General Discussion / Re: The Pot Belly Stove
« on: December 21, 2011, 12:48:43 PM »
Speaking of Google, I noticed sometime yesterday that the search engine had changed their navigation a little by putting the links to Web, Images, Videos, etc. on the left side of the screen instead of at the top.  But today, I'm noticing it has returned to normal with navigation at the top.  Did anyone else notice the change?  I can't say I really liked it, because I have been so use to the "top" navigation for so long now.  But maybe nothing happened, and I was just on beta.google.com. :P

surprised that this hasn't been mentioned, but it looks like TWC may be revamping it's website:

http://beta.weather.com/

It's already been mentioned over in General TWC discussion ;)

Yeah, it's been mentioned...here...by me. :P

Well, technically it isn't a "Local on the 8s" if they're cuing the forecast at :19 or :49. :P

Lol, the problem was the batteries in the temperature sensor were loose.

Anyway, I found this EXTREMELY strange thing this morning on weather.com

Why would the air temperatures surrounding Florida be colder than the temperatures on land? I'm pretty sure that the warm ocean temperatures would keep the air above the water slightly warm, but this just goes against what I said:

Something is seriously wrong with weather.com's information today. For example, right now, weather.com says Corpus Christi, TX is 55 degrees.  But all other websites are reporting that the current temperature is 70 degrees.

The gradients on the temperature map and the current temperature listed for the city do match up, but they are very inaccurate.  What's causing this?

Winter (which hasn't officially started yet) is pretty much the same here so far (Texas/Oklahoma).  I feel like it's actually been colder than normal: highs anywhere in the 40s to 50s with maybe a 60-degree day or two thrown in there.

Both the southeast and northeast have already had a major snowstorm.  I guess the northeast will typcially see much more snowfall by this time of year , but isn't the southeast experiencing pretty normal conditions right now?

Question.  What program do I need to have to view videos on weather dot com?

Probably Adobe Flash Player.  Have you ever been able to view videos?  There are some dayss in which they will simply not load for me.  Or you may not have the latest version of Flash Player.

Don't forget Todd Santos, Eric Fisher, and Mark Elliott. I despise them all. <_<
I agree. Not fans of any of them. And add Crystal Egger to that list.

Yeah, I've already mentioned her, and Tavores added Chris Warren.  I know we're deviating from talk about Samantha Mohr here, and I apologize, but I'm frustrated that all these newbies don't even bother with how they present themselves. <_<  Such apathetic attitude that I receive from some of them really makes we want to tune-out of the channel.

Obviously the specific reason for her layoff is private and none of my business, but if it was, for any reason, the lack of personality or being too dull, then they need to get rid of Crystal Egger pronto. <_<

How long was Samantha Mohr at TWC?  For some reason, I don't think it was that long, certainly not as long as some of the veteran meteorologists who were laid off.  And, although we have now received official confirmation from Martin, I would almost want to leave myself if I was demoted from being on Weekend View, to being a freelancer at TWC, to only doing weather.com forecasts.  But maybe this was all just the "phase" TWC sent her through of being laid off.

Best of luck, Samantha! :D

I am not in a broadcast curriculum.  It is strictly meteorology, which also surprises me that they don't have a class for strictly broadcasting.  Like I said before, several alum said they didn't learn to forecasting until an internship or their first job, kind of upsetting if you ask me.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense.  Here at Oklahoma, they will offer the "forecasting" classes in the normal curriculum.  And if you want to become a broadcast meteorologist, then you can get a minor in broadcast meteorology by working with the College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Well, Samantha Mohr was not my favorite meteorologist, but it is sad to see that they let another one go. :(

OK guys, here I go again with making posts before thinking twice. :wall: For some reason whenever I type weather.com into my browser, I am automatically re-directed to beta.weather.com.  This new design was on the front page of beta.weather.com.

So I guess the design really was in beta. :P  Sorry for the confusion.  I have no idea if this will roll out eventually or not.

Speaking of that, I just found out a couple weeks ago that my meteorology program at my school does not offer forecasting courses.  Some of the alum have said they didn't learn until their first job or at their internship; I'm definitely going to have my eyes and ears open with this internship.  I mean, really?  You're not going to teach future meteorologists how to forecast?  Is this normal?  Do you just take what you've learned about meteorology and the atmosphere and then apply it to the forecasting models?

If your meteorology program is just considered Broadcast, then I would suspect that no forecasting courses are offered because broadcast relies heavily on communication as compared to actual forecasting.  I bet you have to take some courses in communication, right?

Sorry about the double post, I just saw this article not too long ago. It's about time, this is what made a lot of commercials annoying.

Blaring Commercials No More: FCC Passes Rules to End Loud Commercials

OMG, thank goodness!  It's honestly ridiculous that stations would make their shows barely audible but then make a person deaf when the commercials came on.

OK wow, don't know when this happened, but weather.com has changed its look...again.  The changes are very minor, mainly only with the city search and menu bars at the top.  So far, I don't like it.  The navigation is confusing.

This could be in a beta mode, so if you don't see a difference, it may just be TWC testing something.  I've attached a screenshot below so you all can see what I'm talking about.
