Mike Bettes has announced that the next Vortex2 will be 7 weeks long (starting May 1 of this year). He will also participate as well.
It's gonna be pretty exciting, yet it's gonna be a bit longer than last year's Vortex2 imo.
-
Vortex 2 will be named Vortex 3
-
Vortex 2 will be named Vortex 3
Umm, where are you getting that information? The original Vortex project lasted for two years (1994-1995), and the Vortex2 project will last for two years (2009-2010).

Correct.
-
They would have to get a federal grant approved and tons of donations from other people if they're even going to attempt a VORTEX3, and no plan has been made for one in the future yet. I just hope VORTEX2 has more luck this year as only having one successful tornado spotting isn't enough for the goals they laid out.
-
According to TORNADOHUNT (aka Mike Bettes)'s twitter, Mike will be announcing Vortex 2 plans tomorrow. Can't wait!
-
Yay!
Mike: 39 days until Vortex 2! I'll be with the crew again this year. There will be multiple ways to watch live on TV and online. It starts May 1!
-
Hooray for VORTEX2!!!! I was at SKYWARN re-certification this evening and the severe warnings coordinator mentioned it. He was excited about it, too. Pretty certain that it's still Vortex2 and Vortex3 will be in another 10-20 years (but hopefully sooner) ;)

Yes its still Vortex2

Hey folks, sorry I've been silent for so long. I've been keeping busy with work and my personal life. Nonetheless, I just wanted to pop on and keep you guys up to date on The Weather Channel's plans for Vortex2 this year.
Let's go over some of the changes and highlights...
- TWC will only be following the armada for the first 3 weeks, unless the last week is expected to heat up.
- There will be no live chat or streaming on weather.com, can't afford it this year.
- There will be very little, if any coverage in the outside of morning hours (weather permitting), coverage will be focused on the morning hours.
- The Green Machine will not have it's Blooomobile attached to it this year, as the satellite fees last year were too expensive.
- Because live and on the go uplink (Bloomobile) is not available this year, the actual live in the field coverage will be in SD and via cellular 3G broadband (roughly 30+ second delay) (There is no 3G coverage, see how this will cause problems?) The only HD feeds will be during the morning reports as they are not on the move and the standard HD uplink/satellite truck will be in use instead. It is impossible to operate a standard satellite truck while in motion.
- Instead of a crew of about 6 people this year, it is currently planned to have Mike, a camera operator and a satellite truck operator.
I'll post more information as it becomes available, but I just thought I should post this information now since I just got it.
-
Wow @ no live streaming this year. :O it was so fun last year, but oh well. Most people dont have time to watch it anyways.

These changes make this year's Vortex2 sound so boring compared to last year. :(
-
Well, they have to pay Al Roker's patchy (if that) appearances on TWC somehow!!!!!
-
It looks like this year's VORTEX 2 project is going to be more than a week longer than last year, running from 5/1-6/15. Last year the tornado hunt ran from 5/10-6/13.

Watch them get a few good storms and miss out on it because they don't have the equipment to cover it properly. Also why focus on the mornings? Yea its Mike Bettes and YWT but there is little svr weather in the morning. Boring
-
i figure i would mention that mike stated today on wuwa that he will be involved with vortex2 chasing this year. didnt mention anything further than that though.
-
Since it's April now, we should expect promos soon... now that Mike is starting to mention Vortex2 on air.
-
You can really tell they are using a cellular connection with their video. Sounds and looks like crap. No live streams either. Booo

AT&T? lol.

Haha. Its stupid to expect them to use nothing but cellular service in the middle of nowhere. Wish TWC had just used a satellite truck
-
Kyle Smith Has posted an update on Facebook
Vortex 2 update: Management finally realized that the mobile 3G streaming solution was not a good idea. (Remember when we called this back in April?) Nonetheless – the Bloomobile is BACK! Starting this morning LIVE streaming from the SUV while on the road! Watch all day long on http://www.weather.com/vortex (http://www.weather.com/vortex) and check for updates on Twitter!
-
Good, because the bloomobile's quality was bad enough. Cell phone streaming was horrible.
-
Looks like Vortex2 could get somethin' today!

Tornadoes are highly likely today in Oklahoma and Kansas.

There are a few nice supercells with tornado warnings along the OK/KS border right now. Hope the Vortex2 team is around them now.
-
Mike Seidel just caught a tornado in Braman, OK!
-
Looks like the team has got something now
-
Sat truck isnt getting a signal out sadly
-
Yeah, and they just got a tornado (I think!), sad that we wont get to see it live. :(
-
We're starting to see a very serious situation developing. Very intense damage to lots of buildings. Scenes of several semis and cars overturned, several homes and businesses without roofs on them.

Starting? Have you been watching TWC and the feed?
-
Did you read the second and third sentences of that post? Seems to me like that matters more.
-

Do you mean Mike Bettes? I don't think Seidel is a part of this...

No Seidel caught a small tornado earlier today on tape

Both Mike S and Mike B are in different locations.

Well it's nice to see that the Vortex 2 team finally encountered their first tornado of 2010. I hope they don't get into any danger though..
-
It's neat to see Dr. Greg Forbes out in the field w/ the V2 crew. I wonder why he wasn't able to do it last year?

Don't worry they will be safe :)
-
I am glad Dr. Greg Forbes is able to get out there with Vortex2! I bet he is loving it!
One of the mets at the station I work at headed out yesterday to storm chase. He went with Tom Skilling from WGN. They were being chased by one today. Amazing video they recieved. I believe they were with the tornado that was just south of the OK/KS border.
Simply amazing.
-
Yeah, Tom Skilling is kind of like a local "Jim Cantore". Haven't seen him much, but from what I have seen, he's pretty great at his job. For a time, my headend here in Lansing was picking up WGN. Not sure why it was dropped.

Mike and Forbes did a live chat today on weather.com

How was that chat? I didn't see it. I bet they had a lot to talk about after an unbelievable day.

Well they did it at noon. It didn't seem as active as I would have thought

Most people are either at school or at work at noon, so I wouldn't expect that many people in the chat.
-
omghai tornado in Dumas, TX! Mike and the V2 crew are at it! :D
-
I wish they would show the full live video in HD like it is being sent to TWC instead of putting the Weather Center pillars on the side (I'm talking about the HD feed, by the way...I'm not completely crazy!). It's just weird because sometimes they have the live feed without pillars and sometimes with (on the same video between cuts). Very weird.

I agree! It would look a lot better
-
I will say that at least they don't have the national HD information running to take up more of the screen. +1 TWC. hahaha
-
Vortex2 might have a good time in central Oklahoma and northern Texas later today as they're in SPC's moderate risk.
-
South & Central Oklahoma are in the Extreme zone on the TOR:CON index @ 9/10 = 90%
-
SPC upgraded central Oklahoma to a high risk, the fifth one issued for this year. The other four did result in deaths, so tonight is serious for the Oklahoma City region. There are already tornado reports beginning to pop up in this area, and it could be a long night ahead. Any word on what Vortex2 has found so far?
-
Update from Mike Bettes
Happy memorial Day! Vortex 2 will be trying for some intercepts today. There have be 0 tornadoes in the V2 domain in the last 6 days. That's a bad drought. TWC will wrap up it's live coverage of V2 June 2nd. The project continues through the 15th.
-
I'm very glad that they had a pretty awesome year this year unlike the dry spell during the summer last year. I wish them all the best for the remainder of the trip!
-
It was a decent year. I hope they got a lot of data they can keep busy with :)
-
It may take them several years to sort out all that data. Hopefully, we'll learn a lot from their work.
-
imo, this year was excellent yet thrilling for V2. They spotted a lot of supercell storms, and got some tornadoes. It's something I won't forget.
-
I wonder when Mike will be back in the studio. I assume he will take some time off

I heard he is coming back to the ATL today. Maybe sometime later this week? Maybe Monday?
-
Mike Tweeted
Time to head home after 33 days of tornado chasing. Saw 5 twisters and met some amazing people. A little R&R before returning to work Monday
So Ana you are right on the money!
-
I can't wait to see the A&B duo back in the studio together after a month and a half. Steph sounded super estatic when she posted on FB and Twitter on Friday! Both of them rock!!
