TWC Fan Art / Re: Michael's TWC Fan Art Portfolio
« on: July 21, 2014, 09:42:38 PM »
It's been over 2 years since I've posted any TWC-related artwork as I've been exploring around Dallas/Fort Worth. Plus I was running out of ideas and I was on Facebook most of the time.

Anyways, as many of us know, Belo Corp. has been purchased by Gannett Company. Even before that transaction, The Weather Channel would've been better off under Belo's ownership. Not because it was based in Dallas (although it's true), but because the local news stations (like ABC-affiliate WFAA-TV) have the most respected personnel. Let's rewind to around 2006/2007 before TWC's "downfall".

TWC Belo End Tag:

TWC Belo End Tag with Warning Crawl:

DISCLAIMER: All known materials are property of The Weather Channel and TWC Interactive. The Belo Corp logo has belonged to--well, duh. Belo Corp. via the YouTube video below with the end tag starting at the 14 second mark (too bad I couldn't find a cleaner version of this eventhough I've set it at the highest quality possible). The Warning crawl was created by Billy.

Treverton, howdy neighbor!

As for me, here are the stations I listen to:

 - NOAA Weather Radio (Weather) - For 24/7 weather information.
 - KERA 90.1 (News/Talk-Public) - For an occasional NPR broadcast as well as "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me"
 - 91.7 KXT (Adult Alternative-Public) - This station has a wide selection of music from mainstream to uncharted territory.
 - KZPS LoneStar 92.5 (Classic Rock) - For great classic rock from The Eagles, Phil Collins, The Rolling Stones, and many others.
 - KBFB 97.9 The Beat (Urban Contemporary/Hip-Hop) - There are still a few great rap/hip-hop artists out there.
 - 98.7 K-Luv (Classic Hits) - There are tons of classic songs I like to listen to. My mom actually introduced me to this station when it was all oldies.
 - KLUV 98.7 HD2 (Oldies) - There are some oldies I like.
 - KJKK 100.3 Jack FM (Variety) - Why? Why not? Out of the blue, they have played some of my favorite songs.
 - KJKK 100.3 HD2 The Sound of The Strip (Vegas Jazz Standards/Oldies) - Who doesn't love listening to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc. all.
 - KJKK 100.3 HD3 The Indie-Verse (Indie/Alternative) - I love Indie stuff. 'Nuff said.
 - KDGE 102.1 The Edge (Alternative) - Some great alternative hits I can rock out to.
 - KDMX 102.9 Now (Hot AC) - Has a good mix of songs. Not nearly as adventurous as KXT.
 - KHKS 106.1 Kiss FM (Top 40) - There are a dozen artists that can be the saving grace of this format such as Fun., Lorde, Imagine Dragons just to name a few.
 - KMVK 107.5 HD2 The Oasis (Smooth Jazz) - My only terrestrial source for smooth jazz.
 - WBAP News/Talk 820 - My main radio news source. (Also on KPLX 99.5 HD2)
___________________________

On iHeartRadio:

 - World Class Rock (Adult Alternative) - Like KXT, an eclectic mix. Although a bit more mainstream. Also broadcasting on KZPS 92.5 HD2.
 - Hawai'i No Ka Oi (Hawaiian) - It's the closest thing to a Hawaiian vacation.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / IS #22105 Not Working
« on: June 10, 2014, 01:05:33 PM »
I tuned to The Weather Channel and saw the national LDL, thinking it's another typical miscue of the Intellistar for Grand Prairie, Irving, & Lewisville. But when we got to the LOT8s, I saw that the IS is not working at all. Please look into this. Thanks!

Headend: Time Warner Cable
Local WX ID: #22105

Fort Worth Councilman Joel Burns, nationally known for his efforts to stop bullying in schools, sent a tweet to The Weather Channel Monday morning. The response he received set off a storm with Twitter viewers across the U.S.

To be fair, Fort Worth is a part of the DFW area. What does one expect? Though TWC does need to add more photos including other major cities. Not just the known ones (Dallas) but also its nearby (Fort Worth) counterpart(s) as well.

For some reason, I've gone on a frenzy with the free music downloads from the Coke Zero March Madness Bracket Challenge. I only received the first 3 free MP3s. But throughout today when I logged in, I got one free pack after free pack after free pack!  B) I think it's probably due to the upsets that destroyed several brackets, including mine...for the most part. Anyways, as before, the free downloads are from the Universal Music Group catalog.

The weather here in Texas may be a bit chilly come this weekend (albeit low temps.), but we're not gonna see any freezing weather anytime soon. I'm hoping this will be Winter 2013-14's last breath.

General Discussion / Re: NWS website redesign
« on: March 05, 2014, 08:45:03 AM »
I'm really glad those headlines are highlighted now, and I like seeing the changing weather conditions within a period.  However, dual icons with no space between them will be a problem until the public becomes familiar with it.  There is a learning curve with recognizing the new icons and combinations that may occur within a period, but I'm going to help you all now. ;)  Here is a "before" and "after" page of the NWS icons based on all possible conditions that any METAR report could show along with any forecasts that could be made:

http://innovation.srh.noaa.gov/newicons/icons.html

Thanks for providing that link, Patrick.  I actually didn't know some of those icons existed, like the tornado and funnel cloud ones.  I wonder if an ASOS station has ever been able to report a tornado at the exact time the hourly observation was taken to display that icon?

Regardless of whether they do the split-icon thing and the highlighting of the alerts in effect, I really think they should switch to the new icon set, as they are just so much clearer than the old ones.  And I know the old ones were originally created for and used on the old NWS design and got pixelated when they became enlarged for use on the newly designed webpages.

I guess I only have problems with a couple of the icons.  For example, with the rain/snow, it's hard to tell that it's rain in the background since they overlay the icons and don't do the diagonal slash thing anymore.  I guess any new icon set will take a learning curve, but I do think they will be better in the long-run.

BTW, out of curiosity, does anyone know where they get these pictures from?  Some look computer-generated while others look like actual pictures taken by a professional that they must use.

I actually like the newer icons. It's basically a refreshed look to their current ones.
