Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Irene

We certainly dodged a major bullet

Fortunately many areas suffered very little damage.  A lot of downed trees and power lines along with some serious flooding, but no major structural damage that I've seen.  I don't expect to see the name "Irene" being retired this year.

After Irene: Little damage seen in many places

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Jose
« on: August 28, 2011, 01:29:41 PM »
My question is: how on God's green earth did Jose form out of a system that NHC had consistently said had a near 0% chance of development? This storm doesn't deserve to be named at all, in my opinion.

A couple years ago there was a system (I can't remember its name).  When I went to bed that night, it had a 10% chance of development on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  In the morning it was a TS.

Meteorologists aren't looking into a crystal ball, they're basically making educated guesses.  Occasionally, things happen that defy explanation.   :dunno:

I ran across this article this morning, Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world urges congress to stop babying the rich and raise taxes on the rich to reduce the deficit.

http://news.yahoo.com/stop-coddling-super-rich-buffett-084140678.html

He's been saying that for years. I suppose you can say that for types like him, but not so much for small business owners.

Here's the thing... They only tax what you MAKE (earn), not what you have.  Buffet has already MADE his fortune, so...

Secondly, nobody's stopping him personally from paying more taxes.  PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS, WARREN.

Even with all of that, NBC knew full well she (and Warren Madden for that matter) did hurricane missions at Keesler AFB from time to time. I think both were treated very unfairly by their former bosses.[/color]

Didn't Warren leave TWC voluntarily to take a job with some sort of Aircraft company?  IIRC, he announced it on the old TWCMB.  He still does occasional fill-in work at TWC just like Ryan Goswick.

I think Warren left long before NBC took over.

Local Forecast / Re: Has the L-bar been discontinued?

They will continue to promote programming uninterrupted, unless a tropical system is nearing.

That's another thing.  A few years ago, a minimal TS (I forget which one) was moving parallel to the east coast.  A few of the outer bands were reaching land, but the eyewall never even came close.  TWC went wall-to-wall with it, and I didn't see a LF for at least 4 hours.  And yes, there was severe weather in my area that day.

For me, my best bet is WGN's 24/7 news sister station CLTV.  They normally do "Weather on the 1s."  In times of severe weather, they usually have a small radar image running constantly in the lower left hand corner of the screen, even when they're airing their long form programming.

Haven't seen the L-bar in over a week so maybe it has been discontinued    :dunno:

I'm afraid so.

Me too.

I didn't mind any of the long form programming as long as I'd get an L-bar (and a radar, especially when severe weather is approaching as it was this afternoon) every ten minutes.

Let's face it... when you have severe weather approaching your area, a local radar every 30 minutes just doesn't cut it.

President Obama is "making a statement" at around 1PM Easter/Noon central today.

Here's another "statement" made by Barack Obama...

Quote
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America ’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

Increasing America ’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.

America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

-- Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006

When then-Senator Obama made that statement in 2006, he was 100% correct.  It's a shame that he obviously didn't believe the words he was saying; all he was doing was playing partisan politics.

For starters, taxes for the wealthy have to be raised, and entitlements have to be cut down.

One little problem with the first part of your plan...

IRS: Not enough rich to cover the deficit

Entitlement reform is a necessity.

Because the more you print, the less it is worth, therefore defeating the purpose.

EXACTLY.  That's the main reason why gas costs so much.

And the Fed wants another round of "Quantitative Easing" (i.e. printing more money).  Bernanke is an idiot.

The pattern is beginning to change, finally!

It's been in the low to mid 80s here all week.

But the Dew Point is still in the mid 70s.

Here's what I don't understand.  What's the purpose of a "debt ceiling" anyway?  You'd think it would mean what it says: the most allowable debt PERIOD.  Once the debt ceiling was hit, THAT'S IT.

The "debt ceiling" has been raised something like 50-70 times since 1960.  So in other words, once the spending addicts in D.C. realize that the party's just about over, they just change the rules (i.e. raise the "debt ceiling") so they can continue to feed their addiction (i.e. keep spending).  Why should they care, it's not their money.
