Wake Up With Al
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:51:20 AM »
Al Roker, as previously speculated, is joining TWC for a new show called Wake Up with Al, which will air for one hour only from 6-7 AM ET starting this summer at some point.

His new co-host is going to be Stephanie Abrams. He's going to be live from New York while Steph is live from TWC's studios. Since it's such a major schedule shift from Abrams & Bettes Weather Center, I can only imagine that A&B WC is going to end when this show starts, so the only places I guess we'll see Steph is on that show and during live shots. As much as I didn't like the changes that came to A&B when it took on the Weather Center name, I still hate to see Steph and Mike being broken up. They had some fun times together, but again, the big NBC agenda rules the day and puts Steph on for only an hour a day.

That then makes me wonder what will become of First Outlook. It's obviously going to lose its final hour, which was its biggest hour, so I'd honestly speculate that they might cut back to just having Jeff anchor the show while Jen's on maternity leave. Honestly, they should just put Nicole on that show and let Steph take over YWT as well. Putting Steph on the air for only an hour per day is just a waste. I know that's how A&B started, but still, with the modern NBC thinking of having everyone working 3-4 hour on-air shifts, wasting Steph of all people for just an hour seems like a really stupid idea.

I guess we'll see what happens going forward. I'd assume it'll be a topic of discussion on tonight's A&B WC.

This is shocking to me. TWC has done some drastic things before but this is just... Doesn't seem logical to me. Thanks NBC!

Seriously, what is going on with TWC??  Not to be rude, but why must Al Roker be involved with TWC? :dunno:

I feel extremely sorry for Stephanie too. Not only is she no longer working with Mike, she is only on for one hour now. :( Maybe she will become one of those "fill-in" OCMs?

After hearing this news, my days of watching TWC are OVER!!!!! I mean, Why the F separate Steph and Mike? They are the most awesome pair ever! I feel extremely sad for this. I feel sad that A&B is coming to an end, and that I won't be able to see Steph like I normally do anymore. This is just stupid. IMO, I hate Al, and most definelty I hate NBC. Thanks alot for splitting an awesome team.
Now...what am I gonna watch now after they split Steph and Mike? Oh I know...NOTHING.  :hammer:

Geesh people.  It's one hour.  And we don't know yet if TWC-A&BWC (oof) is done.  It might shrink to an hour or two (I still think three is extreme).

This would have been a great vehicle for Nicole.  Then put Heather back on YWT.

I really have to agree with you on that one. Nicole should have taken that place, NOT Steph.

Well then it was VERY stupid to cancel EE, with Stephanie most likely leaving WC. They should of kept EE, and just used the WC brand in place from 7-9pm.

Now Steph's co-host is going to be in NY while she's by her lonesome in Atlanta (or in the field).  It's Weekend View all over again, when she was an assignment reporter on camera maybe 30 minutes a week.  Interacting with locals just wasn't the same as bantering with the OCMs at the desk.  What a terrible way to use her.  To me, Stephanie Abrams is THE biggest personality at the Weather Channel, and while she has great chemistry with Mike, the truth is she plays well off of anybody.  Pair her with J.D. Salinger, and he'd come out of his shell and admit, yes, he's having a good time.  If the Al Roker show's the only gig she's got, what a waste it will be.

As for Nicole Mitchell, I don't hate her and wish some lousy show upon her, but she'd be a fantastic co-host for something like this.  Nicole is lovely, and change the name from "Wake Up with Al" to "Wake Up with Al & Nicole," and it'd actually feel like a promotion, an opportunity to increase her branding as a personality, not just another OCM (not that there's anything wrong with being "just" an OCM).  Even though they gave them another hour, I can't imagine it inspired much confidence in Abrams & Bettes when The Powers That Be pulled their name off their own show.  Now the network's biggest primetime star is a co-host on someone else's show airing before half the country is even out of bed.  And Stephanie doesn't even know what the format will be, what she'll be doing, which makes it pretty clear there's no particular reason for the show to exist other than to get some of that much-needed Al Roker pizazz to jazz up NBC Universal's ugly new stepchild.  Hopefully it's just a summer thing.

my thoughts on this. well, i think it just NBC Universal attempt to put their biggest star (one of their most well know personally) together with Al Roker, who everyone know is the weather guy for Network TV's #1 National Morning News/topic show, the Today Show.

if this does take off well this summer, then say goodbye to "Your Weather Today as an whole show and see Abrams and Roker do the whole 6-10 EST time slot, granted right now the time slot is fulled with YWT and the last hour of First Outlook. but i think when they change the line up this summer, i can see ether First Outlook to get screwed over and lose an hour or moved to 3AM ET-6AM ET (which is in my time zone 2AM to 5AM, since i live in Texas) to keep it's three hour live coverage in the early morning hours

anyway i would like to wish Abrams the best of luck with her new show. but if this does means she and Mike Bettis parts ways, then i'm in favor for Jim Cantore returning to an time slot where i can see him, because he's on YWT which is on when i'm in bed asleep.

According to the Today Show clip, Al's not leaving the Today Show...
