Title: New schedule to come June 2nd?
Post by: Spring Rubber on May 27, 2008, 04:26:35 AM
Since I get the schedule a week in advance on DirecTV, I decided to check in on the schedule for June 2nd, and as it turns out, the schedule is looking a little different; apparently long-form is taking a step back and being relegated to FFN/ICHT at 2 PM ET and 3 AM ET. Apparently Abrams & Bettes will become a two hour show from 7-9, EE will run in its usual slot, and Rich & Sharon will "do that" an hour earlier at 11 PM ET. EEWC will still run for two hours and be rebroadcast at 1 AM ET to make way for the aforementioned FFN/ICHT block at 3 AM ET. Apparently nothing will change for the weekends.

TV Guide also confirms this new lineup and shows the same lineup for the week afterward. Why they wouldn't air HD long-form when they're trying to promote TWC|HD, however, is beyond me and also casts a slight shadow of a doubt as to whether or not FFN/ICHT would really air every day.

Wow, no primetime long-form programming during the week? That's a plus. So I guess Storm Stories will be discontinued?

Unless new episodes of FFN and ICHT were produced, that schedule has to be wrong, IMO. Though, I'm loving how EEWC will air an hour earlier (giving love to west coast viewers), and A&B is being extended.

If this schedule holds true, last night was the final night of weekday long-form programming. They're preempting tonight.

This is bad how........? We've always complained about live weather being cut away for recorded programs, and now that they've (TWC) finally woken up and listened to us, were complaining that the long-form programs are disappearing! I don't get it!
Where does Steve say the preemption/new schedule is bad?

I know Steve didn't say it anywhere. As I read this thread in general, some of the comments are good (in favor of new schedule) and some are bad (not in favor). Sorry, for the nonspecific post....I just deleted it. :blushing:

I think we're all in favor of a new schedule with less long form!

Although once the new season of WWCH starts, those episodes will probably air on weekdays again.

Like I said, I miss understood it.

You're probably right though about WWCH. Anything good on TWC only lasts for a short time anyway! :sunglasses:

Yeah, I saw the new schedule on my TV Guide as well. I'm upset that they'll be playing ICHT and FFN more often now. I don't really care for those shows, It's bad enough that Forecast Earth is shown like 5 times a day with the same episode. It'll get old fast. They need to keep Storm Stories if anything...

Aren't they going to need more OCMs to pull off all these hours?

As far as the OCM schedule, I'd say it would be the same as it was from 2006-2007.

Here's how I'd think it will work.

Team 1: 10am-1pm
Team 2: 1pm-4pm
Team 3: 4pm-7pm

(All times Eastern.)

Moving Betty and Sam straight from Studio 1A to the HD studio back to back might be rough, though.

Good point. The same thing would happen if Day Planner and Weather Center were to become HD during different times.

Shouldn't Weather Center start at 1PM again? I find no need to have four hours of Day Planner anymore now that the 2PM long-form block is discontinued.

They should bring back Afternoon Outlook! (I'm saying this half kidding, half seriously)

Edit: or at the very least, they should revert to the 06-07 schedule with PME being 3 hours...

Now this is REALLY interesting. I just saw a commercial on TWC here at 10:37 AM ET. It showed ICHT at 2 PM ET then FFN at 3 PM ET. Has the afternoon long-form blok been extended to two hours or was the commercial just wrong? <_<

The guide on the cable box we have downstairs claims "WeatherCenter" is on TWC 24 hours a day. Apparently it has not been updated in about eight years. And if that's not bad enough, it still shows the old TWC logo.

I just saw this commercial. It looks new, so I'm guessing we won't see Weather Center for 3 hours after all. :(

EDIT: Wait, I just thought of something. It could be possible that the long form blocks are only 30 minutes long, meaning at 2 ET you would see ICHT, and at 2:30 ET you would see Weather Center, and the same thing for the next hour, only with FFN. We'll see how it all plays out in the next couple of hours...

As crazy as that seems, that could be the case. I remember  in early 2007 when Epic Conditions premiered, they'd show Epic Conditions at 2:00 PM ET or 3:00 PM ET then have a half hour of Weather Center at :30.

No, they'd rise. Apparently the average viewer doesn't like "hard weather" like what Weather Center provides. They like live reports like what Evening Edition provides. Thus why WC is shortening.

I think everyone here owes it to themselves to ***** up a storm by using the assistance request form there. TWC needs to at least know that their changes aren't universally popular, especially considering that TWC is now essentially off the air during two big severe weather hours of the day.

Dear The Weather Channel,

The addition of the 3 PM ET block of long-form programming on weekdays is a terrible decision. Having two straight hours with no live weather on The Weather Channel is just an absolutely horrible mistake.

People want to see the weather LIVE, not what would happen if a tornado struck some city or hear about some kid getting struck by lightning in his favorite pair of shorts.

Please remove at least one of the two afternoon hours of long-form programming.

3 PM to 4 PM: Full Force Nature (two thirty-minute episodes)
4 PM to 5 PM: Weather Center (only one hour)

Yeah, I liked it when they did that. They showed a brief one minute national update, followed by a 1:30 LF. I believe they stopped doing this in June 2003, and instead displayed only a one minute LF.

Suggestion: Place "weather update" segments at the top and bottom of each hour of long form programming, like they did a few years ago after Atmospheres or Storm Stories (I think).

Let's use the L-Bar!  :twothumbs: It could show both national and local information.

Yeah, they did updates at the top and bottum of the hour on Atmospheres.
They also did it for StormWeek. I'm not 100% sure if they did it for Storm Stories though. I know for sure they did not do OCM updates after the XL's one minute flavors were modified in June 2003, but I'm not sure if they did the updates before that, though.

You're right.  I forgot about Storm Week.  Yea, I don't think they did it for Storm Stories.  They just showed the Local On the 8's..and that's it... unless there was severe weather (IIRC).

There might have been more complaints. Are they covering severe weather to pre-empt ICHT or are they putting in those two hours of WC?

They might just be pre-empting the long-form today. We'll see how it goes in the days to come, though.

Just got a reply from Chris. I think he misunderstood me. I told them about getting rid of the 3PM long-form, not just pre-empting it more often.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for contacting The Weather Channel.

I will forward your email message, expressing your frustrations with the lack
of severe weather coverage due to the airing of our long-form programming to
our producers and programming directors. When there are widespread outbreaks
of inclement or severe weather, our producers are given the option of
pre-empting any scheduled programming features or going live to Dr. Forbes in
our storm center. Hopefully, they will choose the later option more often in
the future!

We are always happy to hear from our viewers and hope you will continue to

Now Betty and Samantha are hosting the 2 PM CT hour of Weather Center. Looks like we're seeing a schedule similar to pre-September 2006, where the Weather Center OCMs would host the first 2 hours of Weather Center, then the AO OCMs would take over for the 3rd hour, and the WC OCMs would return for the 4th hour.
Title: Re: New schedule to come June 2nd?

Hmm, maybe they did remove the long-form programming. Usually if they were to pre-empt long-form, the PM Edition team wouldn't step in until 4PM ET.

Mike, that was definitely a canned message you got there; I got the exact same message verbatim during a severe weather outbreak in May. Here's what I got today...

Hello Steve,

Thank you for contacting The Weather Channel Interactive.

I will forward your email message, expressing your disappointment with the
recent increase in long-form programming features on the network, during the
afternoon block (2pm - 4pm EDT) to our producers and programming directors.
Needless to say, it greatly concerns us that these additions to our
programming line-up have negatively impacted your TWC viewing experience.

It should be Betty and Kristin again. Nick and Vivian should be back for the 3 PM CT hour of Weather Center. This schedule is much like what Rich and Jeanetta & Jeff and Vivian used to do with Weather Center and Afternoon Outlook, just replace AO with PME and shift the schedule forward an hour.

Whoa, that's a confusing schedule.  So Nick and Vivian are on Day Planner from 12 PM CT to 1 PM CT then on for Weather Center at 1 PM CT until 2 PM then take a one-hour break. From 2 PM CT to 3 PM, Betty Davis and now Kristin Dodd are on. Then from 3 PM CT to 4 PM, Nick and Vivian are on again. And FINALLY, at 4 PM, the PME crew is on. Is that right?

Correct. It's not really confusing at all. The schedule is done that way so that both the WC and PME crew work 3 hours, and so that the WC don't have to work all 3 hours of Weather Center + the final hour of Day Planner.

So I guess the long form has indeed been discontinued. If this is the case, then shouldn't Weather Center start at 1PM again? This way Nick and Vivian wouldn't have to host two shows, which is kind of odd IMO.

I think we need to send emails to TWC again. I don't see why we will just get one hour of Weather Center every weekday. To make matters worse, 3PM is when people get ready to leave work, and they want to know what the weather forecast is, not about the kid having his favorite shorts get ruined.

That's not going to work.  Having a couple dozen people send eMails is not going to do any good.  It would just be a waste of your time, unless "normal" (for lack of a better word) viewers are upset and decide to do the same.

We should all get proxies and pretend to be other people. :P

Although from talking to a few other folks, we're thinking (and hoping) that either Nick needs to rehearse more (since he's still shaky with the projector wall) or that the Weekend Outlook people need to rehearse. I guess we'll find out in the coming weeks. Of course, next week, we've got reruns of the special program Storm Session Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 2 PM ET, so maybe we'll see one hour of that followed by two hours of WC. Hopefully we'll get all three hours Monday and Wednesday, but again, you never know what to expect with TWC. :P

It looks like we're going to see some changes in the early morning hours next weekend.

The most significant change in the addition of a new show called ''Sunrise Weather'' at 4:30AM on Saturdays and Sundays. Does anyone have any info on this show? This is the first I've heard of it.

Also, it looks like half-hour episodes of When Weather Changed History will air at 4AM.

Interesting. I just checked it out in zap2it.com. I can't say I've heard of "Sunrise Weather" before. I wonder if it will be a live program? And I wonder how the half-hour blocks of WWCH will work. Half the episode on Saturday, the other half on Sunday?

Something about this just seems strange...

Edit: Just checked TV Guide, and it has WWCH running for an hour at 4 AM ET, then Weekend Outlook starting at 5 AM ET.

DirecTV's guide is also showing the half-hour WWCH in that timeslot with the 3:30 - 4 AM CT block currently blank; my guess is that Sunrise Weather will appear in that block on the guide before long. I wonder what the thinking behind this move is - yet another low-rated, poorly produced show?

Why have WWCH at 9PM and 12AM on weekdays? Those are the times when people plan their next day! 8PM and 11PM are better times IMO, since it's right after the national news and game show programming. I can't believe the "average viewers" can stand all of this.

Wow, this makes no sense at all? Is it possible that the schedule is wrong? I mean, we haven't seen "Sunrise Weather" the past few weekends even though it is on most schedules, and there have been a few other schedule errors in the past, too.

Nope, I'd say this is permanent. TWC's official schedule has WWCH at 9PM and 12AM. :( However, the schedule says the 3AM long-form block will be discontinued (both weekdays and weekends), as well as the 11PM and 1AM blocks on weekends. This means EE will air 8-9, 10-12, & 1-4 ET weekdays, and 10-12 & 1-4 ET on weekends (PME will still air at 8PM on weekends). I wonder if Steph and Mike will host the 8PM hour of weekday EE then?

As for weekends, we may end up seeing three shifts of OCM's working from 2PM-4AM now instead of two because of the discontinuation of overnight long-form programming. Looks like this means we'll see various OCM pairings on Weather Center just like how it was pre-2005.

There's also no mentioning of ICHT and FFN from 2-4 PM weekdays, so that long-form block can't be permanent.

They already started preparing this weekend by having three shifts, with the WWC shift being random, so yeah, that might be what happens.

Sunrise Weather is just a part of Weekend Outlook.

So....Sunrise Weather is essentially the first half-hour of Weekend Outlook?

Sunrise Weather thus far is basically the opener of the first half hour of Weekend Outlook, nothing more.
