Like/Dislike Button?
« on: July 09, 2010, 11:12:15 AM »
I don't know if this is possible, because I am not that familiar with forums, but I thought I would throw this out there.

Say you agree with someone's post...so you post ANOTHER post saying "I agree "....well, instead of wasting forum space like that, add a like/dislike button below someone's post. Kindof like Facebook....If you agree, click LIKE, if you don't agree, click DISLIKE.

Thanks for looking into this!

I've seen this on other forums. I like this idea. :)

I've thought of this idea as well, and I like it.  There have been times when I try and find a "like" button, but then remember that I am not on Facebook :P (how pathetic is that?)

Sorry but I disagree... it shows favoritism IMO. Especially having a dislike button, which is also why I can't see this being added on Facebook either. Plus I can only see certain people's posts being liked anyway...  :whistling:

I'm not really into it either...it'll just be a matter of time before every forum/sharing website has a like/dislike button following YT's removal of the star-rating system. It'll also make the posts look more cluttered

WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too many possibilities to be abused. I'm sorry, but because of certain circumstances, I have to agree with Mike and Victor...

PS: something similar already exists iirc, called karma in SMF.

Yes. Karma is the rating of members, but what I think is that he wants a mod for liking/disliking posts.

I like the "like" part, but the "dislike" option to me is a public expression of the "report a post" feature. That's just me...
I've gone off on a journey to be a moderator at another forum, but this place will forever remain home for me~

Dislike . I have to agree with Mike M. Similar to a topic rating option, a like/dislike option would show favoritism. Personally, I read topics based on interest, not popularity. But maybe that's just me. :P

I'm not a fan of any karma or like/dislike buttons.  I feel that it's obvious enough from the feedback of your post on how others feel about your ideas.  There's already been enough trouble here with disagreements, so it's not worth it in my judgment to add such a feature that could spark up even more trouble.

I would rather see everyone provide good explanations into why you agree or disagree with someone in a non-confrontational style.  It's okay to disagree with someone provided that it's done in a civil manner.  This approach adds more substance to the topic, encourages useful feedback from others, and keeps everything moving in a friendly matter.  Besides, if you really need an opinion, use a poll as everyone's vote is anonymous unless someone tells us in a post.  Please don't overuse this feature if you decide to pursue this route.

And that settles that... :twothumbs:

I personally am against it as well. Whereas the "like" button would subtract from the short posts such as "Yes" or "I agree," a "dislike" button would lead to severe arguments, IMO. Best idea would be to not have this feature on the forums. ;)

What? Go to Facebook? He wants a "like/dislike" button feature on every post to essentially "rate" someone else's post, like on YouTube.

From the majority of feedback, I don't think this will be happening.

SMF's Karma system is not for rating posts, but the user. I really do not the use of it on any forum since it shows favoritism.

No that particular feature wont be turned on. I thought you meant have a like button that was linked with facebook. (there is a mod for that actually) but i don't want to add that either
