General Discussion / Re: What is the last thing you bought?

LED bulb for my lamp. $25 and it's no better than a nightlight.  :censored:

Penn State or bust, bro....every school with students spits out meteorology degrees....no one's getting hired, the market's flooded ;) Best schools are above, University of Oklahoma, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M. The rest are junk schools or degree mills. The degrees mean nothing unless the reputation behind them speaks for itself. 1 of every 4 meteorologists has a Penn State degree.

(Take it from someone who is actively looking for jobs in the field.)

Local Forecast / Re: Weatherstar 4000 Locations that remain
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:22:59 PM »
I can account for the 4000 still being in State College, PA as of April 17, 2010 (although they switched from a small local company, D&E, to a national company, Windstream. Goodbye, WS4000.  )

General Weather Chat / Re: Pennsylvania: May 31st curse
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:18:39 PM »
We've had severe weather in 1999, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010 on May 31st (some sort of warning; 1999 and 2003 had tornado warnings, the rest had severe thunderstorm warnings or flash flood warnings on that date).

Don't worry too much about it....the same legalese is what's tying  up the courts in all the RIAA/MPAA filesharing hearings, and has so for about 12-13 years now, and will as long as MP3's exist and the Internet isn't a police state.

(Speaking of that, I could start a thread on that, but there are some prying eyes that would make an example of me, so to keep it, here's Booga Booga Bob, my Caveman and Bodyguard.  :club: )

General Discussion / Re: Some People!
« on: May 27, 2010, 06:27:50 PM »
We had quite a few of those over the summer back in '08 when I worked at the ABC affiliate in Evansville, IN. Sad but true. People can be extremely selfish sometimes, especially when severe weather is in the western parts of the viewing area and the sun's out in the eastern part (and the Plains have some BIG viewing areas, sometimes stretching over half a state.) And even squeezes will get people mad, too, because it shuts off the 1080p HD which "they pay Comcast $10 a month extra of MY money to get."

On the flipside, these same people would b :censored: h and moan if we wouldn't pre-empt Desperate Housewives because a tornado is 3 miles away.  <_<

General Discussion / Re: I finally got a job!
« on: May 27, 2010, 06:20:31 PM »
The best part about NWS? You make good money from the very beginning. I think you'll probably get a G5 level 3 roughly when you start...almost twice as much money as a starting level TV job pays (and quite a bit more than AccuWeather....) but congrats!

Probably will be working somewhere near Silver Spring in the coming years, although with my major, I could end up in Ethiopia, or someplace where Flowmaster exhausts aren't illegal like they are in Virginia  B)

Yea, hopefully this summer, I'll be graduating. (Although I had a rough quiz today sadly....)

Thanks, guys, for the compliments. We're in proximity to a Severe Thunderstorm Watch right now, and rumor has it a lot of the thunderstorms around here get good, dry air around them.

I'm not Jevic Steve BTW...  although I think many, many moons ago, I made one post with an old username (to which I don't know the password.)

Continuing the thread for another couple of videos that I took, which are arguably better than the prior videos. I moved to another apartment in State College, and the first night I spent, we had thunderstorms. Clear air behind the front allowed me to see a very well-developed thunderhead, lit from behind me and shining up in the heavens by the setting sun. Two parts:

Part I: (lightning visible):
Severe Thunderstorm in State College, PA, May 15, 2010 (Part 1 of 2)

Part II (better cut, more closeups, less shaking):
Severe Thunderstorm in State College, PA, May 15, 2010 (Part 2 of 2)

Enjoy and share!

Sad that Dr. Lyons is leaving, but interning at NWS + a TV station and knowing how much an MIC makes vs. television, smart move on his part. We'll miss him at TWC though

General Weather Chat / BUFKIT...pretty awesome!
« on: May 01, 2010, 12:38:06 AM »
I don't know how many of you have ever tried to use BUFKIT before, but if you are a weather geek like me and like to read model soundings, definitely you should try to use it. I discovered it about a couple of weeks ago (and am glad that I did.)

Essentially, what BUFKIT does is access raw data out of computer models such as NAM, GFS, and RUC for a given station, e.g. KLIT for Little Rock, AK, KPIT for Pittsburgh International Arpt, PA, and puts it into a GUI for deciding forecasts.

I actually played with it a bit at NWS last summer, but I am VERY  that NWS made it available for consumption. It's a bit of a hassle putting in the models you want (command line stuff in a complementary program called BUFGET) but once you get it programmed, it's AWESOME.

I have a screenshot below to give you an idea for what this is about. (I picked one to catch your eyes. Look at the Showalter and SWEAT indexes!) But definitely, if you Google it, try it. You'll thank me.

We had another similar storm come through here today...warning and all, although much cooler boundary layer made this more of an elevated convection event. We actually had a tornado warning just to our south, but no reports of wind damage amazingly  :) Strangely, we weren't added to the Severe Thunderstorm Watch to our south until the local WFO (down the street, literally) agreed with SPC to extend it to the NY/PA border with all their counties.

General Weather Chat / My crazy encounter with PA Severe Weather...
« on: April 25, 2010, 03:59:51 AM »
Glad to be back on the boards after the transfer...a lot of schoolwork had to be done, and now it's 4 AM and I'm still awake, heh  :P Anyways, for those of you who haven't seen it already on my YouTube page, I had an encounter about a week ago with a shelf cloud moving into State College, PA. I had my Kodak digital camera rolling, and you can hear me talking about how terrible the storm is on the video.
Severe Thunderstorm in State College, Pennsylvania - April 16, 2010

The true identity of this storm from April 16th of 2010 is a shelf cloud and not anything else I say. I just kept rambling on like an idiot  :dunno: But I hope you like it.
