New Registration Process
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:00:49 PM »
As you all surely know we have begun to have problems with human spammers registering and posting garbage on the forum. The good news is that both were from foreign countries. The bad news, however, is that as a result I have had to change the registration procedure. From now on new members will be sent an e-mail which contains a link they must click in order to activate their account. The theory is that this will stop bots in their tracks, and will hopefully cause human spammers to go elsewhere, not wanting to deal with a complicated process.

This thread will remain unlocked, so questions and comments are welcome.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I thought you always had to click on an activation link when you joined?

I'm guessing not, since the option wasn't checked until I checked it last night. AFAIK, activation was instant. You had access the second you registered.

Didn't we agree to keep our noses out of each other's business when it comes to how we run our forums? I KNOW I did.  :hmm:

I guess I assumed our agreement superseded anything I may post here on the forum. Guess not?

Correct...I just checked my registration e-mail. (dated 6/26...1yr anniversary is coming up!)

This is a good idea; I remember being surprised that I didn't have to activate when I first registered.

Wait... why was my *polite* post deleted... and can I have an answer to the question that was asked within?

Your *polite* post ( and it was polite, I don't dispute that) was removed because the issue is not worth pursuing further. If you wish to pursue it further we can do so in private.

I would appreciate a little respect, which means not questioning my motives. Thank you.

I've changed the registration process again. Instead of having to activate your account yourself, I have to activate it. Accounts will be activated immediately, unless a person registers at a time that makes that impossible (like really late at night).

I have gone back to allowing immediate approval for new members without the need for any action from an admin. I have not seen any of the spammers attempt to register since I changed the registration policy, so hopefully they've gotten the idea they aren't welcome and moved on.
