General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch

Guys, I think we go through this too much.  There have always been just some days when not a lot of people are online, or when there is simply not much to say.  It's usually never permanent.  I would only worry about the decline in activity if such quietness lasted for over a week.

Good gosh!!!  Well, the NWS is clearly having problems getting data from the AWOS observation station at Temple, TX (which is about two hours south of Dallas).  Either that, or I feel sorry for the residents of Temple who have seen blistering hot temperatures and below freezing temperatures all in a day. :P  See this link for the error.

And in case NWS fixes the error before you're able to see it live, I've attached a couple of screenshots.

93°F Mostly cloudy

So much for the rain and cold front.  It's like we're in the eye of a hurricane; the rain has just been circling around us. <_<

How many times have we been through something like this, and how many times has the threatened "blackout" ceased to happen? :whistling:

Yeah, I am with Martin on this one.

Honestly (and I am talking to all of our members out there), posts with just one word or just an emoticon will ALWAYS be frowned upon, unless necessary (and ONLY when necessary) for certain Game Room games.  I understand the rules say "repeated posts" like such are frowned upon, but in reality, any posts with a single word or emoticon are treated as spam, as Patrick indicated, and will be deleted.  Certainly you can contribute a little more to the discussion.

In light of all the talk about the heatwave in the East, even the Metroplex managed to get another 100+ degree day to go in the "weather data books" for 2012.

I am only posting this because, though triple-digits are certainly not a rarity in Dallas and in July for that matter, we too had our little version of a heatwave.  And because, so far, this summer is no where near as brutal as last, so triple-digit days are not an everyday occurence and can actually count as news.  This time last year, we were at 14 out of 71 triple-digit days for the year. :fear:

Yeah, as I noted in The Front Porch yesterday, it appears these current conditions went out the day in which the NWS converted to their new website design.  It may just be a coincidence since I don't see how a design change can affect something like this, but I still think that's what caused it.  We're just going to have to be patient and see if the problem fixes itself, or if Martin can somehow look into this further.  Thank you.

99° Increasing clouds/windy

Strong storms approaching from the northeast.  Hopefully they don't dissipate before they get here.

I just noticed that the current weather information under all of our profiles aren't working.
That's a problem on HAMweather's end, not ours. It's happening on my HAMweather page as well.

Yeah, they've been broken for quite a few days now.  I noticed they went out as soon as NWS changed to their new website design, so I think that might have something to do with it.  If this is a problem on HAMweather's end, then I guess there's nothing we can do about it.  To be honest, I personally have no idea how to access the information, but I may contact Patrick or Martin just to double-check that there's not a link problem on the forums.

Though it's an NBCUniversal station and has probably happened before, it was interesting and just a little different to see TWC advertising a show on E! for their LOT8s bumper.

General Discussion / Re: NWS website redesign

The NWS has officially launched their new design, but as predicted, it is only for the main weather.gov page and the forecast pages at this point (from what I can see).  Right now, a lot of links seem to be broken on the forecast pages.  I know this is always a problem when launching a new website design, but hopefully they will be fixed soon.

Also, I am noticing on the forums that none of the weather observations are working.  Could this be a result of their new website design (b/c I know the information comes from the NWS)?

They really need to fix the icons on the new layout for the relaunch because resizing them just blurs them.

I know, I totally agree with you Zach.  Unfortunately, I don't think the NWS, or the general public for that matter, cares much about this, so it probably won't happen. :(  To me, it looks like they made them a little better than before, but they are still very pixelated.

As far as the transition of all pages to the new design, I somehow feel that it's going to be a very slow process.  And it's possible that some of the pages may never recieve the new update.  Just look at weather.com.  When was the last time they updated their "Monthly" page? :whistling:

We shall see about all of this come July 2...

Wow, the NWS is really :censored: me off right now.  I am trying to go the local forecast pages, and all I get is this error message:

Array ( 0 => Could not connect to host server: mysqlread.md.nids.noaa.gov Can't connect to MySQL server on 'mysqlread.md.nids.noaa.gov' (4) )

Frustrating.
