General Discussion / Re: The Pot Belly Stove

Hey thanks guys.  When I meant "I think two guys...." I specifically thought of Billy and Gary...gosh was I right.

After looking over the boards, I think I'll go with the newer one I found because, after doing some figuring, the cost will wind up being lower, even though the board + CPU is more expensive, due to memory being cheaper.

Note to Gary:  That first one that I found was just a earmark for me to start the search.  That board wasn't set in stone at all yet.

Now for two more questions:  will I need to be sure to calculate watts from the power supply and figure it with the board and stuff?  or is that if you're really gonna add extras to the supply (ie lights, extra fans, etc.?)

Glad to be spurring conversation in the boards!  If this is too long-winded for the Stove, you can snip this off and set it by itself if needed (everything about the PC...not just this post.)

So does the 4000, for what it's worth.

I disagree with Billy. Those components you chose look just fine. Here's a tip-when you look for computer parts NEVER judge by age alone. A component that may be outdated may be just the thing you need and nothing more.  :sunglasses:
But if you look at some of the things Matt wants to do with this PC, like 3d modeling and software development, those will definitely run better and take full advantage of a dual core processor.
Just so there's not major spurring match over this...it's very light 3D models.  Nothing too major...I've done just some really rudimentary things, like my house (basically a box with pyramids for the roof).  I got the software free...might as well use it.

Congrats. Welcome to the other side...  :ninja:

Anyway, the case looks fine (reminds me of a Compaq case), but that processor and motherboard are extremely outdated. The AMD 939 architecture is ancient in computing terms. If you're going to go AMD, look look for a socket AM2 motherboard and processor. And I HIGHLY recommend getting a dual core processor like an AMD Athlon 64 X2. Pretty much all computers sold today have multiple cores. If you plan to do any gaming or video editing, dual core WILL pay off.
Gwhahahaha...the dark side.

Yeah...I was looking right away more at price, speed, and size of the board (need several slots for cards)...figured someone better would help me with "quality"...lol...anyway...I found this motherboard/CPU combo.  Kinda leans toward what you were talking about with the dual core (I haven't personally seen a difference between AMD and Intel processors...so for me it's kind of a price thing), and it is a socket AM2 board.

Also kinda like it takes DDR2 memory...cheaper from what I've seen so far.   ;)

Well...I would like to share an "undertaking" that I'll soon be taking part in.  I've finally decided to build my own computer.  The laptop I've had for two years now has almost ground to a halt, and the hard drive is a little too small for what I'll be doing in the future and what I've been doing. Namely:

 - web site development
 - light software development
 - Flash design and programming
 - my TV tuner
 - gaming
 - 3-D modeling (mainly for personal use)

Here's some of the stuff I want to get.  I think a couple of you are a little more versed in this stuff than I am...maybe some advice?

Case
Processor + Motherboard

I've already got a video card, hard drive(s), and a DVD drive.

Too old? And since when has anything on TWC been judged on the basis of popularity?

(starts thinking about that "21 Million people watched and made this the most watched premiere episode of WWCH" commercial)

I gotta say...this is a dang good list.  I haven't heard much overnight (someone help there?), bu daytime is bang-up and primetime isn't shabby.

Props for using Broad Street (first in 16 yrs) and I love Rose Colored Glasses.

I'd buy up some more songs, but I'm out of iTunes money right now.   ;)

Was Weather Center full-controlled today? They showed stuff that I don't normally see in a master controlled show.
Yes because they cancelled SS
Wait...they cancelled Storm Stories?  Or was it just because of the severe weather the last couple of days?

Yeah, that song goes wayyyyy back. I think it was last played in either 1990 or 1991.
Aug 6, 1992 - Mar 31, 1993.

And I'm starting to think the primetime/evening lists are either gonna be really bad or REALLY good.  With "When Summer Comes", "Broad Street", "Storm Front" so far...it's good.

(hopes for Layla in primetime)

Programming and Graphics / Re: Storm Stories going into syndication

Good.  Once it becomes a hit in syndication, then can it on TWC.

Woah...after further review, read this:

Quote
Set to launch this fall, Litton has established customizable format options for the series 143 half hours in which  stations can insert local weather or news updates, or segments with The Weather Channel host Jim Cantore, three times over the course of the show.

Litton is also supplying stations with the "Storm Stories Production Handbook," which enables local broadcasters to localize the programming via a Web-based interface.
That's really interesting...I wonder what "localizing the programming" is.

Hmm...interesting.

The one time I flew with TV's in the seats, TWC didn't have an LDL.

Both times I was in Orlando at Disney World there wasn't a STAR.  Both times stayed in the park, too.
