There was an article on Yahoo that the Weather Channel will start showing movies. So we have the WC Today show in the morning, now movies, what's next Donnie and Marie or maybe Jay Leno joking about the weather?
-
Re: movie night on TWC - it's important to note (before the anti-NBCers come along) that "The idea predates NBC Universal's purchase of The Weather Channel, Darby said. None of the first four movies are distributed by NBC Universal."

i think that's probably a great idea, i mean they were heading in that direction anyway, but i like the idea. B)
-
I think it will be interesting to see the viewer's response to Friday night movie night. I am not really excited for the idea, but it is definitely something different. I am not really going to complain that much, because I do not watch TWC on Friday nights, so it really does not concern me.
What is a good idea, however, is Jen Carfagno hosting and giving commentary.
-
It's not a bad idea, but I don't have much faith in it lasting very long. :itsok:
-
I saw this coming a long time ago actually. Ratings on Friday nights are very poor (not a surprise).
-
Not diggin' the friday night movies, but its whatever. Idk if anyone has noticed lately, but has the weather channel changed the day planner and pm edition shows to master control?
-
Thought this was just a joke in the Onion (http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-weather-channel-adds-a-movie-night,34357/), but it's on the TWC online press room with The Weather Channel Adds Feature Films to Network Schedule (http://press.weather.com/press_detail.asp?id=265). Starting Fri, Oct 31, with The Perfect Storm and continuing weekly with March of the Penguins,Misery, and Deep Blue Sea. I don't like the continued erosion of weather coverage, but it might make a good diversion.

AFAIK, nothing is done by Master Control these days. It's probably an inexperienced person using OverDrive in one of the small control rooms

that surprised me
-
Great, so they are now trying to do fewer weather coverage. This is just like what happened to Cartoon Network since 2005.
-
According to my guide, back to back episodes of Surviving the Elements will air from 1-4 AM on Saturday the 31st.

Isn't the overnight Weather Center and early Weekend View (4:30-7) mastered?
-
I'm not sure why you need full movies on Friday nights with boring weather when you have truckloads of long-form programming that you could toss in there. They could show special marathons of certain reruns to create a theme and promote it. Regardless, if the movie nights somehow become successful, they need to show "Twister" and "Day After Tomorrow" soon so that Jen can have fun commenting on them. :P I'm surprised those two movies didn't make the first four!

Cartoon Network used to cover weather!? :P
For The Weather Channel, the risk lies in alienating its regular weather-obsessed viewers, who tune in for news of high-pressure systems rather than high drama.
LOL. You alienated your real viewers a LONG time ago! But hey, if the Travel Channel is showing movies instead of educating its viewers, might as well follow their lead.
-
Psh. Movie night. :censored:
Not liking the idea at all.
-
this Marks the fall of TWC <_<
-
You know how they could make this even worse? Have a show within the movie like TNT or TBS does.

No, it's this guy (or somebody else on Monday and Tuesday) using OverDrive in a small control room.

Then again, it's entirely possible that Ed has been reassigned between now and then, but you get the idea. :P

Cartoon Network used to cover weather!? :P
No, I ment that Cartoon Network used to show cartoons, not weather. Cartoon Network now shows live action movies that are not animated.
Lately, alot of cable channels like Cartoon Network and most recently TWC are trying to add content that doesn't match the orginal content. Here's an example:
Cartoon Network -> cartoons then (now live action movies and mature shows)
Nickeloedon/Disney Channel -> family shows then (now stupid brain rotting stuff)
MTV/VH1 -> music then (now reality shows and celberty tabloid junk)
CNN/HLN -> news then (now talk shows)
Discovery Channel/TLC -> documenties and education shows then (now reality shows)
TWC -> weather forecasting then (now movies? :wall: )

Not to mention TWC becoming more of a news network than a weather network.

I understand why they're doing a movie night on Friday nights. But, at the same time, I don't think it's a stellar idea. And, to be honest, I don't see it lasting very long. There aren't too many weather movies out there, to begin with.
But, we'll see.
-
Exactly. There's Groundhog Day, The Day After Tomorrow, Twister, (I want to say The Weather Man, but that's R-rated soo...yeah. :P), do the HAVE to choose March Of The Penguins and those other two? Geez.

:rofl2: I totally forgot about "Groundhog Day!" "March of the Penguins" might not actually be too bad, because they could talk about the extreme weather conditions in Antarctica. And, it's a tear-jerker... At least for me! As sad as it is, because it has no meteorological merit, "Twister" was one of the reasons I got interested in weather! I wanted to be a storm chaser...

How ridiculous could TWC could be? No offense, but this channel putting movies is RIDICULOUS. In fact, for one, TWC is a news channel, NOT A MOVIE CHANNEL. For those other news channels, CNBC, MSNBC, etc, they don't put any movies, but as for Darby's idea, this is very crazy IMO.
If this keeps up, someday or the other, TWC will go bankrupt.

You forgot the History Channel with all their futuristic shows about the end of the world and other future shows.
How about TLC with Jon & Kate +8 ?
Depending on what movies they show, I might like this. My other hobby is our home theater with a projector, 110" screen, surround sound and 8 leather recliners in the basement. Usually during severe weather warnings we go to the safest part of the house (the basement) and watch a movie. :D
I have to admit, the only time I ever watched "The Golf Channel" was when they were showing the movie Caddyshack.

Yea Jennifer ( a producer at TWC) said it would be temporary. Lets hope so.

Omg Caddyshack!!! I love that movie! haha

i wouldnt mind so much watching a movie, only as long as the L-bar popped up, or the LDL hangs around.. only thing is, i cant watch a movie, because im at work at that time!

Yeah, I watched it as well

Who's ready for "March of The Penguins"? :P
They havent said anything yet about this Friday's movie...Maybe they'll start the advertizing tomorrow or later on...

The movie by itself is really good according to critics, and it won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. I don't know how much the commentary on TWC will help it.

It's actually a great movie. I cried... But, then again, all animal movies make me cry. I'd actually be interested to hear what TWC has to say about the weather/conditions in the Antarctic.
I must confess, I did not watch the Perfect Storm.

I do feel for the Penguins. They have it rough. I thought the movie was a little bland but TWC cuts a bit of these films when they air it. May just make it more interesting!
Chat with Jen tomorrow night

"Misery" is the next movie that will be presenting this Friday.
I have never heard of it...

The only movie i would watch on TWC is The Day After Tomorrow and thats it.

It's a good movie, but it has nothing to do with the weather besides the fact that there's a blizzard going on at the beginning.

Deep Blue Sea is this Friday night and on 11/28 March of the Penguins will rerun.

Ugh that sucks. At least they could get another movie :/
-
On Thursday (or Friday I think...) on PM Edition, they asked for some suggestions for upcoming Movie Nights. I'm not really sure if they will continue to have movie nights after the rerun of March Of The Penguins since on the guide it currently says TBA.
-
Tribune changed Friday December 4th back to Weather Center now. However, I would definitely expect movies on Christmas night and New Years night.
-
No movie next Friday :)
