All of you guys just starting school, and I'm already three weeks in. :bleh:

And Patrick, there are plenty of people who had to work the entire holiday weekend, so I pretty sure you don't have to say you were one of the only few.

I've got so many browsers installed on my computer: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. :P  And call me old fashioned, but I still use Internet Explorer 8.  I can't STAND the new one!

But I mainly alternate between IE and Firefox.  Maybe I should start trying out Chrome now, judging by the above comments.

Matt, did you take down your classic TWC classics archive? When I go to classic.twcclassics.com, the URL remains the same but I get the main website instead of the classic TWC Classics archive..

I think he took that down awhile ago, didn't he? :dunno:  I, too, thought it was kind of neat to look at an archive of the forums, but I think Matt said a lot of the links were broken, or that he lost most of the site.

Ha!  (Well, since this is the only topic I could find about Dr. Knabb, I'll post it here).  But I just found out that my meteorology professor for INTRO 1 this semester, Dr. Kevin Kloesel, was one of Dr. Rick Knabb's professors at Florida State in 1992!  Of course, Dr. Kloesel was bad-mouthing Dr. Knabb in some cases about when and why certain hurricane warnings were issued. :P

A big thing our professor said is that people tend to go to the models first (he said Dr. Knabb even told him that he did this), and that is NOT the ideal thing to do.  When trying to predict the path of a hurricane, it's best to look at the atmospheric conditions and how it all "comes together."

So...just a bit of trivia for you.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Isaac
« on: August 29, 2012, 03:55:29 PM »
I have to rant as I'm hearing people and the media complaining that they were unprepared as it was only a tropical storm and later a Category 1 hurricane.  Apparently, they forgot that the categories only refer to wind as described in the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, which NHC posted on their website months ago.  Every tropical storm and hurricane is dangerous, which is why NHC issues warnings for all of them!  The hurricane watches and warnings were even extended 12 hours compared to previous seasons.  There are people trapped in areas that were under mandatory evacuations for the past two days.

Maybe Isaac will finally get the point across that you don't need a major hurricane like Katrina to cause extreme problems.  Because Isaac is a large cyclone and is being blocked by an upper-level ridge to the north, it's going to spin over LA for the next 24 hours while dumping tons of rain and pushing lots of water onshore.  It will finally move northward once the ridge clears to the east, but Isaac will continue to bring major flooding issues far inland.  I'm really glad all of you in this forum are far more intelligent and know what to do with dangerous weather conditions, but I'm really shocked at how poorly the general public doesn't understand or care.

Thank you! :D  This is exactly what our meteorology professor was telling us yesterday.  A rating on the Saffir-Simpson scale almost means nothing as it just refers to wind speeds, and he said the NHC finally updated the storm to a hurricane just so people would act differently (because, as he mentioned, it's likely that people will take more precaution when they hear the word "hurricane" than when they hear the word "tropical storm.")  Yeah, at the time it was upgraded winds were probably at hurricane strength, but still.  The main problems of this thing are going to be flooding/storm surge, which can be more catastrophic than winds.

It just makes me wonder, and possibly others, if NHC should think of some other scale that assesses ALL aspects of a hurricane.  Is this even possible?

Local Forecast / Re: August 2012 Playlist

Maybe TWC feels vocal music isn't fitting for a hurricane or something? It is odd that even TWC thinks the vocals are tacky when they have many viewers so they're backing off the vocal music for now. I just find that suspicious, especially if the vocal music returns immediately after the Isaac hype dies.

That's what I was going to say! :P

I personally think it's pretty irreverent to have this up-beat "life is good" kind of vocal music when a hurricane is about to threaten lives and property.  It just isn't fitting, so they switch to instrumental music for the time being.  I also have a good feeling that vocals will return after they are out of "red mode."

(Of course, one thing that could really fix this problem would just be to use the Storm Alert music!! :poke:)

OCMs & Personalities / Re: New OCM- Bryan Norcross

In outbreaks of severe weather or tropical weather, I've noticed that Jim tends to interrupt whoever's talking (usually Dr. Greg Forbes or Dr. Postel) to ask questions that I would assume the general public wants to know.  It bothers me a little, but perhaps with so little time (and I KNOW this shouldn't be the case, but even during outbreaks TWC has to fit in a commercial break every 5-10 minutes, don't they? <_<) and with the expert talking nonstop to try to cover everything, they have to do it.

Hi everyone:

This is just a quick note reminding you all NOT to change the title of a tropical cyclone topic when you post.  From what I have seen on the topics for specific storms previously, this is what we have done in the past.  When a tropical system has been updgraded from a depression to a storm and/or a storm to a hurricane, then an admin/moderator or the topic's starter may change the name on the first post, thus affecting all the subsequent posts.  However, when a storm has been downgraded, please do NOT change the topic title (on your single post or on the first post in the topic) back to storm and/or depression.  This is so we can keep track of the strongest intensity the storm reached in its lifecycle.

I hope this made sense.  It's a little hard to explain, but since we've done this in previous years, I think most of you know what I'm talking about.  Thanks. :)

General Discussion / Re: The Olympics Hit London - 2012
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:10:21 PM »
Does anyone else think this year's Olympic coverage absolutely SUCKS? <_<  Way too many commercials and background story crap in my opinion.  (Is it embarassing that I recorded the Olympics, and was able to catch up to watching it live on TV after starting watching the recording about two hours prior?)  Plus, when it comes to gymnastics and other "rountine" sports, they are only showing the U.S. and barely focusing on any of the other countries.  It would be nice to see some routines from other countries to see what we're actually up against!  I am hoping that future Olympics will not be as bad as this.  The only thing I can surmise to explain the poor coverage is that they can't show anything live from London during primetime because of the time difference.

Hi everyone!  In case any of you were wondering why you haven't heard from me in awhile, it's because I was on vacation in Michigan; my grandparents have a lake house on a small lake about 45 minutes northwest of Kalamazoo in southwest Michigan.  It was definitely a cool, refreshing vacation, though ironically it was 101 degrees there the day I arrived.

Nice to be back and posting again, though.  Won't be too long before I leave for Norman to start my sophomore year of college.  Where does the time go?

This topic has been locked, as you all clearly have not been listening to a single thing we have been saying in The Front Porch.  (Go to that thread to see the discussion for yourself...I do not feel like repeating myself again. <_<) Jim, that post threatening to "kill" someone was completely uncalled for.  Next time behavior like this happens, warnings will be issued.  NO exceptions!

You are no longer a fan of the current network if you no longer have anything positive to contribute towards it. Sorry but thats simply how I see it. If you no longer like something you can't call yourself a fan of it. This forum was established to find like minded people who enjoyed various aspects of The Weather Channel... not to complain about how its not being run to your satisfaction. Some of you dislike the programming, OCMs, music, local forecasts (or lack thereof), etc. What do you actually like then? This board has a close community that likes to interact about personal and off topic issues. While thats fine it can't be the main reason the forum exists. If there are no longer any fans of The Weather Channel then this forum serves no purpose and should cease to continue operation or at least become archive only. You all should try to look on the bright side of the changes since there is little you can do to turn back the clock.
But, we can still talk about classic TWC in a positive matter, right? I'm not longer a fan of present TWC programming and haven't since probably 2007 (only watched for LFs after that), but that doesn't mean my interest in classic TWC will ever go away.

I, personally, think that would be fine, Mike, though Martin can certainly give his opinion on it.  Basically, it's posts such as "TWC sucks now...NBC ruined TWC...Screw you NBC...TWC's discontinuation of smooth jazz is the end of the world...The L-Bar is the death of me...blah...blah...blah" that are really getting on all of our nerves.  Sure, maybe some of TWC's latest decisions aren't the best in someone's opinion, but only talking about the bad side of changes and making these adamant, angry posts are just too much.  This forum is called TWC Today, and it's a "fan" forum.  If people can only talk about how much they hate TWC, then I really don't see this forum serving much purpose.

I, too, want to apologize to anyone who thinks we are acting like tyrants.  But I hope you can understand that these posts about how much one person thinks TWC sucks (that, let me add, often turn into arguments and heated debates) are really bringing the forum down.  And that's what the admins/mods are trying to prevent.

Reported at Downtown Dallas...holy cow!!!

83°F Blowing dust squalls/windy

Winds: NE 31 mph gusting to 52 mph

This is a result of an outflow boundary ahead of the thunderstorms moving southwest through the Metroplex.
Andy, out of curiosity, where are you getting that observation from? I can't find it at any of the Dallas area airports. area airports.

That observation came out of Dallas Love Field, which is practically next to Downtown Dallas (so the observations are usually the same).  This was according to the hourly ASOS station update by the NWS.  Check their website HERE, and you may still be able to see the observation.  They update at :53 past the hour.  If you can't see it, check the 3-day history.
Dats odd, because Wunderground updated the ob at KDAL by the time you posted to light rain!

Must have posted a little too late, then. :P  Basically, I was just trying to point out the strong wind gusts that were being reported as a result of the outflow boundary.

DFW airport reported squalls and windy at 7:53pm, as well.   Winds there gusted up to 44 mph, according to the ASOS station at the airport.

EDIT: Zach, depending on what website you checked the data from, it could have given you a different observation.  For whatever reason, some websites such as AccuWeather and Wunderground did not show these observations for the airports at that time.
