement. Still something to watch, this could be bad

Thanks for those links. I read this on DSLReports originally, where a user posted a channel update and mentioned it'd be gone either on the 10th or the 30th. I wasn't thrilled about this when I read it, but looking at it from TWC's point of view - except for a few rare cases, ratings for it are in the toilet (why the hell do they measure ratings for it anyway? that's just moronic). Barely any revenue, lack of popularity, smartphones (big factor in this), people getting rid of cable, and of course, it being dropped practically everywhere - I wouldn't be shocked if it was killed off after this.
Looking at it from a nostalgic point of view - I'd be completely upset if Weatherscan was shut down. At least we have Brian's emulator to help fill the void. ;)

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Xfinity is indeed getting rid of it. Truth be told, I haven't watched TWC (or even Weatherscan) that much until recently with the recent storms. However, Intelliguy (Mike) had said he called his Comcast representative, and they said that it would not be dropped in the Philadelphia area. I'm not sure if it'll be removed where I'm at, but from what is known right now, Detroit and Atlanta are definitely no longer going to have Weatherscan. The representative he spoke to confirmed this.
-
This doesn't surprise me at all. Comcast already dropped the axe on Weatherscan on their west coast headends a few years back, and I had a feeling they would eventually do the same in more markets.
-
So when my cable company re-did their major contracts in 2010, they signed a then-10-year deal for rights to Weatherscan. Then, in 2015, they signed a new agreement to carry The Weather Channel and at that same time, opted into the NCTC agreement for Weatherscan, where they previously dealt directly with TWC. It would appear that that agreement is up on February 28, 2019. I'd be interested to see if TWC is simply letting the units continue on until the last carriage agreement expires and not including it in new ones or if they will begin to actively retire them over the coming months.

I'm surprised they even have it as an option still. That threw me for a loop.
Seeing as how TWC couldn't care less about Weatherscan, I don't think they know what they're going to do with it. I'm guessing they'll leave it up to the cable co's. Would make much more sense than retiring every Weatherscan unit at once like they did with the domestic IS1's, IMO.
-
Guess we can keep piling it on - apparently ALL remaining Xfinity headends that still carry Weatherscan are dropping it on Nov. 6th. Saw some, *ahem*, rather colorful posts on Xfinity's Facebook page and forum about it.
Still going with my theory that it'll die off when other cable companies drop it, or when the IS units begin to croak. I highly doubt TWC's going to put in the effort to shut it down themselves.

If Local Now didn't exist, I would agree. Is there any possibility that service could replace Weatherscan? It's obviously not exactly the same, but I wouldn't be too surprised if that happened.

I don't think it would work. Local Now, despite the name, isn't as localized as most people would like it. Weatherscan on the other hand can be localized heavily.
-
I saw it coming... to be honest, I don't really care anymore... I'll be switching to Verizon soon, and plus isn't that what the emulator's for? ;)

Well, I was right in my prediction that Weatherscan wouldn't last for much longer here. Weatherscan is being dropped from the lineup on December 5th.. the end is nigh!

It's gone

It's inevitable

Weatherscan has disappeared from Xfinity in the Pittsburgh metro area.

Even though I’m in college now 100 miles away, I still like to keep up with what’s going on with the cable system at home and I saw their meeting agenda a couple of days ago included a “Weather Channel Renewal” section and assumed that any renewal of their TWC affiliation agreement would include the forced removal of Weatherscan. This is apparently not the case. The agreement (negotiated through the NCTC) actually extends carriage of both TWC and Weatherscan from the original cut-off date of February 28, 2019 to February 28, 2022. Also, by entering this agreement a year early, allows them to save money on buying the channels wholesale. Seems like my theory is correct in that TWC isn’t forcing anything and they’re just letting cable companies decide when to get rid of it based on viewership numbers, bandwidth concerns, overhead costs, etc. This may change in the future, but it does appear Weatherscan will live in Frankfort for a few more years.

I think in your case in Frankfort, Weatherscan has more decent views due to it being in a lower channel number (19) and being in a lower tier. Most Comcast markets required one of the highest digital packages and had the channel in the 100s or higher; that alone (but also other reasons) didn't draw a lot of viewership.

And that, I think, is the big takeaway. But with new owners, who knows what will happen now.

Hey, maybe Weatherscan will get an upgrade! :P (sorry, I had to)
More than likely, they'll just leave it as is. Only change I could see is more of Cantore's narrations being added, if that hasn't already happened yet.

Back when my market was served by Comcast, Weatherscan was (until Time Warner Cable's takeover in September 2006) also on a lower tier here in Dallas/Fort Worth. Albeit on channel 99, but anyone with standard analog cable could still receive it.

Came across a transcript of a recent Comcast shareholders meeting where the CEO was asked if Weatherscan would return to Xfinity headends:

The juicy quote from the meeting (for those who don't want to go thru six pages):
Arthur Block
Next question. In view of the recent unusual weather and the fact that the weather channel fails to provide radar and other important local information, why can’t Comcast restore weather scan to its viewers? Seeing a crawler with local information is not adequate.
Brian Roberts
Thank you for your comment. I will pass it on to our cable division. But I don’t believe we have plans to return on weather scan at this time but thanks for the input.
Hey, at least it got a mention...although we all knew what answer to expect. :P

The Weatherscan unit here on Blue Ridge got a new logo for the first time since early 2015 as of the 20th. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the placement of it though

:O There are three different Blue Ridge logos? O_O
What were the other Blue Ridge logos (before 2015, please)?

Looks like we might be able to add another unit or two to the list of those still in operation. Suddenlink’s lineup in Prestonsburg, KY (Floyd County, well out east), as well as in Logan, WV (just across the border) both have Weatherscan still listed as available. No word on whether or not that’s the same unit, but would be nice to see another in operation here in the state! Since I’m based in eastern Kentucky now, I might try to see if I can’t try to snap a photo or two.

We can add Georgetown, SC to that list as well. I don’t think anyone else has discovered this one yet. This is the only picture of it I can find
-
Do you think you know what provider it is?
-
I think it is a municipal provider.

I think it is a municipal provider.
Does it still have it?

Are there any videos of "Weatherscan" displaying 2 "WEATHER BULLETIN" screens? I keep thinking there was one somewhere awhile back, but I wouldn't have any idea how to find it again, if it still exists.

It seems Blue Ridge is under the same agreement, TWC is up for renegotiation next month for us as well. I'll be interested to see if Weatherscan actually lives on any longer.

As much as I hate to say this, I would honestly be surprised if it does.
