Yes, in response to Tavores' post above, blizzard warnings are now in effect for 8 states: Texas (far northern), Oklahoma (southwestern), Arkansas (northeastern), Missouri (southeastern), Tennessee (far western), Kentucky (far western), Illinois (southeastern), and Indiana (central/southwestern).

This is quite a storm!!

Merry Christmas everyone! :)

It's not every Christmas that I'm awoken by loud thunderstorms.  We're supposed to get snow later today.  Anyone who is in the path of this storm please stay safe!

A SIGNIFICANT winter storm will be dumping several inches of snow in areas of the central and southern Plains, including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri through 6Z (midnight CST) Christmas Day/the day after Christmas.  The latest GFS model run shows up to a foot of snow in parts of Arkansas and Missouri and up to 10 inches of snow in central/northwest Oklahoma.  The NAM is a little more ambitious, with up to 18 inches of snow in parts of Oklahoma!  We'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.

BUT...regardless of the total amount, it's shaping up to be a white Christmas for some of you after all!

Is anyone still alive? I have about 50 cans of goods that need consuming and there's no one to help me finish it. The assumptions about the Mayans were wrong - what a surprise.  :P

I'm just thankful to be alive after that massive wind storm we had last night.

Your Local Weather / Re: Dallas-Fort Worth weather

A MASSIVE cold front brought a line of severe thunderstorms through the Metroplex last night, December 19, 2012.  But the story everyone is talking about are the winds!  Strong sustained wind speeds and wind gusts plagued the area from late evening Wednesday, overnight, and into mid-day Thursday.  Widespread damage was reported, especially in Downtown Dallas and in East Dallas.

FOR DALLAS/FORT WORTH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT:
December 19, 2012
Highest Wind Direction/Speed: W at 41 mph
Highest Gust Direction/Speed: W at 52 mph

December 20, 2012
Highest Wind Direction/Speed: W at 39 mph
Highest Gust Direction/Speed: NW at 51 mph

Additionally, a map has been provided by The National Weather Service office in Fort Worth, TX depicting the highest wind gusts from Wednesday.  Notice the highest gust was in downtown Dallas at 66 mph!

Programming and Graphics / Re: Any Plans For New Icons Soon?
« on: December 15, 2012, 06:00:58 PM »
Unfortunately, I have lost track of all of TWC's icon sets.  I miss the days when they had one, unified set.  Now they use different ones for their on-air graphics, the SD IntelliSTAR, the HD STAR, WeatherSTAR XL (the pre-2006 set), WeatherSTAR 4000, and not to mention weather.com and the many phone/computer apps they have out there.

So I would say an icon change in the future isn't likely...  I doubt TWC will ever have a unified icon set again.

This STORM:CON is definitely a good idea and better than naming winter storms, IMO, I just worry that TWC will begin to take something useful and then overuse it.  Hopefully we won't see HURRI:CON or QUAKE:CON or something in the near future...

Yet another mass shooting - this time at a CT elementary school :( I saw on the local news about as many as 27 are dead by federal officials.

EDIT: That's just an unofficial estimate just to add.

I guess it's that time of year.

Unfortunately, as I believe someone here mentioned, the holidays can be a time of increased violence because of many factors, the primary one I would assume being depression.  I wish those who do suffer these problems would talk to counselors or someone, rather than kill innocent others, but sometimes these are things we just can't control. :(

For those of you majoring or majored in meteorology, did you take Chemistry and how useful was it for your major? My school requires 2 semesters of chem and a semester of biology which Im almost done completing once I finish my finals. I don't see much need for chem in this field besides measuring atmospheric pressure which I think is more physics oriented

I took one semester of gen Chem my freshman year of college (that's what OU requires for its met majors).  Of course, I think that's the most popular gen-ed science class, so it was HUGE (300+ students).  We have to take another semester of gen-ed science, but it doesn't have to be the second level of gen Chem (instead, it can be biology, geology, botany, etc.)

As far as Chem's usefulness: depending on how your college handles physics, you'll find that the first part of Physics 2 which deals with thermodynamics is actually somewhat of a repeat of what you learned in Chem (i.e. the ideal gas law, atmospheric pressure, etc.)  However, things such as organic chemistry or drawing Lewis structures, probably aren't so important to a met major.

Again, I was required to take at least one semester of gen Chem, and it was an easy course for me, but if you don't take it, I don't think you'll be missing out on much.  Hope that helps a little. :)

Excuse the double post, but anybody wanna take a crack at what's wrong with this? :dunno:

HINT: Think about the colors being used or not used.

Horrible.

On another note, and I'm going to try to be as little rude as possible, but are Chris and Crystal always so boring and just out of it?  I couldn't watch but like 10 seconds of the Top 5 on WCL an hour ago because they were stuttering, trying to make jokes and couldn't, and all around sounded like a mess.  What is wrong with those two, and how does TWC manage to keep them together like that on a prime time spot, nonetheless.

http://www.katu.com/news/local/Shooting-Clackamas-Town-Center-183077691.html

There was a shooting at a mall in Portland earlier this afternoon. Two people, including the gunman, were killed and several others were injured. My thoughts go out to those that were affected by the shooting, and I hope those who survived are doing okay  :(

Saw this on CNN about an hour ago.  It amazes me how or why we have people in the world who would do something like this.  I, too, hope everyone who survived this traumatic experience is doing okay. :(
