Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: September 10, 2010, 07:53:54 AM »
I would not be surprised if this new logo goes live for everything. Think FOX News rotating logo.
I would not mind that at all.  It looks nice to me.
Now if only we knew what happend to the other LDLs
I don't mind it either.   A local station has a rotating logo as well, advertising the website.  I think it is a good idea, because a lot of TWC's promos already promote TWC Mobile and weather.com.  (However, I think the weather.com logo is kind of a waste, but whatever :P )

And I just realized that The Pot Belly Stove will be coming back before we know it.
That day is coming very close.
Fall will officially start this year at 11:09 PM EDT on September 22, so look for the transition to occur either on the 22nd or 23rd depending on what Martin decides.  It's hard to believe how fast summer seems to go these days.
Fall is my favorite season.  The weather is great..not too nor too cold.  Don't have to wear a heavy coat, which is always a plus.

Starbucks brings out their Pumpkin Spice Latte (which I hear you can already get if you ask..) and I hear Dunkin' Donuts has Pumpking Spice coffee.  Anyone tried that?

Yesterday our NBC affiliate WXIA-TV debuted a new weather product called the "W.I.Z" (Weather Information Zone) where viewers can rate the weather and other stuff online or on their phones. They ran promos for weeks that were saying, "Soon, Your Days Will Be Numbered." Did any other NBC affiliates associated w/ Gannett get some kind of product like this?  :dunno:

WXIA-TV Debuts the WIZ (Weather Information Zone) 9.7.10

Reminds me of Tor:Con in a way.  I don't like it.  I'd prefer just giving weather information.  I don't care how the meteorologist would rate the weather on a particular day.  It seemslike they put more emphasis on the "Wizometer" number than the actual weather forecast.

Forecasting / Re: Ask The Weather Expert!
« on: September 07, 2010, 09:23:20 AM »
I cannot believe that I haven't come across this thread before!  Great idea.

Back to the computer class and meteorology.  Yes, for my meteorology degree I am required to take computer programming, which I am currently enrolled in.

I noticed earlier that Patrick had mentioned that many meteorology students decide not to follow through because of the math.  This was me circa 2009 :P.  My high school absolutely failed in preparing me for college.  I was so overwhelmed with my college algebra class that I just wanted to quite, because my advisor was throwing out Statisitcs and Trig and Calculus.  So, once I changed my major midway 1st semester last year, I quickly found out it was a horrible idea by the beginning of the next semester.  I got a job at a television station, and I got to experience the behind the scenes of making a forecast and presenting it on air, and I just got such a rush being able to see this happen, and I knew I couldn't give up my dream JUST because of math.  I told myself I'll get through it.  The Physics scared me as well.  Right now I am enrolled in Physics and Trig, and so far, so good.

My advice:  DON'T give up just because of math.  It is very overwhelming at first, but if youtruly want it, you can have it :D

Anyway.. Tornadoes *generally*, if my minds serves me right, move in a northeast direction.  My guess of this is moving along the front if one is present.  Is his a good conclusion, or is there more?

i see it possible that they may go into full storm alert mode for Hermine because it could become a hurricane...i dont think they are going to wait for a cat 3 or greater because this is the first relatively strong tropical system to make a us landfall since ike in 08 (if it does still exist)
I wouldn't count on it, so don't get your hopes too high ;).

I am still not comprehending the fuss over Storm Alert   TWC's tropical weather coverage has been great without Storm Alert.

I haven't seen Jim out there yet. :dunno: Come on, I always knew he was one of the first ones out there.  :P
I am sure Jim Cantore will be doing the evening reports.  He was reporting last night from the outer banks of North Carolina.

Everything Else TWC / Re: Blooper Thread
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:43:15 AM »
A few times last night on Weather Center, Bryan Norcross was having some issues advancing the maps, and made it VERY clear.  In mid-sentence he'd say "Alexandra, the map needs advanced," or "Having problems, Chris you might need to advance the system." (something like that).  I found it funny.  He seemed to be annoyed by it.

Al Roker?  I wouldn't think they would mention him as part of their "team" but who knows.

Also: anyone else seen the new WUWA/YWT combo promos?  Less emphasis on Steph being on Al, it seems.
Yes, I noticed this promo today.  I would have thought maybe they would put more emphasis on Stephanie being with Al than being with Mike.  Shoot, half the time it's WUWA-Wake Up With Abrams and have Bettes in the studio.  Their morning line-up makes no sense to me :P.  Lack of consistency.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Earl- Storm Train
« on: August 31, 2010, 12:39:08 AM »
It amazes me that something so beautiful can be so deadly.  This is a classic major hurricane; a beauty on RADAR.

Wow, Earl is quite a beauty. :thrilled: This storm has gone beserk though, as far as intensity. Already a major hurricane, TWC (or I guess I should say the NHC) has this storm with winds as high as 145 mph by Wednesday afternoon. :o Now can anyone identify what is causing this storm to brush the coast and not make a direct hit? Is it a ridge of high or low pressure? :dunno: Because, although it may lose some intensity, direct landfall would be catastropic for the East Coast.

There is a trough of low pressure with a cold front that is pushing eastward across the US that is going to stear Earl away from the US coastline.  However, if the front moves slower than expected, that could bring the storm closer to the coastline.  I believe this is what is keeping Earl from hitting the US.  Either way, looks like the weather is going to get dicey on the eastern seaboard within the next couple days.

Have fun slacking in college...your results won't be as englightening ;).  You might want to consider trying. :P

If I would have known how much (my) high school was NOT going to prepare me for college, I would not have put in as much effort as I did.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Poll: Favorite OCM?
« on: August 27, 2010, 12:50:34 AM »
I actually kind of had to think about this a little bit.  It's been a while since I have had a "favorite" OCM.  I voted Adam Berg.  He is the kind of meteorologist I aspire to be.  Very knowledgable on the subject, and has a great personality; he doesn't flaunt those traits.

My favorite female is either Heather Tesch or Kim Cunningham.

Lightning is one of the most beautiful phenomena I have ever seen.  I love watching it, but it is also very dangerous (duh? :P ).  Last Friday, a 12-year-old boy was struck by lightning in my area.  It's the classing "hear a boom and saw a big flash of light."  Several people witnessed the incident.  It happened 5 minutes AFTER school was let out.  Okay, if there is thunderstorms in the area, wouldn't you keep the students inside until it is safe to leave?

Anyway, he was flown to a burn unit and is still in critical condition.  He cannot communicate, but has opened his eyes.

Zach, sometimes too much sleep can make someone tired.  Happens to me all of the time.  I wish I could get 10 hours of sleep :P  I am lucky if I get 6.

Programming and Graphics / Re: Lightning Rod
« on: August 25, 2010, 07:44:02 AM »
OK, so is "Lightning Rod" the same thing or different as these "Weather or Not" segments that, according to weather.com, have a set time to appear on Weather Center (7:40, 8:40, & 9:40)? :dunno: Don't both segments have the same hosts?
Yes, it is called Lightning Rod: Weather or Not.

I am not a fan of this segment.  It's kind of an awkward segment between the two hosts in my opinion.  When I watched this segment, it seemed they were talking back and fourth amongst themselves and not talking to the viewer.  However, they did incorporate some viewer ideas in the show, which is great.  I am all for interactivity.  I am just not for this segment.

I can see why this is not an actual show :P

Seems like these whine-fest threads become a monthly thing now. Well here is my opinion. NBC is not responsible for all of the shifts in direction TWC has experienced, they merely sped it up. TWC has done nothing different than any other cable network has done.

You ask when did this happen? It happened the day people kept watching TWC when they starting airing long form and non weather programming. If they weren't getting decent viewers and ratings then TWC wouldn't be showing it now would they? TWC is a for profit company. Some of you seem to forget that. Its a business and a business is designed to make money. End of story.
Is this a broken record, or what.  For the umpteenth time, Martin is correct

I look at it this way.  I am an avid viewer on MTV.  I enjoy *some of the shows put on by that channel.  None of the shows I watch have nothing to do with music.  I enjoy the shows.  I never really watched the channel when they played music videos all of the time (big fan of TRL, however).  I've come to like watching MTV by flipping channels and seeing what is on.

This is what is happening with The Weather Channel, in my opinion.  Yeah, I am sure avid viewers from when weather was 24/7 still watch, but I think TWC's goal is to grab new viewers (which is probably all the network's goals).  If someone is flipping through the channels and see something on TWC that catches their eyes, they are going to stop and see what it is.  They may like what they see and keep coming back.
