General Weather Chat / T.S. Hermine in North Texas. One Year Later...
« on: November 21, 2011, 10:11:11 PM »
I figure I'd pass along this news story I got on my Facebook homepage from WFAA-TV. The Condominiums in Arlington, which were flooded by Tropical Storm Hermine back in September 2010, are being demolished to make way for a new park.

Quote from: Craig Civale - WFAA
Flood prone condominiums to become part of new Arlington park

The first of fourteen complexes were torn down Monday in Arlington at the former site of the Willows Condominiums.

The homes were flooded back in September 2010 when a tropical storm swept through the area.

The city of Arlington purchased the damaged condos earlier this year, along with 49 other flood-prone homes around Rush Creek. The plan is to turn the development into a new park.

OK, boredom has struck me. Back around 2 to 3 years ago, a friend of mine in Fort Worth I would occasionally visit used to live in an apartment complex served by Ygnition Cable before moving last year. She told me that Ygnition re-transmits via Dish Network, so I didn't expect any "local" LOT8s on The Weather Channel. So an idea came to my head: if Ygnition was able to obtain the WS4000, what if their station idents at :57 past the hour clash with Dish Network's?

NOTE: I know Dish Network's IS doesn't carry a channel number in their ID, but I went ahead and added it anyway.

DISCLAIMER: All known materials are property of The Weather Channel and TWC Interactive. Dish Network and Ygnition logos (that overlap) as well as the Sirius & XM logos belong to their respective owners.

And just for the heck of it, on my alternate version, I did the same text using both the Interstate Bold-Condensed and the Star4000 Large fonts.

General Discussion / Re: Nationwide EAS test
« on: November 13, 2011, 11:56:33 PM »
The National EAS test failed in the North Texas area as well. WBAP News/Talk (broadcasting on 820 AM & 96.7 FM) is the primary EAS station for my area. Although the EAS tones are sequenced right, WBAP never received the message, then all relaying stations didn't either. WBAP's FM simulcast did get an audio message, but it's a faint Spanish Broadcast with multiple EAS tones in the background.

I'm gonna go ahead and post a couple YouTube links for comparison purposes.

WBAP 820 AM (Ident and test starts at 1:53 mark)

General Discussion / Satellite TV Booth Fail

Last weekend, my friends took me to Trader's Village in Grand Prairie, TX and it's a good thing I tagged along, otherwise I wouldn't have uploaded my latest submission to FailBlog.

You can see the odd satellite TV booth setup on this link.

Cool concept, but I think this is already the case with long-form. The only local forecasts shown are at :28 and :58. The LDL is what provides local forecast information for :08 and :18 during long-form and is no longer shown for the entire duration on long-form.
I know that. I just wanna show what would happen if the current LF settings for long-form programming would be further shortened...as in...hard to read.

An idea came to me last night: what if the "Local On the 8s" was further truncated (shortened) during long-form programming? I know what you wanna say... "DON'T TEMPT THEM!!!" This is based off of TV Guide Channel's truncated TV listings during their Red Carpet coverage (seen on wikipedia via this link)

General Discussion / Jerry Haynes, "Mr. Peppermint", dies at 84
« on: September 26, 2011, 02:13:04 PM »
Dallas-based actor/broadcaster Jerry Haynes, known by his fans as "Mr. Peppermint" died at 84 from complications due to Parkinson's Disease. His show "Mr. Peppermint", retitled as "Peppermint Place" from 1975 to the show's end in 1996 became the longest-running locally-produced show in WFAA-TV's history. Eventually, the show was syndicated to 108 other markets across the country. He also appeared in more than 50 motion pictures, including "Places in the Heart," "Robo Cop" and "Boys Don't Cry." He starred in a variety of TV movies and shows as well, among them: "Dallas" and "Walker, Texas Ranger." He also witnessed the JFK assassination in 1963 when he was at Dealey Plaza. The TV icon will surely be missed.

Quote from: Jerry Haynes a.k.a. Mr. Peppermint
I want to remind you: Sometimes things don't go too well and you're not feeling a real good mood. When you feel unhappy, nothing seems worthwhile. Just give yourself a peppermint mint and you will wear a smile.

Michael. if you had a new icon set (for the Intellistar) you would show to TWC could you show us what it would look like?

To answer your question, it may take a year or so (wanna make sure they're close to perfect), but yeah I'd do it if I have some free time on my hands.

General Discussion / Re: Carmageddon DFW

The :censored: DMN site wants me to get "Subscriber Access" to read the story. Do you mind posting the full story here? Obviously, it's going to be a long and painful project. I will not be driving on that interstate for a matter of years.

I hate it when it does that. Got the same thing on my end.

Although when I checked WFAA-TV's site, there's an update. http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/635-bridge-delay-6p-129565013.html

Just in case it asks for a "subscription", here's the full story.
Quote
This was supposed to be the first of many congested weekends on LBJ Freeway as the construction project on 635 begins. Drivers will not have to deal with traffic this weekend, but only because of a delay in the just-underway construction project.

The demolition of the Joe Ratcliff Pedestrian Bridge between Marsh Lane and Webb Chapel Road over the freeway was delayed. However Trinity Infrastructure, the contractor in charge of the project, said the delay is no reason to lose faith in the project.

"I would think that this delay would actually instill a little bit more confidence in this project," said Lara Kohl, a Trinity Infrastructure spokeswoman. "We take this very serious. We've done a lot of analysis by a couple of different parties about this construction phase and this demolition phase, and even the slightest bit of concern caused us to take a little bit more time and look at this process."

Though the bridge is smaller than a regular car bridge, Kohl said it is trickier to demolish.

Three weeks ago, neighbors came out to say goodbye to the bridge, which helped kids cross the freeway to go to school for four decades.

The new bridge is scheduled to be completed in January of 2012 and a Trinity Infrastructure spokesperson said the bridge would be done on time.

General Discussion / Carmageddon DFW
« on: September 09, 2011, 07:26:50 AM »
Remember when Los Angeles had their "Carmageddon" with the temporary closure of I-405 2 months ago? Well, this is Dallas/Fort Worth's version of it. Parts of I-635 in Dallas will be closed off with the demolition of the Joe Ratcliff pedestrian bridge. Although it's not gonna be a complete closure, it'll still cause some travel headaches. So those traveling to or around Dallas, take alternative routes.

Long story short: Avoid LBJ Freeway in Dallas this weekend (from The Dallas Morning News)
