i heard twc has quit doing storm alert for hurricanes even major ones hitting the us just continuing coverage with regular local on the 8s music like we seen for IDA 09 Alex,Bonnie 2010 and i heard this one on of the recent twc online chats but we will have to wait and see  anyone else heard that?
-
highly doubt it. it's their signature, kinda sorta. they love that sort of hype, so again highly doubt it.
the only reason why we haven't seen a storm alert lately is because TWC went back to their standards on what the qualifications are needed to go into storm alert, which is Category 3+ aka major hurricane.
also, storm alert was used just last year perhaps the year before.

Both occurred in September 2008
As for rumors dont post them unless you have a citation ;) that can cause flame wars on a lot of message boards
-
I know, this doesn't seem right to cancel Storm Alert but then again now that the station is owned by NBC, anything can happen.
-
one of the chat meteorologists told me that storm alert was canceled ...... we may see Storm Alert next weekend for that storm off africa some models bring it to the east coast as a powerful hurricane have to wait and see
-
From what TWC is doing now with its red L3rds and red LDLs (for DEPRESSIONS, darn it) I think SA, if it does still exist, will not "stand out" as much as it did before. Because what more can you essentially turn red? The whole screen?
So Storm Alert may not exist anymore because of this, but IDK.
-
the "Storm Alert" name is possibly gone, but you'll know TWC is in a "storm alert" when the studio turns red. That's the only true way to tell.
-
Not to mention red LDL, red l3rds... red graphics, etc. :P
-
the graphics are red for breaking news and continuing coverage i would say if storm alert does still exist they will change the name from continuing coverage to Storm Alert at the banner insted of breaking news/continuing coverage and the red studio lights like for Gustav/Ike so we will have to wait and see i messaged some of the people at twc and some said Storm Alert was going to happen and some said weather or not we are in storm alert the coverage will be the same wall to wall for land falls we might find out in a week or 2 like i said
-
Im still not buying that due to your typos  is this info posted on their press site

Lets send a Cat 5 to El Centro and find out :P

Maybe Martin can confirm if Storm Alert is indeed gone. The last time they went into Storm Alert was September 2008.

I haven't heard that its gone. I just think we haven't seen anything major enough to get the studio lights to red and the lf music going.

Remember that 2009 wasn't as active as predicted.

Well it doesn't have to be an active season really. You just have to get that one big storm to make landfall. I have a feeling given the right storm TWC will still go into a full storm alert
-
African storm may go out to sea if it does then we may have to wait another month to see if storm alert still exists :hmm:
-
i hope Storm Alert still exists
-
You say you hope it still exists and you heard from a chat somewhere that it wasnt being used anymore? Im lost
-
sorry to have confused you but that was one comment other twc ppl say it still exists so i dont know myself what to believe :hmm:
-

It's better for you to wait. Don't continue to google for answers or wait for some of us to confirm. When a hurricane promotes danger to the US then that'll answer your question.
-
Agreed
-
Nah they still probably will.
-
I would be thoroughly shocked if TWC didn't have a Storm Alert anymore. Frankly, these are supposed to be rare, or they completely lose their value to the public. Just wait for the next major hurricane to make landfall over the United States like Ana said, and we'll all find out together.

Well the trend in media today is to make everything a BREAKING ALERT or something. I imagine if it was easy to do they would hit the red lights for every minor thing. I heard it takes a bit of work to get everything ready though so its not an easy switch
-
looking like danielle may bend back west we may find out real soon
-
looking like danielle may bend back west we may find out real soon
It's still going to be a fish storm and hit Bermuda.

And even Bermuda is a stretch. :P

The main desk hasn't normally been red, has it? Because it is right now on WeekendNOW. So is the floor around it. Doesn't seem to be lit up at all and it looks like they're trying to hide it a bit.
-
hey kev does that mean they may be testing the lights for storm alert if earl comes and there hiding that they are going to do it? or are you saying they are hiding that they are not going to do storm alert?
-
they're probably replacing the lights and or checking to see if they're working properly.

That floor is always red.
-
They better not call it "Disaster in the Atlantic or "Disaster on the Coast" or something like that, even if they did change the name "Storm Alert".
-
i am pretty sure now that we will be finding out if its Storm Alert or not soon... its looking increasingly likely now that a major hurricane is headed for the outer banks of the Carolinas in a week or so (Earl)
-

I was just saying the camera angle seemed to fit with the graphics kinda covering it up. I don't watch WeekendNow much at all so I was just making an observation. I just came on here to see if anybody else was wondering about or saying TWC would be in Storm Alert anytime soon. If they do, I doubt it'll be until mid-week.
-
yea i would agree there probably Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning depending on how strong the storm is it still may go out to sea though we will probably have a definant answer answer by tomorrow eve or early monday if its going to hit or not
-
if any day will be a good day to roll out the storm alert tracks, that would be today. the music does have that "impending doom" feel to it, so if they wanted their audience to react accordingly (with Earl) they should play something a little more elevated.
my two cents!
-
storm alert was officially over sept 13 2008 at 6 pm (forever) that was the last time we will ever see storm alert on twc :(

If you honestly believe that this is true, would you please provide a link or something where you obtained this information? ;) What made you come to this conclusion? Just because TWC didn't do SA for Earl?
-
can this thread be locked? i'm gettin a little tired of pointless post that can't be proven to be true or otherwise.

It'll probably be deleted soon like the other SA topic was. Seems a little harsh to DELETE topics like these rather than just lock them...it's kind of confusing too. One minute the topic is there, the next it's gone.

the lady renee on twc chat told me and dr greg forbes told me that apparently the on air coverage does not go into storm alert any more here was our discussion: me well dr g major earl headed for the east coast this hour im watching for the storm alert music to come on....when are they switching into alert?
Dr. Greg Forbes: Apparently we don't go into Storm Alert mode anymore.
-

Then you got your answer, TWC doesn't go into storm Alert mode anymore. It was a category 2 storm anyways, there's no point for them to cover this storm more if it's not a major hurricane.
-
agreed (unfortunately) :hammer:

shut up
Dr. Greg Forbes: Apparently we don't go into Storm Alert mode anymore.
Do you really think he knows how you define storm alert? Red lights and different local forecast music or extra coverage?
-
well he has done storm alert for years he was on for frances charley jeanne ivan dennis katrina rita wilma gustav ike i think he would know what storm alert is lol
-
I think we've beaten this whole Storm Alert thing to death..

something similar to that (was to lazy to make current gfx :P) L3rd by Mike M
The only thing he sees is a teleprompter when he says stuff like "SA"
-
I think we've beaten this whole Storm Alert thing to death..
And you don't need to say that. Its already been said and if its been beaten to death, contributing to this topic with that post is not helping
Yep Zach you got my point exactly
-
i see it possible that they may go into full storm alert mode for Hermine because it could become a hurricane...i dont think they are going to wait for a cat 3 or greater because this is the first relatively strong tropical system to make a us landfall since ike in 08 (if it does still exist)

I wouldn't count on it, so don't get your hopes too high ;).
I am still not comprehending the fuss over Storm Alert  TWC's tropical weather coverage has been great without Storm Alert.
-
the fuss over storm alert is if they did take it away it has been a classic for 7 years for then to suddenly take it away?? i mean seriously

Your acting like TWC is the world yet it should be the least of priorities so what i said wasnt supposed to be funny

You just had a Cat4 threaten the east coast and they didn't do it. Hermine is a weak pathetic storm. Good luck getting TWC to even really cover it. And that storm has little to no chance of being a hurricane upon landfall lol :rofl2:

Several people here on this forum need to learn to expand their horizons.

I'm skeptical about that, I tend to monitor storms like Hermine since they could easily pull a "Humberto" on us. It looks stronger than a 50mph tropical storm as the NHC is saying.

Looking at the latest info I would have to agree. I was looking at some old info from 5am  Still little to no chance of a storm alert
-
I don't think I'll believe Storm Alert is gone until a storm like Katrina, Rita, or Ike threatens the United States and TWC still doesn't play the music and go into the mode. There was no reason to go into Storm Alert last year because no storm posed a major threat on anybody. Same so far for this year. If Earl kept its strong characteristics and was going straight to New York as a major hurricane, they would've done something special. Since it was weakening pretty rapidly and it was looking like it was going to brush New England, I didn't see a need for it either. As they said, nor'easters and blizzards bring more wind than Earl did.

its to early to tell but the GFDL shows Gaston coming back as a strong hurricane but then drives it west right into the southern ucitan peninsula and then keeps it west and kills it over land
