General Discussion / Re: Economy Tracker

I remember when I had a checking account earning 6% interest during the 90s.  Today, you can't find anything above 1% unless you want a long-term CD.

Sad, isn't it?

And Bernanke still doesn't understand why what he's doing isn't working.  That guy needs to resign now.

...SMOKE FROM NORTHEASTERN MINNESOTA WILD FIRE SPREADING INTO
NORTHERN ILLINOIS...

SMOKE FROM A LARGE WILDFIRE OVER NORTHEAST MINNESOTA HAS BEEN
MOVING INTO FAR NORTHERN ILLINOIS THIS AFTERNOON...DUE TO
NORTHERLY WINDS BEHIND A COLD FRONT WHICH MOVED ACROSS THE AREA
EARLY THIS MORNING. ALTHOUGH THE FIRE IS MORE THAN 400 MILES
NORTHWEST OF THE AREA...THE COMBINATION OF SINKING AIR AND
NORTHERLY WINDS BEHIND THE FRONT HAS TRANSPORTED SMOKE ALL THE WAY
INTO NORTHERN ILLINOIS. THE SMOKE WILL LIKELY PERSIST THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON AND INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS...BEFORE WINDS BECOME MORE
WESTERLY IN ADVANCE OF ANOTHER COLD FRONT WHICH WILL APPROACH
EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING. SMOKE WILL LIKELY CONTINUE TO SPREAD TO
THE SOUTHEAST ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHEAST ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST
INDIANA THROUGH THIS EVENING. EXPECT HAZY SKIES AND A DISTINCT
BURNING ODOR.

THE LAKE COUNTY ILLINOIS EMERGENCY MANAGER REPORTS THAT SMOKE IS
PREVALENT ENOUGH TO CAUSE PEOPLE TO REPORT DIFFICULTY BREATHING
AND BURNING OF THEIR EYES.

INDIVIDUALS WITH RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS SHOULD USE CAUTION WHILE
SMOKE AFFECTS THE AREA.

RATZER

I can smell it a bit.  It's a faint odor, but my eyes are stating to water.

I don't know, the NHC has shifted the path, and if it stays the way it is now, S. Ind. will be in the cone tomorrow.   :o

Now it's extra tropical, so they quit issuing advisories.   :blushing:

I still think you'll get some showers from Lee... maybe.

$3.69 is a pretty popular price here, but I have seen a few at $3.99.

Hurricane Central / Re: 2011 Atlantic hurricane retirement predictions
« on: September 04, 2011, 07:50:28 PM »
What exactly are the criteria for retirement?

Irene caused a lot of damage, but most of the structural damage was caused by flooding rain, NOT wind or storm surge.

A lot of damage, but very little thorough devastation a la Katrina or Andrew.  Honestly, I can see the name "Irene" NOT being retired.

Lee not coming here

I don't know, the NHC has shifted the path, and if it stays the way it is now, S. Ind. will be in the cone tomorrow.   :o

It's already Autumny here, and it feels nice.

Moderate drought and highs near 100 till Saturday.

After all the flooding this spring, who woulda thunk it?

Some models are showing the remnants of TS Lee heading into Indiana.  I just don't want to see any more flooding.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: WOW! Cable is Going Digital
« on: August 30, 2011, 10:09:58 PM »
Not all cable companies make their digital channels accessible without a converter box, however, no matter what capabilities your TV has.  For example, Comcast (at least in Massachusetts where I lived) requires a converter box for ALL channels other than analogue (SD) versions of broadcast channels.  That's all you'll get if you just plug the coax from the wall into your TV, no matter what kind of TV it is.

Same here.  Before Comcast went all digital, you could get several broadcast and cable channels in digital with the built-in digital tuner in your TV (although the channel numbers were weird... TWC is channel 36 under normal circumstances, but in digital it was channel 86.4)

At the time, a buddy of mine had a digital box in his living room (full access to all digital channels in whatever package he had) while his kids' rooms had the standard plugged-straight-into-the-wall connection with the built-in digital tuner (the few select digital channels that Comcast offered).  He used to tell me that the digital picture quality in his kids' rooms was MUCH better than what he was getting with the stupid box in his living room.  And now that I'm having to deal with a box, I agree with him 100%.

I wish they'd go back to the way it was.

Who does the NEA really care about?  Think about it for a while, it obviously isn't the students.

Nope. They only care about their members. In fact, a former union president (at least I think he was a president) said "I'll start putting the needs of students ahead of the teachers when they start paying dues." Wow.

Here's another prime example of this...

I ran across this article this morning, Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world urges congress to stop babying the rich and raise taxes on the rich to reduce the deficit.

For everybody who heard this particular comment from Mr. Buffet, this following article is a MUST READ.

Warren Buffett, hypocrite

This is just TOO funny.   :rofl2:

I love it when people like this get exposed.

Thanks.   B)

We might be seeing Katia soon.  This wave was 20% yesterday, 30% this morning, and 70% now.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Irene

We certainly dodged a major bullet

Fortunately many areas suffered very little damage.  A lot of downed trees and power lines along with some serious flooding, but no major structural damage that I've seen.  I don't expect to see the name "Irene" being retired this year.

After Irene: Little damage seen in many places

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Jose
« on: August 28, 2011, 01:29:41 PM »
My question is: how on God's green earth did Jose form out of a system that NHC had consistently said had a near 0% chance of development? This storm doesn't deserve to be named at all, in my opinion.

A couple years ago there was a system (I can't remember its name).  When I went to bed that night, it had a 10% chance of development on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  In the morning it was a TS.

Meteorologists aren't looking into a crystal ball, they're basically making educated guesses.  Occasionally, things happen that defy explanation.   :dunno:
