Best of luck to her!  I hope this job works out.  She's such a great talent and a great professional.

I agree...That's why I am going to update this in the following graphics...Still looking a bit weird or would this do?

BTW, thanks for the constructive criticism :) Feel free to give them cause this is what going to help me be better...

It looks great, and the problem of "two methods in one space" has been solved.  Granted, it's not at all an easy thing to deal with when you have so many small islands like that, and then one or two that are large enough to merit being treated as land.

You know what?  The TV professionals couldn't have done any better than you did in your revised version.  I'm glad you're willing to make modifications and revisions, because that's only going to let the already outstanding quality of your maps get even better.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Harvey
« on: August 20, 2011, 03:41:31 PM »
Harvey only reached 60 mph, and it just made landfall near a place called Dangriga Town on the coast of Belize.  It will not make it to a hurricane now as it heads westward into southern Mexico.

That's what I thought.  I could tell there just wasn't enough time to organize as much as it needed to in order to become a hurricane.  Even the NHC downgraded its forecast before I went to bed last night: the forecast had it with max winds up to 70 mph, and the bulletin said there was a "1 in 3" chance of Harvey getting upgraded to a hurricane.  As we saw, it didn't even get as far as this downgraded bulletin expected.

There just wasn't enough time, and there just wasn't enough space.  Even though the center of circulation was still offshore (although only barely), the storm itself was already interacting with land.

Islands are hard, because highlighting them, by design, has to be different than with land.  However, is there anything you can do so that the Bahamas have either one style or the other?  A faint highlight with two yellow islands in the middle doesn't look so good.

TWC is really hyping this invest and giving a projected path BEFORE it has even become anything (something I don't recall happening before). I'm just wondering if it's going to be much of a threat at all because it's got a lot of land to pass over in the Caribbean before it hits the U.S. I guess rain may be the #1 concern with this storm.

They're not the only ones.  Central Florida TV is doing the same thing.  And it's not the first tropical wave they've done that for this year.

Yeah, you've got a point, and I should have kept that in mind. But still, the fact that we're this far into the name list this early in the season (early being used loosely) is worth noting.

Yes, you're absolutely right.  It is rather interesting to note that, in terms of the number of named storms, this year is pretty much performing the same as the remarkable year of 2005.

I think Harvey developing into a hurricane is going to be a very touch-and-go thing, depending on exactly how close it gets to the coast and when it makes landfall.  Right now, I think it's an even 50-50 bet.  But, since I don't like even 50-50 bets, I'll make it 49-51 in favor of remaining a tropical storm, albeit a potentially maximum-strength tropical storm.

My school has a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol. If you're caught with it in the dorms, you're kicked out. It's a dry campus. Of course, that didn't stop students from risking it; I've seen quite a few alcohol busts.

Interestingly, the University of Massachusetts (my second school) has recently banned all tobacco products from its campus.  When I was there, smoking was allowed outside but not in any buildings.

However, this wouldn't have affected me too much.  My dorm building was already on the very edge of campus, and it was just a very short walk to get off the university's property.  :)

I've been looking at the 2005 hurricane records. Although things looked pretty pathetic compared to that infamous season a few weeks ago, we are now uncomfortably close to the pace of the 2005 season. It all relies on little Jose, who looks like it may have some development trouble as it encounters some dry air in its path.

Jose, in 2005, formed on August 22nd. That's four days away. Although chances are slim in my opinion, if that occurs, we will have officially tied the 2005 pace for at least one day. Our K storm will have to have formed the next day to match Katrina's formation on the 23rd.

Nothing to get excited about, as a lot can change pattern wise, but it is worth noting. Who knows? We may jump into the Greek Alphabet again this year. O_O

I don't think it's going to happen, and not by a long shot.  Conditions in 2005 were different than they are now, and the development of systems was nothing short of phenomenal, especially after the season ended.  After all, it's apparently only once in half a century when a storm carries over into the next calendar year.

This is kinda offtopic, but is the local news in anyone's area that could possibly be affected by Invest 97L hyping this thing up already? Our ABC affiliate sure is.

Yes.  The Orlando/Daytona Beach TV stations are all keeping a close watch on it, and the new text box on the extended forecast on TWC's local forecasts have Thursday highlighted in red saying that the tropics are being watched.

The good news: I'm here in North Dakota and the temperature has not gotten above 85. The stiff breeze also helps.

The bad news: the stuff I was shipping to Grand Forks got placed on the wrong truck, and now my stuff is sitting somewhere in Bismarck. And I won't get it until Monday, so until then, I can't move into my dorm room.

Best part of the day: first day the dorms were open, and two kids have already been busted for alcohol possession. You can probably guess what they came to college for.  <_<

I went to two colleges in the U.S. as an undergrad, and they both had the same policy: a dorm room can have alcohol in it ONLY if both residents of the room were 21 or over, and it could be drunk in the room (and ONLY in the room) only if there weren't any visitors to the room 20 or under.

During my first year (my only year at the first college), my desk was literally right by the door, so I often kept the door open when I was sitting at the desk for ventilation and to give me the chance to chat with anyone who walked by.  However, I was constantly asking people to stay outside of my room if they had alcohol, since I was only 18... and so were the vast majority of people I had to ask.  I didn't care if anyone smoked in the room... with the exception of one person who smoked these terrible tiny cigars that smelled like a tire fire.

TWC needs to be consistent with its icons! :club: Maybe these were "default" with the program or something, but seeing too many different types of icons can be confusing I think.

That's true.  It reminds me of the 1980s, when certain maps had their own icons, distinct from the icons used on other maps.  Order finally came to TWC when the "Weather you can always turn to" period premiered when "You need us for everything you do" ended and all of the maps finally became coordinated.

I loved the edgy jazz of "You need us for everything you do" and the calm serenity of "Weather you can always turn to."  Oh, that was my youth!!

Those are generic ones typically used at local television stations

I don't think there's any such thing as "generic" weather icons.  There are so many that it's really not possible to separate them into "generic" and any other categories, other than describing them by certain attributes.
