General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch
« on: June 14, 2010, 09:19:44 PM »
With special thanks to Patrick, I finally have a better understanding of my laptop. First, let me explain that Windows has a rating system from 0 to 7.9 that rates things like hardware and graphics in terms of performance. Here are my ratings:

Processor: 4.9
Memory (RAM): 5.9
Graphics: 3.9
Gaming graphics: 3.8
Primary hard disk: 5.5

Graphics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Display adapter type ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
Total available graphics memory 1918 MB
        Dedicated graphics memory 256 MB
        Dedicated system memory 0 MB
        Shared system memory 1662 MB
  Display adapter driver version 8.533.0.0
  Primary monitor resolution 1440x900
  DirectX version DirectX 10

There in lies the problem. Graphics rating is horrible, especially for what I demand out of my computers.

Quite a few laptops at Bestbuy with i7 under 1500
There's the same laptop I saw at Staples, HP Envy, for about $300 less. Still a lot of money. I may have to stick with HP if they are going to give me a ticket for a new computer.

Oh believe me, I want an i7. Problem is, I can only find one computer with it. Period. A $2,000 computer at Staples... which I do not have the money for. I found a decent computer for the same price I bought my current laptop, with an i5... would that work for what I do with it? I'm curious as to why the computer is that much cheaper. Other thing is too... isn't this the first year that Intel's "i series" has been out? I've always been told it's not a good idea to buy technology that is in its first year.

Funny you should mention about the 8th city thing. When Brian modified the xl coding to accept emulator data the CC and 8th city data being inputed had to be the same or it would throw a fit
One of the reasons I brought it up was just that I noticed the Petoskey and TC XL's each have their own main city on their 8 city, but not each other, if you know what I mean. So wait, you're saying the main site does or does not have to be on the emulator's 8 city?

Anyone here good with processors? I'm going to be going out to the Staples location in Howell at some point, but the more advice or help, the better.

Are your parents moving with you or are you going to be on your own again?
He's just going to be on his own again. Seeing as how he will probably be too busy to even hear himself think, it shouldn't be a problem for him :P

According to the wording of the latest statement put out by the NHC, the storm is in a marginally conducive environment and will continue to move into more difficult environment. I'm doubtful on this storm forming into Alex.

Well golly, my Intellistar just froze on me, except this time I saw it live. Froze several times during the LF, and then aborted halfway into the text based. This has been happening a lot the past couple of months, but I'm not so sure I should report it. More pressing issues, imo.

Speaking of Alejandro, that was aired again on WUWA this morning. Caught it on the HD feed

TWC HD is on Charter in Corinth, Texas.
Which is near Dallas, which I mentioned.

It sucks that NBC is canning Law and Order..
Yah, but it was bound to end sometime. It's just not the same without Lenny. And I'm not crazy about the current assistant DAs.
Exactly my point as well, Matt.

The other thing to consider is that I don't have (and really don't have the means of supporting) a credit card either. I make some money, but it's not like a steady job. I have to rely on my parents for buying a lot of things, and I can't expect my mom to pay for a lot of songs. I happened to get a gift card for my birthday from a relative.

The HD STAR won't be just for big cities, as long as your cable company carries TWC HD and you have a STAR unit in your city.
It could just be due to the size of the area, but I have not seen TWC HD in any of the locations I've been to in Michigan's Charter territory. I'm doubtful Charter carries TWC HD in any of its area, actually. I can see Charter buying HD STARs for St Louis or Dallas, but certainly not northern Michigan.

Odd, the screen was scrunched from 16:9 to 4:3 on PME just now. Looks like they still haven't completely ironed out the LDA.

That may be true, but Charter's ads are better, for a lot of reasons. I really like these three, for example:

"Love"

"Faces"

"Birds and Turtles"
