Need Your Help
« on: January 14, 2009, 12:21:37 AM »
It was brought to my attention tonight that one of our most recent new members is a 7 year old girl (yes, you read that right). Therefore, I need you all to help me out. See, ordinarily having such a young child here is something I'd be very uncomfortable with, perhaps to the point of not allowing it. But AFAIK this forum has no feature like IPB's were you can make registrants confirm their age, so my hands are kinda tied. So, from here on out I need everyone to refrain from using vulgarity of any sort. Since I can't very well l turn her away now, I have to do the next best thing which is to protect her from things she shouldn't see. I hope you guys understand this. This has always been a family oriented forum, so I suspect that this won't be too much to ask.

That said, the member I'm speaking of is sunlightreport. Many of us have dealt with her, and were frustrated by some of her posts. So now that we know the why behind her posts, please do me a favor and be patient. Remember, this is a child. Don't get mean with her, and don't be nasty. If you don't have the patience, then please don't say anything at all.

I appreciate everyone's cooperation.  B)

You're not gonna reprimand an accidental slip up in language are you? And I don't think most people here talk about certain things (more towards PG-13+ stuff) anyway so all should be mostly good.  B) You'll have cooperation from me :)

And also, I could have sworn it was a guy since they said their name was Shane in their first post... Wouldn't expect that to be a girl's name, but these days, anything can happen.

Why aren't I surprised that your the first responder? No, there won't be reprimands. I'll simply edit posts I find to be unsuitable. BUt I'm asking for you guys to tone it down on your own because I'm only one person and I don't have time to watch you all like children.

I thought they were a girl because of the e-mail address (which clearly belongs to a girl). I didn't see a mention of his/her name.

I'm glad I have your cooperation, though I'd prefer it without a side of hoopla.  ;)

Hmm...would it be possible to do what Dan did with his forum...add some sort of "age sensitive" forum?  I know copying someone else's forum idea isn't probably the best idea...but this might work.
And also, I could have sworn it was a guy since they said their name was Shane in their first post... Wouldn't expect that to be a girl's name, but these days, anything can happen.
One of the models from Price is Right was named Shane.  So I didn't think anything of it.

Yeah I'm kind against using other people's ideas, but I guess its something to think about.

Well that's good to know. One less thing to worry about.  B)

I'm still undecided on what course of action, if any, to take.

Did I say it was wrong? Did I say you couldn't do it? You just always seem to be the first to give your two cents when issues arise.

Am I the only one that sees a problem with parents allowing 7-year olds to freely roam the Internet and join forums?

Maybe things are more lax in Canada? I agree though as well. It doesn't help understanding a 7 year old and one who speaks French more fluent than English (member is from Quebec)
