Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: August 27, 2011, 01:30:10 AM »
With hurricanes more severe than Irene, TWC still showed the actual LOT8s.  I don't get why they changed now. :dunno:

While there was a more primitive L-bar in previous years, the current incarnation hasn't existed so long, so there weren't any severe landfalling events like this one before the new L-bar came out.

Was Irene affecting this one in any way?

Too far away.

I've been meaning to ask this for the longest time, but are they ever going to fix that pesky glitch of the Satellite LDL being underneath the IntelliStar LDL?

What do you mean?  The Weather Channel broadcasts a nationwide LDL, which local Intellistars cover up with their own LDLs.  If the timing is right, then an Intellistar viewer shouldn't see the national LDL.  Viewers with an XL, 4000, Jr., and no star, however, will see the national LDL.

I wish there were a map that based years on Creation, not evolutionary thoughts or opinions. Thanks for sharing the maps, though!

Creationism is based on religious belief.  Evolution is based on scientific research and analysis.

Just as one would not expect a church to publish scientific information, one would not expect a scientific organization to publish religious information.

Religious beliefs can not be subjected to the tools of scientific analysis, and, therefore, would be inappropriate to include in a scientific study.  In addition, there are religious beliefs that directly contradict scientific analysis and can not be reconciled between the two.  If a choice has to be made between the two, then the person or organization publishing the information must decide whether to be on the side of science or religion.  To fully include both without contradictions is, I think, rather impossible.

During the entire 2-day trip from Massachusetts to Florida I had to listen to my father's collection of the Beatles.  I truly went out of my mind.  :sing:

About an hour ago Daytona Beach got slammed by one of Irene's outermost bands.  It got dark practically in an instant, it started pouring, and the wind got strong enough to make the rain virtually horizontal.  And after about half an hour it was all over.  The clouds look so beautiful, though.

Sounds like a "neat" experience. Now you can technically say you've been in a hurricane, but without getting pounded by the worst of it.

I've lived through two hurricanes before (Gloria in 1985 and Bob in 1991) in Massachusetts.  If only those two had been as brief as my experience with Irene.  :)

This song has been playing over and over and over again in my head since two nights ago.

General Weather Chat / Re: Mandatory evacuation - not for me!
« on: August 25, 2011, 07:26:21 PM »
I have to evacuate tomorrow morning but could we refuse to anyways? I might be staying at the casino

There are always people interviewed on TV who say they'll refuse to evacuate under any circumstances, even if it means death.  People say they'll stay to protect their property from looters, because they don't want to leave home, and so, and so forth.

On the other hand, aren't copyright owners entitled to control how, where, when, and by whom the copyrighted works are published, exhibited, and distributed, and to earn money for these works?

I know I'd feel very cheated if I found my book being sold without my permission and without being compensated for it.  I get royalties for every book sold as compensation for the work I did to write it, and I'd like to think that I receive money for 100% of the books being sold.  If people bought my book from unauthorized sources, they'd get to enjoy the results of my work without any compensation for that work coming back to my publisher or to me.

So how many landfalls can hurricanes truly make? :P

Technically, it's unlimited.  It all depends on its movement, the geography of the land the hurricane passes by, and how long the hurricane can maintain its strength.

General Weather Chat / Mandatory evacuation - not for me!
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:26:54 PM »
Under what circumstances would you refuse to obey a mandatory evacuation order?

What if you were specifically told you would have no access to emergency services during the event and in the immediate aftermath?

What if you were threatened with arrest if you refused to leave?

Suspensions last forever. Unless you file a counter-notification, once it's gone, it's gone for good.

Wow - that's amazing.  Even Facebook gives second chances.

I think it has to be his health.  It's sad how he's suffering, but hopefully losing all of the responsibilities and stress of running a company will allow him to focus on not only treatment, but also enjoying what time he has left, whether it's a lot or a little.
