General Discussion / Re: 5.6m Oklahoma Earthquake
« on: November 06, 2011, 05:10:51 PM »
I'm probably posting in this thread too much, but is there any relation to damage done by an earthquake and its magnitude?  I was surprised to find out the magnitude was a 5.6, because I didn't notice any damage (or even shifting of objects in my dorm room).  Nothing fell off desks that I noticed, but with an earthquake this strong, you would think there would have been some noticeable "movement," right? :dunno:
While a 5.6 is a large(er) quake, it's strength is puny compared even to a 6.0. I believe for each number you go up the scale (eg. 5.0 to 6.0) the strength increases 1000x. It's on the internet somewhere. California routinely has quakes in the 5.0 ranger, very little damage.

The NMSZ (New Madrid Seismic Zone) is nearby this area. Could these possibly be foreshocks to the 'big one', a repeat of 1811-1812? If it is, the 'big one' could cause some serious damage to Downtown Memphis and even Southaven.

Usually, if the "big one" is going to happen, there are numerous small (and small being 2.1, 1.9, etc) quakes-as well as microquakes-leading up to it, NOT moderate quakes in the 4-6 magnitude level. These larger quakes (4.7 and 5.6) relieve tension on the fault, meaning it's less likely for the "big one" to occur right now.

Are you seeing locals yet in Bozeman?
We are indeed! Thank you!

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Bozeman, Montana Intellistar still M.I.A.
« on: October 18, 2011, 12:52:49 PM »
Hello STAR team. I would like to inform you that the Bozeman, Montana IntelliStar used by Optimum cable (I do not remember the ID, but I believe it began as 229**) is still missing in action. I have not seen a local forecast since late last week-Thursday or Friday, if I recall. Instead, I simply see the national LDL and standard definition satellite local forecast. Any thoughts on what is going on?  :dunno:

Had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Jim Cantore, Dr. Forbes, Stu Ostro and Nick Walker today!

Really? Wow! That must have been a really cool experience! What was it like?

Not all of the Intellistars have come back online. The Bozeman, MT unit, as well as several others throughout the region have not yet come back online. It's been roughly 24 hours since the local LDL and forecasts disappeared.

The blue accents and lighting really add a nice touch. It matches the HD studio main set desk much better.

We get the idea... ;)
Is it possible that it could be an update returning the squeezeback, or am I talking out of my a**?

It looks pretty nice, actually. I'm not completely sold on the wall color yet. Have to wait and see.

Everything Else TWC / Re: Blooper Thread

At the beginning of the 7 PM ET hour of Weather Center, there were at least three (maybe four) TWC logos on the bottom right. The satellite LDL logo, the IntelliStar-generated logo, and the transparent long-form logo. I thought I saw another logo disappear, but I'm not sure (I'll check my recording later).

Bet that looked quite messy.

I'm not sure what they are doing with these segment graphics, but they look horrible IMO.
Not a huge fan of them, either. I mean, I like that they're looking more uniform, but they look BAD.

Plane852, 80 or 70 mph speed limit is nothing. It's only 55 here in NJ :(
Same in New York, it's 55 on the 90 around Buffalo, which is ridiculous. Traffic does 65 at minimum, and 70 usually. Do it right, and you can be safe. Heck, Montana's speed limit didn't exist until 1999 i believe. Prior to that during the day it was "reasonable and prudent".

Honestly, schools need to be a bit more lenient to cellphones as it has impacted our society so much. Before school, during lunch, and after school are good times to use it. Even for those that have to use them in case of emergency is perfect. My high school (where I graduated from) were super duper strict with cellphones. It was borderline NO CELLPHONES ALLOWED. Since my school was an open campus, students cannot use their cellphones within 20 or so feet on campus. Which is like... a block from the school. idk. ANYWAYS, yeah, if you're caught with your cellphone, even if you're just outside the gym, they'll take it with no question and give you detention. Yeah, my high school was that strict, and I find that unfair. :( I'm not sure if this rule still exists, seeing that I graduated 3 or so years ago.

Cell phones don't belong in school. They should be off at all times. You are there to learn.

Agreed. Most common vehicle/method for cheating.

I wouldn't want to attend all of your schools... jheez...

Well Jesse, surely you had some form of disciplinary action at your school...

Jesse and I attended schools.  The rest of you... well, "prison" seems too inadequate a word.  Are you allowed to sneeze without getting written up for it?!

You only got JUG if you did something extremely stupid, disrespectful, or committed some form of academic dishonesty. Do any of those things, and they'd make it sting-like it should. If you didn't screw around, dealt with and debated with the teacher in a professional way (which is one of the core things they teach) and didn't cheat you were fine. It wasn't prison, it was academic darwinism.
