Something interesting that I found on the Local Forecast.
« on: July 31, 2017, 03:36:42 AM »
Well, this is my first post on the forum. I have been looking around this website, and I just wanted to show you all something interesting that I found on the local forecast in Commerce, Texas that I have never seen before. It is an interesting combination of both Intellistar 1 and 2. More details in the Imgur post I have included a link to below.

I have also uploaded a video recording of the weather forecast, but keep in mind it is a bit shaky, loud, and was recorded from a tube television, but you should be able to hear jazz playing through the speakers, and see exactly what I am talking about.

While the graphics seem to be from around '08 and '09, I am not sure, seems like a custom version. Also, didn't they retire all of the original IntelliStar units? This is quite puzzling to me, so this is one reason why I posted here. Is this an error, or intended? Has anybody else experienced this before?

Also, I checked the college website and they also seem to be fans of The WeatherStar XL...

I assume you haven't watched a lot of TWC or just starting out, but that's the DirecTV local forecast that was implemented in Fall 2008. It is generated by the DirecTV cable box itself. It's basically a custom directv app that can receive signals from TWC headquarters to display the local forecast full screen. This was in response to constant complaints of a lack of a local forecast from Satellite TV customers. Unfortunately only DirecTV was capable of doing so because Dish didn't have proper ITV technology to do the same so an app was created instead which the TV user would have to launch. There are countless of videos on YouTube with those forecast graphics. There is an HD version too with a different background.

Edit: In response to the College website weatherstar xl icons, that's just a custom web script displaying the forecast for that town that uses the "WeatherStar XL" icons. It's probably from the C.M.S (Content Management System) that the school uses. I have seen that on countless other websites and is probably an old script created back when internet weather was just taking off. Most likely 2004 or 2005. I can tell from the 16 bit color that was most likely created back when home computers had strict memory limitations unlike now. Probably Windows 98 and 2000 were still somewhat commonly found.

Oh, nice! I forgot all about that particular forecast script, and come to think of it, does seem quite familiar.
We've always used Dish network to get the Weather Channel, so I had no idea about the special graphics package. I am not sure if they are playing off of their CD set, but on every local forecast, they only played jazz, with no modern production music to be heard. It's just like the good old days.
Thanks for the response.

i too have DirecTV (as a former Dish customer), yeah, DirecTV does have this feature to produce it's own LOT8, but DirecTV needs to update it to reflect on the current graphics too.

anyway, i see we are in the same county, Hunt County, TX

i'm from Campbell, which for those who aren't from the Hunt County area, is south of Commerce, east of Greenville.
