So what's the deal with the video wall? Is it discontinued, or are they working on a glitch or something with it?
-
We'll they are only using it for the news and graphics that are non-weather related. This is probably due to the fact that the video wall has become very dark and hard to see the graphics clearly for the amount of detail that they work to add to the graphics.
-
I like the current green wall (I believe that is their current back-up)

Yeah it was their backup but now Its their main one I guess. It sure is alot better visually to see.

As a few others and I said over in the General TWC Discussion thread (maybe all the posts talking about the video wall there will eventually be moved here), I don't think anything is wrong with the video wall. Maybe TWC has realized the chroma-key is much clearer or since they have a chroma-key wall in the first place, why not just use it. I really don't see a problem with this and hope the change is permanent.
-
Personally, I love the chroma-key wall because you are able to have the true resolution of the graphic appear on the screen to give the viewer exactly what you mean to present versus the wall that is projected, lit, faded and poorly translated for television. The only drawback with chroma-key is the potential for key "noise" around the subject i.e. around their IFB or between strands of hair. It's definitely something I can get over in exchange for the full HD resolution graphics!
-
I could honestly give two shits anymore.
-
i would say why is not seeing the forecasts on video wall instead of the chroma key a problem? at least you get your forecast either way and TWC can't please every viewer.
-
Am I the only one that has seen them using it to show the 33 miners on YWT? Everyone thinks it is broken, but they were using it this morning.

We are well aware that there is absolutely nothing with the video wall.

make that three :)
-
They were working on the video wall today for a bit.
When asked if it was a permanent change to use both the video wall and green screen...
Not sure, actually! Think it's all still in the works!
-
We now do our weather presentation on the green wall instead of the 40 foot rear projection LCD weather wall (catwalk). The graphics are crisper when they're chroma-keyed in behind us using the green screen.
From Mike Seidel
I think it is safe to say this is a permanent change. Now here is the million dollar question... Now that TWC is moving back to the green screen and relying less and less on that damn expensive expensive expensive studio, is there a greater chance of NBC moving the main studios to New York? I doubt it but it is some food for thought.
-
I thought the agreement was when NBC bought TWC, the deal included that TWC is to continue to operate from a seperate building?
-
i guess LCD Screens are bad for business xD

you know how NBC honors agreements :P

It's a projection screen with many projectors behind it.

So let me get this straight. They go HD and launch the video wall in May of 2008, and in late 2010, they figure out the picture isn't as crisp as the green screen? Fail.

Yeah, waste of money. They also don't seem to show much exposure to the studio anymore. For example, they rarely show wide shots of the studio anymore, neither do they use the monitor at the big desk, and have cut back to just two studio setups (in July 2008 there were at least five). It also seems more than half the time TWC is broadcasting from the control room or the cheap so-called "digital media center" () now rather than the new studio, which makes TWC look even more like they've wasted money on the new hi-tech studio.
-
Hopefully the studio is still getting a good deal of use, maybe just not one that we can see on-air. Otherewise, TWC really did waste a lot of money. I don't understand why they're using "expert desk" in the old studio a lot now.
I will admit the green screen is crisper but still think the video wall should be used for some segments. And commenting on what Mike (here at the forums) said, I have also noticed and am upset about the continued lack of wide shots of the studio and the reduced number of desk positions. To be honest, that was one of my favorite things about the studio...to see what "position" the desk was going to be for a specific show.

Yeah, that's a serious fail. You would think that they would have tested the video wall and compared it to the green screen before purchasing it and using it live.

They can't set the desk in as many different positions because of where they have the new green screen setup. The studio probably is in a mess because of having the new green screen by the wall with the 3 lcd's, so wideshots wouldn't look so good.
-
i think it wont be long before the put a desk back in the old studio and start using it again for broadcasts im going to be honest with you i liked the old weather channel better than i do now..it was better when Mark Mancuso Dave Schwartz Cheryl Lemke and all them were there :)

the wall with the 3 LCDs turned in to the wall with the 2 LCDs, thus it made sense to put the green screen over there. They still have plenty of positions to use, but they're trying to limit them due to the set, in general, slowly falling apart. the Waves/Tornado part of the set is still functional, as well as the small desk area (allbeit the maps are shut off again), as well as the video wall position still being used, so it's a tough call.

Good luck with that.

I would like to see some pics of the whole set as it is now. I think the green screen is now maybe in the studio that was going to be used for lighting rod. Which one are they using now?

the one that is Maria's picture, for Halloween, is the one that is in use now. The Lightning Rod studio turned in to the digital media center.
