TWC Classics News / Re: New footage from 1991

These larger icons appeared in the 1990-1992 period.
Actually, the big icons only lasted a few months.

I've had XM for several months now and love it. Well worth it if you love music, talk radio, sports, etc and are in your car enough.

General Discussion / Re: Dish Network: I *may* get it...
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:48:36 AM »
My questions are: How is Dish Network (in terms of service, and in general)? Are the HD channels good? What about the DVRs? Is the price for the basic package worth it? I'm also looking for opinions from some of you guys since I know plenty of you have Dish.
1) Terrible compared to the Cox cable I had prior to.
2) Don't know - I don't have HD.
3) Don't have this either.
4) Yes

Unless the person doesn't have a choice, I wouldn't recommend Dish to anyone. It's satellite, so whenever it sprinkles, the channels drop out. Also, every now and then (for no apparent reason), I loose about half my channels. Oddly enough, it's always the same ones. I can get them back by "resetting" the system once or twice, but WTF!?

Now when I say "resetting," I mean unplugging the receiver, waiting five minutes, plugging it back in, and then waiting another ten minutes for everything to load back up. So if it does this while you're watching a show that's on a channel that disappears, you're pretty much screwed. By the time everything is working again, the show is over.

The on-screen guide also has a habit of memory loss. By memory loss, I mean that it often has to "download" the guide. Which takes at least five minutes - each time. And 99.9% of the time, I have to download it 5, 6, 10 times before it actually works.

And don't bother calling customer service. They'll likely just tell you to reset the receiver when it happens. Maybe my standards are too high, but I don't think I should ever have to wait to watch something I'm paying for. :hammer:

Wow, that's really surprising! :o I was under the impression that activity was about the same. Seems like whenever I view new posts, it's just the same 15 or so topics. And usually only one has to do with pre '00 (if I'm lucky).

I made two posts in this section (tropical update maps and PSAs) that I probably should have put in the pre-2000 section.  Sorry about that slip... could someone move them for me?  I should have paid closer attention... I just saw the word "Classic" and I was off.
Fixed. :)

I loved the Fall Foliage Forecast that came later in the mid 90s.

Actually, the FFR goes back to at least 1988.

TWC Classics News / Re: New footage from 1991

There was an "International Weather" segment I used to love, from the late 1980s or very early 1990s.  Focusing on all the changes in Europe back then ("Our country has a new name, your visa is invalid," a customs officer tells an impatient traveler in the commercial), we were told that, even though the weather also changes, The Weather Channel will help keep us prepared. :)

You mean this one?

I think the backgrounds were also for the benefit of (the few, at the time) satellite viewers or those whose WeatherStar was malfunctioning.  Back then, there wasn't the "Travel Cities Forecast" on the national feed, so, without the backgrounds, you just saw a black picture while hearing the local forecast music (and narration!).
Wow, really? I didn't know that (or maybe I did and just forgot :P).

General Discussion / Re: ABC Family to Become ABCF
« on: August 10, 2010, 10:27:36 AM »
Oh it definitely has some "non-family friendly" television. I've caught some of it. Some of the movies and even some shows are a little too adult for younger children to see
Some? I'd say the non family-friendly shows are the norm, rather than the exception. Aside from "Full House," I honestly can't think of one show I'd let little kids watch.

General Discussion / Re: ABC Family to Become ABCF
« on: August 09, 2010, 03:32:12 PM »
I'm not surprised at all. In fact, it makes sense. I've asked for awhile why it's called ABC Family, when judging from its programming, it clearly is not a "family" channel. Sure, they're nowhere near as bad as MTV, but having the word family in the channel name is rather misleading.

1020
Oddly enough, the show still fits on MTV. In fact, I think it fits even more. MTV is basically the go-to cable network for all things trash.
