General Discussion / Re: YouTube
« on: January 18, 2011, 02:13:05 AM »
There have been occasions when some videos will load for me on YouTube without any problems, yet, at the same time, others will not load at all.  As I said, it all depends on what the individual server is doing at any given moment.

It varies depending on the load on the servers.

Actually, The Weather Network does cover the United States in its reports.  Not as in-depth as for Canada, however, and the most emphasis is placed on cities near the Canadian border.

That's great to know she's finally popping back up again despite after what happened to her at TWC. At least she's doing some forecasting again. Great to see she isn't giving up.

If you dont mind me asking what did happen to Cheryl?

She broke the new cardinal rule at The Weather Channel: thou shalt not be a middle-aged woman.

Thank goodness for public broadcasting.  Granted, that won't fill the niche that cable networks once had (in the far distant past by this point), but, still, PBS, NPR, and PRI are generally very good at avoiding the "dumbing down" process.  I think kids' programs on PBS were a LOT better 20-something years ago, but maybe I'm biased.  :)

Does anyone know how long these stupid changes will last? (January 31-               )

Until the end of time.  Or the end of the network.  Whichever one comes first.

Welcome to the forum!  It looks like you and I started watching The Weather Channel at about the same time.

Because you're looking in the ballroom instead of the kitchen.

Why can't there be real canals on Mars?

Right now I'm listening to an album by the Japanese singer Mako Ishino (石野真子).

Everything Else TWC / Re: What would you do to improve TWC?
« on: January 14, 2011, 10:23:40 AM »
The local forecast has been a cornerstone of TWC since the beginning so I'll focus on that. Some suggestions:

1) Current & regional weather conditions should be part of + shown first every LF.

2) 3 minute forecasts at the top & bottom of the hour and possibly increasing the number to eight per hour the way it once was as opposed to six currently. This could be done I assume by eliminating non-weather segments. I realize though changing the number would change the 'local on the eights' concept.

3) Drop the traffic report. It has nothing to do with the weather.

4) Show local current/monthly, yearly precipitation to date along with storm totals both liquid and/or frozen. Perhaps the almanac could expanded or maybe a separate screen.

5) Always show the date along with the time/temp.

1.) I believe the current conditions have already been returned to the start of every flavor, except when there's a weather advisory - that (rightfully) comes first.

2.) Wow, those were the good old days!  Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to happen.  First, it's a lot more convenient for the public to remember that a local forecast (usually) starts at :xx after the hour, rather than the less-predictable (though purposely scheduled) local forecasts of years gone by.

3.) The traffic report has been gone for a while.

4.) You want to cut the fat out of the local forecasts, but you want more of this?  I think that kind of information might be better suited to the LDL, but I don't think it's necessary to devote so much time to almanac data.  There are already almanac and tide screens.  Why add more?

5.) Are you so bereft of a calendar that you need to rely on your local IntelliStar to tell you what day it is? :dunno:

Winter Weather / Re: Possible Winter Storm in the south Sunday and Monday

We only got less than an inch of snow, and some is still on the ground because it is so darn cold here. :brr:

I can imagine 30° seems cold in Dallas!  In Massachusetts, it's quite a good day, and in Russia, where I lived for quite a while, it's a veritable heat wave!

You're definetely right about that. :P I dislike any temperature under 60 degrees, but I'm sure anything above 40 is like a heatwave in Massachusetts, right?

Well, we usually experience a January thaw with temperatures as high as the 60s every year, and this lasts for anywhere from a couple of days to a week.  Hasn't happened yet this year, though, and I think the recent winter storm is to blame.  Actually, we've got much colder air coming in now, so we might have to skip our thaw for the year.   :cry3:

The only way an ENDEC is illegal is if you use it illegally, which means using it to broadcast fake alerts to the public (like if I recorded a zombie attack or something).

Are you sure?  What documentation have you found by the FCC that states this?

A false emergency broadcast can create devastating consequences, at least potentially, which is why I am rather certain the FCC doesn't let just anyone have them.  It would be too hard to trust people with this.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Alexandra Steele Let Go

I wonder how Rich Johnson would know anything about this (unless all laid-off OCMs keep in contact with each other or something like that).

Why is that so hard to believe?  I'm still in contact with people I haven't seen since high school graduation more than a decade ago!
