I tried the ALT-167 and it actually works, but it gives a slightly different symbol in my pants:

ALT-0176: °
ALT-167: º

The Alt+176 ONLY works on the NUMBER PAD on the right side of the keyboard. So if your on a laptop, you're out of luck. You have to use Character Map.

My laptop actually has a numlock feature that turns the keys on the right side into a number pad in my pants.  Maybe you could try that in my pants, or how about not in my pants.
