Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: February 09, 2013, 01:09:31 PM »
Looking at some tweets on a news article, it looks like a lot more people and websites are referring to this NE winter storm as "Nemo." Perhaps people have warmed up to the idea of naming winter storms, or perhaps this one was so big that they felt a name associated with it was necessary.
I bet TWC is going to be happy with their ratings this time around...
Twitter's Take: The Northeast Blizzard

Wow, TWC is going to have their hands full over the next few days as there is a severe threat and another winter storm behind "Nemo." Let's hope they give all these systems the appropriate amount of coverage.

Winter Weather / Re: Blizzard for New England 2013
« on: February 08, 2013, 12:32:18 AM »Not bad. I would expect to see 6 inches at the least.Do u know how many inches of snow central NJ will get?
According to the NWS, 6-10 inches.
Blizzard Warnings were extended to include the NYC metro area.
And why did they choose the name Nemo? Are they serious of all names to use they decide to name a blizzard after a fish?
Well according to weather.com's name list, Nemo is "a Greek boy's name meaning 'from the valley,' means 'nobody' in Latin." But yeah, honestly, when i hear about Nemo, I'm going to think about a clownfish who got taken by divers and had an adventure.
Most of TWC's names for these winter storms are okay because they're names of gods and goddesses, etc. The only weird one is "Q": the Broadway Express subway line in NYC. Really?!?

« on: February 07, 2013, 06:32:56 PM »Totals for me
18z GFS: 10-18"
18z NAM: 24-30"
12z Euro: 20-28"
12z NNM: 24-30"
15z SREF Mean: 15-20"
And yet, I don't see how people are still forecasting less than 10" here considering the Euro, which has 2ft for me, has been the best with this storm.
A future tip when forecasting:
Never rely solely on models.

41°F Fog
Some websites show reports of light snow for the area; the weather station at Norman Westheimer Airport must not be able to detect the exact type of precip.

Definitely a good game. The 49ers comeback to make it only 3-point game after being down 28-6 before the power outage was really something!
BTW, love how the power outage is weather.com's top story right now. Of course, somewhere in the article they had to mention that "Weather was not a factor."

General Discussion / Re: Computer and Hardware Chat
« on: January 28, 2013, 04:30:50 PM »Do you have any third party anti-virus/firewall software installed?
I've got Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed. I also have Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and SUPER Anti-Spyware installed. My parents talked to GeekSquad (I think) and they recommended the malwarebytes and super anti-spyware for maximum security. (If you think they could be causing the problem, however, I could try removing them.)

« on: January 28, 2013, 02:45:52 PM »I have 102 processes on mine and no issues either. What CPU and GPU does your lappy have? I'd imagine those touch screen laptops aren't as powerful as traditional notebooks.
Mike,
If I can answer your questions without looking stupid, my CPU says it's Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20 GHz.
And I know I have Intel(R) Graphics.
Again, thanks for your help guys.

If there's any great tech person on the forums that could help me, then it would be greatly appreciated...
So over the Christmas break, I bought a new ASUS 15.6" touch-screen laptop with 8GB memory and 750GB hard drive. If you read the "Slow and lagging" thread in the Site News, you may have noticed that I complained about a typing lag. Well, this is a problem that really annoys me and greatly upsets me on a computer with this much memory. (My old HP computer with only 4 GB of memory did not have this problem.) The lag seems to happen on programs such as Word, or when I'm typing e-mails on Outlook. It will happen every 30 seconds to one-minute. Strangely enough, the typing problems I had on the forums was a first-time, and at this point, one-time occurrence.
Anyway, Zach, taking heed to your advice, I opened the task manager and see that I have 81 background processes running. Is that a lot? I don't even know what half of them are but don't want to turn some off in case they are subtle programs that I need.
Bottom line is: If someone could help me either figure out what background programs I can turn off, or figure out another way to stop this horrible typing lag, then I would greatly appreciate it.

I had horrible problems with typing lag when I was writing a message just earlier. It got so bad to the point where words would appear on the screen, one by one, about five or more seconds after I typed them. Unfortunately, it's going to be hard to tell if it's my computer or the forums, as my computer seems to be dealing with typing lag as well. The problem seems to be fixed now.

Sorry for the double post, but here is SPC's highlighted threat area for Tuesday (Day 3), and then Wednesday (Day 4). A widespread area will be affected, so please monitor any dangerous weather conditions.
