General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch

From the looks of it, I think the transition is still being made.  Or perhaps it is a beta test.  Because the only pages that have them so-far are the "Today," "5-Day," and "10-Day" pages, from what I can see.

They definitely look very "app-like," though I think they're slightly different from those used on the iPhone app (not sure about the iPad).  Why does TWC need all these different icon sets?
The iPhone app still uses the icons weather.com had prior to these ones.

You're right!  I meant to say the mobile version of weather.com.  They're kind of similar.

Did anyone else notice the new icons on Weather.com?

Whoa!  Wonder why the one for the "Current Conditions" isn't updated, though?

Wait, are you guys talking about the normal aerial views or the newer 45° views?
We're talking about the normal aerial views. You can check all the satellite photos taken in your area with Google Earth. Just one thing, the dates aren't always correct.
I know that. However, in my area, you have a choice between normal aerial views and the 45° aerial views.

Is that on Google Earth (the program) or Google maps (the online site)?  I had seen that 45° feature on the maps website I believe and LOVE it (I know Bing has something similar with their Bird's Eye view, but it is very out-of-date).  But I cannot seem to find the feature anywhere on Google Earth. :hmm:

Yeah, I don't think there's a 45° feature on Google Earth, nor have I seen it on Google Maps, but I don't use Google Maps that much. I know in Google Earth you can "tilt" your view, but it's not a real 45° view. The only 45° viewing feature I've seen is on Bing, which I would agree, is very outdated. From what I've seen, they're pictures from 2004/2005-ish.

EDIT: Nevermind, Google Maps has 45° viewing but it's not for everywhere like where I am located.

One thing I noticed on Bing's 45° (Bird's Eye) view is that the image will change and either become more outdated or more recent if you zoom in and out and even pan far enough in another direction.  Their maps have often been very inconsistent because a different image from what looks like an entirely different year will show if you pan far enough to one side.  This could, however, be due to the way the maps are assembled.

And can someone please tell me if Google's 45° view works for their location (besides you, Zach, I guess you can get 45° images in your area).  Because I have always tried several spots, including major cities, and the 45° imagery has never been available. <_<

I think WCL is in a good spot. I watched WCL at 4/3 Central today, and the first thing they said after the opening graphics, was:  it’s 4:00 and that’s the time that a forecast update comes out from the Global Forecast Center.  So, we’ve now got 2 very good OCMs plus Storm Tracker Cantore telling the latest information.   I think that works. When there is severe weather, when TWC “decides to cover it outside of the regular WCL block”, I wonder if TWC will get better ratings?        I often wondered what the ratings would do if TWC put a big name at 4PM, like A and/or B, Cantore, now Chris, Crystal and Cantore.  Don’t get me wrong, Nick and Viv are great. I just wonder if a bigger name would pull in higher ratings when severe weather hits in late PM into evening and overnight.

WCL at 1pm in CA???? That is odd!!!  I don’t know how to fix that issue!

We all have our opinions, and I'm not trying to attack you here, but I really don't think Chris and Crystal are the best OCMs out there, if you are referring to them in this post.  I highly wish someone like Paul Goodloe was back on the early primetime slot, rather than the much later one.

In response to Mike's post: I can't believe TWC is showing programs like that.  IMO, that's going way downhill.

And finally, in response to Christina's post: Obviously TWC's ratings aren't doing too poor, if they are able to add all this long-form.  Unfortunately, they always seem to "win" because they know when to pre-empt and earn tremendously high ratings during severe weather/hurricanes.

This new schedule seems weird.  At least there's none of this "Day Planner" when the day's more than half-over stuff anymore, but one hour of WCL at 4:00 pm then back to long-form until 7 seems very silly.  Especially (though I know this wasn't always the case) since WCL has the theme of being a "night" show, if you know what I mean.

Also, aren't Nick and Vivian doing DP from 11 am to 2 pm?  weather.com's guide is incorrect; still showing Carl and Heather hosting.

They should bring back PM Edition to weekdays at 4pm. When WCL airs at 4PM ET, it is 1PM in the West Coast which is still afternoon. WCL during the afternoon is silly.

I was just thinking that same thing.  But perhaps with WCL being on again at 7 pm eastern (4 pm pacific), they made up for it.  Are there any promos mentioning something like "Watch WCL, Weekdays at 4 Eastern/Pacific"?

If Crystal was working the late-night WCL shifts, then who was working the earlier ones at 7 PM eastern?

Also, I really like Heather Tesch, so I hope the disappointment about that change is more for the loss of Maria than it is for Heather taking over Maria's spot, because I think Heather will do a good job.  Still miss the days when she was on YWT and then DP, though. :(

Finally, what happened to Carl Parker?  Is he on regularly anymore?  I remember he and Heather used to do the "earlier" DP shifts.

Got a flight to catch out of DFW at 2:50pm this afternoon...hopefully I can make it out before the storms roll through.

I really wish they would get rid of HiRAD, but I know they won't. The sky conditions that get reported on the IS here is usually always wrong too. If it says Partly Cloudy or Fair, it's Cloudy and vice versa, it's very annoying and it's slow about updating when precip moves in. The temp readings here aren't as bad as the sky obs are though, but sometimes they're way off base also.
I agree. I'm fine with using it for temps but its not too good at sky conditions

Hmm...well this might explain that whenever it's clearly hazy or even dusty outside, the sky obs only report as "cloudy."

Hey guys, we have a new artist on the forums!  The awesome St. Patrick's Day logo that you now see (thanks for putting it up, Martin) was made by Zach.  Hope you enjoy it.  Happy St. Patrick's Day! :D

Well, I had a weather sensor in the sun once (it was a nicer one by LaCrosse), and IIRC, the temperature would read as 90°F when the actual conditions outside were around 70°F.

That's obviously not happening right now . . .

Current Conditions
Cloudy 72°F
