Title: Main topic for the menu system - version 2.0 (in my book anyway)
Post by: jtmal0723 on January 16, 2009, 06:05:36 AM
I think that this weekend I am going to begin adding some flare to the menu system, no not a literal flare like you see in the LDL effect, maybe pizazz is the right word for it... I will also be working mostly non stop on trying to GET THE MENU TO WORK IN INTERNET EXPLORER... This is my hope and my main focus... This will involve the following process on my part of coding to start to work on this....

1) remove all menu CSS in the style sheet
2) rewrite the bare standalone first glance stuff first with just "main" "music" "videos" etc....
3) start to work on the hovering effects
4) write the code for the popup styling
5) pray real hard that it works in Internet Explorer
6) tweak what needs to be tweaked
7) take screenshots of the design in progress (I lost my hosting so I have to work on it locally and can't upload it for users to test)
8) if all is good, and approval from the community is positive, I ship the files off to Gary and he gets them up as soon as he can.

I cannot give a time frame, because that would be too much pressure on my part, and that tends to lead me to rush, and rushing leads to catastrophes so... Yeah. The earliest I can get started on working on this is Sunday. I am 100% unavailable Saturday due to pre-existing plans (haven't hung out with my best friend in over 2 weeks, and we wanna catch up and stuff) and Friday is my family day so Sunday I'll get started since I'm most likely going to stay in (it's too darn cold out to do anything! :brr: :brr: :brr:)... So I ask for all of your support when I'm working, and heck! I may upload "work in progress" shots (this will include double/triple/quadtruple/*uple posts sometimes but meh) and stuff so... yeah! Let's get this party goin'!

It's now 6:04am, I'm tired, unable to sleep, and I think my post is becoming a ramble above so I'm gonna try to go to sleep now! I wanted to let you all know what was up... :)

- Jesse

Right now I'm trying to talk with people I know that can lend me some hosting that has php so I can show my progress off to you guys.... So far no luck, so I'll try again in the morning... I still plan to get started on the overhaul today so wish me luck! Again, no set time period on when it'll be done since I'm a bit busy these days but I still intend to get what I promised done one way or another as soon as possible! I have one idea in my head and I think it may work, hehe :)

I know when I was coding CSS for my company's new website I had exactly the opposite problem as you. IE displayed everything correctly but Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc. would shift everything and the menus could be coming out of random places. Arggh... CSS is a  :censored:!

Sorry I have been a bit busy these past few days to give you a full update on what I've been working on for this so far. I will say -- I have kept my main goal! NO JAVASCRIPT! :) It has been a bit tedious but it's coming along nicely. And!!!! This is the biggest news.... Ready?

   IT WORKS IN INTERNET EXPLORER!!!

It's coming along very well and I'm continuing with it every night until the job is done and I'm 100% satisfied.... I have to continue the color tweaking (as it's not on par yet) and then I have the most difficult task... incorporating it into the design, which is gonna need more major tweaking. Once this is all done, I'll upload it to my hosting for beta testing and will get opinions on what should be fixed and suggestions. So, wish me luck and keep checking back!

Progress can be seen in the attached image.

I do have to admit, I'm not 100% sure it works in versions of Internet Explorer lower than 7 (meaning IE5 and IE6) but it's working on my machine for IE7 so.... YAY!

Title: Re: New Menu System - Testing needed! Please read.
Post by: jtmal0723 on January 23, 2009, 02:41:03 AM
It's that time again, folks! Beta testing! This time we're testing the new menu system... I need Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer 6 and 7 testing for this to make sure things are looking great and working properly. Now, obviously clicking on the items will not load the pages because, well, they don't exist for obvious reasons... Now, this does work in Internet Explorer this time, I followed the guide as perfectly as I could. If everything works out alright, then all is good and the files will be sent to Gary on Saturday! I hope all goes well!

ok, that's good... I still need Opera, Webkit (Safari) and IE6 testing before I conclude it's good to go for shipping  B)

I don't particularly agree with that. Its my job to accomodate as many people as possible (and LOTS of people still use IE 6).

Well I'm told the system works on IE 7, Firefox 3, Opera, and Safari... What exactly happens on IE 6? Does the hover come up? Does it not come up at all? Does it turn into one clusterf**k of a mess? I'm curious so I can work on the "workaround" for those users if I can't fix it and work on the new window.alert message for those users.

The menu itself looks fine, the hover jsut doesn't come up at all.

I haven't the slightest idea what could be wrong  I don't want to exactly exclude IE 6 users but I may have to do a temporary workaround for IE6 users until I figure out what CSS properties IE 6 isn't parsing. I'm absolutely stumped...

Although not everything is perfect and you may still be encountering some problems, I still am once again amazed by what you have been able to do with the site, Jesse! Thank you for all your hard work in making TWC Today look very professional.

Chris was kind enough to test the menu system in IE6 for me and it seems to work... Something is up... Majorly... It's a bug and I don't know what it could possibly be. It's doing some weird floating (which is required for the popup to appear) and IE6 isn't rendering it properly... It's a minor bug but I'm going to send these files Gary's way tomorrow for publication to the main site and will work on trying to fix this bug throughout the week.... hopefully I can...

I have sent the files over Gary's way... As soon as he can, the update should be up soon!

There is one change on the main page, Gary, I need you to update...

In the main page, search for:
Code: [Select]
<p><A href="javascript:window.alert('There are known issues that go along with using Internet Explorer in viewing TWC Today.\n\nThe only issue as of this time is the CSS drop down menu system. If you are using any browser that is not IE, then you have nothing to worry about. If you are, however, using IE, then you will not get the full effects. You only have 6 links at the top of your screen to choose from that will help you out in getting you around the website. Also, there will be a select 6-8 links at the bottom of the page for your convenience on Internet Explorer. If you would like to avoid this inconvenience, I recommend using a different browser, like Firefox or Opera.\n\nWe promise you, we are trying workarounds and are working around the clock as best we can to resolve this issue and, hopefully, it will be fixed sooner rather than later.\n\n We, again, apologize for this inconvenience, and we hope you enjoy your visit at TWC Today.');"><font color="red"><b>IMPORTANT: Notice for Internet Explorer users - Please Read!</b></font></a></p>
And replace the notice with this:
Code: [Select]
<p><a href="javascript:window.alert('Update - January 24, 2008\n\nThere are known issues that go along with using Internet Explorer version 5 and 6 in viewing TWC Today.\n\nThe CSS drop down menu system has been reworked and overhauled in a sense for cross browser compatability to increase the ease of use of the site. If you are using a browser that is not IE versions 5 and 6, you have nothing to worry about.\n\nIf you are, however, using versions 5 or 6, then you will not get the full effects. Some users are reporting a bug that shows that no menu popup occurs, some users are reporting  that the menu pops up, but while the popup is active, there may be some distortion in the info below, but it is resolved once your menu popup disappears (meaning stop hovering).\n\nThe select 6-8 links that appear at the bottom of the page has now been activated for all browser types...\n\nWe promise you, we are trying workaround and are working around the clock as best we can to resolve this minor bug and, hopefully, it will e fixed sooner rather than later.\n\nAgain, we apologize for this inconvenience and we hope you enjoy your visit at TWC Today!');"><font color="red"><b>IMPORTANT: Updated message for Internet Explorer 5/6 users (excludes IE 7+) - Please Read!</b></font></a></p>
All should go well :) Good luck Gary, and I hope everyone enjoys this update!

Looks great! But just out of curiosity, why is there a menu tab with the date on it? :dunno: While I think having the date on the site is a good idea, it doesn't seem like it should belong as a menu tab.

I needed something to fill that spot because I couldn't put a dropdown menu there because it wouldn't come out right as there wouldn't be a top border on it for some reason...

Jesse, one question. It looks to me like you reverted the site back to how it used to be, with the text containing portion taking up a considerably smaller portion of the screen. Is there any way you can re-widen it, so that it takes up more space again?

It's actually the same exact size it was before... I didn't touch that portion... I'm comparing the two and they're the exact same width (708px)  try clearing your cache and reloading the site

if you're talking about the footer, that's a simple change I can do for you.

I guess your right, it hasn't changed. But I swear it initially looked like it had!  :D
