Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion

Is it that big of a deal that they're calling it the Fourth of July? I don't know anyone that refers to 7/4 as Independence Day... everyone I know calls it "the Fourth," "Fourth of July," or "America's Birthday."
Agreed.  Who cares what they call it, as long as we know what the holiday stands for

Justin Beiber is going to be the next Michael Jackson. It's ridiculous. Plus, his music (and any music from this current era) is TERRIBLE.
Have to disagree with the bold....

....But I definitely agree about Bieber.  Once that voice cracks..career over.  Bieber who?

Well, they just fired Keneely this week, so no one there seems safe!
I won't believe that one bit until I see an article from someone that actually got the info from TWC. He did used to work for WTVT in Tampa in 1982 up until TWC's launching.
Yeah, definately something that needs official confirmation.  If it does happen, it's sad; however, I won't be surprised one bit.

I do like this new guy, Steve MacLaughlin.  His eyebrows are kind of annoying, but he seems like a good meteorologist.

I know you all are going to LOVE, LOVE, LOOOOVE this story.  Justin Beiber is in my town   This kid is insane.  People were flooding the newsroom I work in with pictures of him spotted around town, and even cell phone video.  It is REDICULOUS!  He got kicked out of Wal Mart because him and his "posse" were riding bikes and throwing balls around.  PUNK!

Even wierder (is that a word? :P)..my brother's friend's sister (who is 20) is a huge fan of him, so she went down to the hotel he is staying at and tried spotting him.  She wasn't alone.  The station did a live report from the hotel, and there were like 30 pre-teen/teen girls standing out there screaming for this no-talent kid!  Unbelievable!!  Anyways, she got invited to go bowling with Justin's back-up singers and dancers..crazy (which it never ended up happening..haha).

They are shutting down streets because of this kid.  Absolutely rediculous  :itsok:

Thanks again, everybody.  Despite having to go to school, and having to work, I had a good birthday.  The real celebrating happens tomorrow :)

I love it! Looks MUCH easier to navigate than before.

Thanks for sharing, Martin  B)

TWC uses red lower-thirds for any developing story or coverage for any severe weather, so it's harder to determine when TWC goes into Storm Alert.
When the studio goes red, you'll know it's storm alert.
Very True.  That, and I am sure that they will beat the heck out of "We are in Storm Alert here at The Weather Channel for ...." :D

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Alex
« on: July 01, 2010, 12:14:29 AM »
Hurricane Alex has made landfall near Soto La Marina, Mexico around 10 PM EDT.  This town is about 110 miles south of Brownsville, TX.  The winds have peaked at 105 mph, and the pressure is 947 mb.  That pressure reading is really low for a Category 2 hurricane.  It could have been a scary situation if Alex had more time over water as it was really picking up intensity the last few hours.
A couple of the local meteorologists here were really surprised how low that pressure was.  They were saying that the pressure was more like a Category 4 hurricane!  Crazy.

As mentioned earlier, beautiful storm on the satellite.

It's amazing how something so devistating can be so beautiful at the same time.   I love seeing views of hurricanes from satellites.

Interesting that you pointed that out.  Very good observation!

If it truly is the same set, it's great that they recycle the old set, since it wasn't in use for THAT long.

Apparently, weather.com has been completely redesigned and will launch in the coming weeks. The post states that the last redesign was nearly 10 years ago. Wow, I had no idea it had been THAT long! Where I work, we generally recommend redesigning a site every few years.

I wonder what TWC considers a complete "redesign," then. They actually seem to have changed the look/layout of their website a few times in the past ten years. Just look at this screenshot from 2006 and compare it what the site looks like now. This is a big difference, but I guess it's not considered a re-design. (Which could mean that this will be a MAJOR facelift. :thrilled:)

weather.com in 2006

weather.com in 2010

I am sure it has more to do with navigation.  It is so hard to find what you want on the website.  As you can tell by both of the designs you posted, everything is cluttered, and has the same general layout.

Julie Martin is Brownsville-bound to track Hurricane Alex! Facebook confirms.

To be honest, I haven't seen her do a live report for a while now.  :hmm:
She has been doing several reports from Louisiana on the oil spill.  It's about time TWC sends her out to cover weather.

WeatherWitness-  They have been doing the weather.com segment in the newsroom for a while now.

I can't sleep. Gotta love it when the a/c doesn't work and it's a sizzling night. <_<
Try sleeping in a tent outside! haha I am back from camping as most of you have already seen. I went down to Cape Hatteras for a few days with some friends. Boy was it hot. One night I just had to sleep in my car with the AC on once in a while. Still it was a lot of fun :)
You really get around, don't you :P

Beautiful pics.  I used to live on the coast of North Carolina until I was 4, so I probably have been to the Outer Banks at one point or another (can't remember..haha)
