I explained elsewhere that there is an inherent delay in digital broadcasting as opposed to analogue. Analogue broadcasting is essentially "what you see is what you get" and is as instantaneous as the time necessary for the signal to travel from the transmitter to the receiver (or through a cable). Digital broadcasting, however, must be encoded before being transmitted, and the receiver must then decode it before it can be showed. This encoding and decoding takes time, hence the delay.
European digital television has many advantages over American television. However, American digital television does have one advantage: it decodes and displays a signal twice as quickly as in the European system.
