Title: Official Gustav Storm Alert Prediction Thread
Post by: tpirfan28 on August 30, 2008, 09:45:51 AM
Now that Gustav is a major hurricane, post in this thread when TWC will enter full Storm Alert mode.  Winner gets a nickle.

I'll say 12PM Sunday, after the eye crosses Cuba.

I say 12PM tomorrow too. Seems reasonable. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it happened sooner.

I'd say whenever it reaches into the Gulf of Mexico, which will likely be early tomorrow.

I would think so.

I'm interested how TWC will handle Storm Alert this time around.

I'm already in Storm Alert...I've been blasting all three Storm Alert LF themes all day. :P

I think TWC is going to kick it into full Storm Alert on Sunday at 11 AM ET, when Weekend Now starts.

Also, when does everyone think the inset satellite/radar/track will appear? I think we're going to be seeing that very soon, maybe as early as 1 PM ET today.

I agree about the inset sat/rad/track. I'd be very surprised if its not up by 1PM.

I doubt it might become a category 4 or 5 by the time it reaches New Orleans.

It is likely to become a Category 4 actually. It's got plenty of time over the warm gulf waters to do so.

So Gustav is supposed to DIRECTLY strike New Orleans?

So Gustav is supposed to DIRECTLY strike New Orleans?
No.

New Orleans is in the cone of uncertaintly though
Title: Re: Official Gustav Storm Alert Prediction Thread
Post by: Mike M on August 30, 2008, 01:36:52 PM
Yeah it's too early to predict where on the Gulf Coast it will make landfall. It could be in southern Texas or the Florida panhandle.
Title: Re: Official Gustav Storm Alert Prediction Thread
Post by: lfmusiclover on August 30, 2008, 01:41:42 PM
Actually New Orleans is dead center of the cone.

Also, Gustav is now Cat 4.
Title: Re: Official Gustav Storm Alert Prediction Thread
Post by: wxmediafan on August 30, 2008, 01:59:12 PM
Even if it doesn't directly hit NO, the city is still going to see effects from the storm.

Kevin mentioned "as early as tomorrow morning" when the Gulf coast could start seeing some of the first impacts from Gustav.  So, it'll be interesting to see when Storm Alert does happen
Title: Re: Official Gustav Storm Alert Prediction Thread
Post by: tpirfan28 on August 30, 2008, 02:33:25 PM
I do believe this is a complete and utter fail for TWC...there's a cat 4 hurricane buzzsawing right into the gulf, yet we find out what might happen if a cat THREE hit Savanna, GA.

You have GOT to be kidding me.

In fact New Orleans (if the NHC track remains) will be in the worst part of the storm. The front right section. Come on TWC! Where is that storm alert music? I think they will start when watches and warnings are issued for the U.S.

Yeah, that seems logical (but then again what has TWC done that was logical recently? :P). When the first Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watches are issued along the Gulf coast (meaning conditions will be deteriorating within the next 24-36 hours), I can definitely see Storm Alert following along.

You know, I was just looking at the NHC's forecast cones, and it seems that TWC's cones for both Gustav and Hanna are really different from what the NHC is forecasting. I wonder why they're seeing things so differently...

I don't think they are.  What makes you say that   There are now watches for the US coast, I think that's a sign that it's time to focus more and more on Gustav, especially where the current track is forecasted.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of coastal TX/LA/MS/AL. God bless you all!

Yeah, so my thought is that since they didn't use it for Dolly or Fay, they might have stopped using it altogether.

Dolly and Fay technically didn't fit the original Storm Alert criteria of Cat 3 or higher. Surely there must be a reason that these Storm Alert graphics exist for the current package.

I heard them mentioning that. Is it possible that Gustav is going through an eyewall replacement cycle? I've been watching the visible satellite image of the storm, and it still looks like a rather healthy circulation.

I don't get this at all; they're still not in Storm Alert. Three years ago, they would have been in Storm Alert by now with all four OCMs reporting from the field by now; yet they're still doing PME with one non-OCM reporter handling a given hour of the show. It's as if TWC is uncharacteristically downplaying the storm.

Even the podium is now back to yellow instead of red; does this mean Storm Alert isn't going to happen?

Good job on the banner, Billy! :cool3:

This is probably a stupid thought, but is TWC not in Storm Alert because it's the weekend? Maybe we'll see Storm Alert for YWT tomorrow because it's a major show.

And, possibly, since TWC has been totally revamped there is no Storm Alert anymore. :(

At least there is a hurricane banner on weather.com. It's rare to see special banners like that on the website.

Thanks.

And my guess as to why we haven't seen any Storm Alert yet is because they simply don't have the needed staff in during this long holiday weekend to pull it off. If we see any Storm Alert it will probably be a watered-down version tomorrow morning. I can't see them doing it any more tonight.

I disagree with that.

Anyway, they just pulled out the deployment map to show where all six of their OCMs/reporters are stationed. I wonder if we'll see Storm Alert for EE tonight. (which I won't be home for)

Why? They're supposed to be in Storm Alert.

They were in Storm Alert just for a weak Ernesto, yet they aren't in for a very strong Gustav? TWC never ceases to amaze me.

I've heard that Jim Cantore and Jeff Morrow were reporting on NBC Nightly News in another thread, so apparently that is why there are not many reporters stationed live for the Weather Channel; I guess if there is one thing I can unfortunately count on, it's the Weather Channel becoming worse and worse and going more mainstream.

If this is Storm Alert mode now (which it now is) and there's no music for it... THEN THIS SUCKS!

Talk about anti-climatic... nothing to emphasize the sense of urgency that we've got a hurricane on our hands here. Sure, I know. It's only music. But it sets the tone on what is to come.

I don't want to jump the gun, but maybe we'll see them step it up come the West Coast edition. The lead-in and lead-out music beds are okay though.

Are you talking about music for the Gustav openers or LF Storm Alert music?

Of course I am hoping for Storm Alert music during the LF, but I am slightly disappointed in the music for the openers. It is barely different from the regular opener music for the tropical update. I LOVED the hurricane/music graphics from 2006-2007. There was a definite Storm Alert theme. Just take a look at this YouTube video (courtesy of Tyler).

It's stationed behind the pillar to the right of the projector wall, and it's where the experts prepare for their segments. On some occasions, they'll drag it out in front of the projector wall for Dr. Forbes, Dr. Lyons, or Nicole Mitchell when they're going to use its built-in telestrator or simply when they want to open certain segments with an OCM and an expert in front of the projector wall.

You can see the podium behind the pillar on the HD feed when they show the shot of the left side of the anchor desk with Kelly and Dr. Forbes.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Gustav will not be retired. He was only Cat 2 at landfall, and for the most part damage was relatively minimal.

Looks like Storm Alert has finally ended. Anyone know when? I'd guess it happened at 4 AM ET when First Outlook started.

Yeah, that's right, but the Storm Alert music continued on the LF for another hour until the daytime playlist started. Why has control over the Storm Alert music on the LF gotten so sloppy this time around? Before it used to begin and end at the same time Storm Alert did. (with only minor errors here and there)
