General Discussion / Re: The Debt Ceiling Deadline

President Obama is "making a statement" at around 1PM Easter/Noon central today.  I normally do not follow this kind of stuff, but I should REALLY start.

Everything Else TWC / Re: Storm Alert Mode 2011!
« on: August 01, 2011, 01:14:15 PM »
Did TWC send half their team out to cover this Tropical Storm, only for it to fall completely apart as it literally crashed into the dry air?

They sent out Paul Goodloe and Jim Cantore and a NBC reporter was out there but i forgot her name.
I believe Mike Sidel was out there too?
Correct.

It's a shame that happened.  I was really pulling for Texas to get some rain.  But, I also thought, for the size of the storm, it wasn't necessary to have them all out there.

Also, it's nice to see Paul Goodloe out in the field.

Unfortunately this happens a lot in TV..such a shame.

I hope she can find another job real soon!

I bought some gas along with $3 worth of scratch off tickets.  I won a free ticket, which is better than nothing, right?

Wow, I am surprised some of you haven't heard of her.  She has grabbed the headlines quite a few times.

I was shocked when I heard this, but not surprised.  I know the news keeps saying police are not sure what caused the death, but I think most people can speculate what happened.  Her problems aside, she had talent, and it's sad to see a life lost so young.  RIP.

I'll also be out of town from Sunday to Thursday, and from the following Sunday to Saturday.
Wow everyone is travelling! I am in Baltimore at the American Weather Conference. Its fun being around people with a common love for weather
I'm jealous.  Have fun!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the finished product (straight teeth) is TOTALLY worth the hell you will go through.  (Okay..maybe not Hell..but you catch my drift)

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Congrats to Jim Cantore

I don't understand why so many of you guys hate Samantha Mohr. IMO, I think she is one of the better OCM's TWC has hired lately.
I don't 'hate' her, I just prefer other meteorologists over her, that's all.

And, as Matt said, I was just poking fun at the picture.

If they preempt programming, they're expecting ratings/viewership to go up from this coverage, so they can rack up the $$.
Money money money.... it's all TV networks care about these days
As should any business.  Money is kind of an important thing in any business.  I think it always has been about money.  Viewing habits have changed dramatically over the past decade plus.  More and more people spend less and less time watching TV, so when they do, these networks need something that will attract them.  I know many of you don't like hearing this, but "reality" sells.  Shows like Storm Stories and Peter Lik are probably what people want to see, and it's obviously working for TWC.

They just showed a couple old pictures from apparently the 80s..one of Jim, the other was our favorite old OCM picture of all time...

 :thrilled:

This pic scares me.

Congratulations to Jim Cantore.  I have so much respect for him, and he is one of the several meteorologists I look up to.

Can't wait for his next freakout-thundersnow moment :)

General Discussion / Re: Happy Fourth of July!
« on: July 04, 2011, 12:04:45 PM »
Hope you all have a nice 4th.  Celebrated the 4th/my birthday by camping this weekend.  Unfortunately, I have an exam tomorrow so I'll spend my day in a coffee shop studying, and since news never stops, I'll be working tonight.  Saw some neat fireworks last night, though.

Enjoy the day!

I love our ABC affiliate here especially when they do severe weather coverage, but do you think this ad is credible? Does it seem like hype what he's saying about this new radar of theirs?

WSB-TV Stormtrakcer 2 HD Radar Promo

Do I think it is credible? Yes.  Hype?  Not so much.  As I said recently in another thread, severe weather sells.  Seems they are trying to get people to check out their new RADAR, and see why they should trust this station for weather coverage.
