OCMs & Personalities / Re: New OCM- Bryan Norcross

Why does TWC need a hurricane "expert" AND a hurricane "specialist"? What is the difference between the two? Bryan was on WC tonight giving an update, but what he did was something Dr. Knabb could easily do, too.
Not a new concept for TWC.  They had John Hope and Steve Lyons.

Two is (sometimes) better than one.  From the way it sounds, this Bryan Norcross sounds great, and Dr. Knabb is also.

I didn't realize that John Hope and Steve Lyons ever worked at the same time. I guess this isn't new, then.

I really don't understand why TWC needs two icon sets. I personally like the 2006-March 2010 ones. I know they didn't fit real well with the IS1, but they are certainly more realistic than the "cheeseballs." TWC should create or find one set that works for everything. Seeing two sets is confusing, IMO, especially on air!

They have too many shows that are not live weather reporting and updates. At least during Atmospheres which debuted 10 years ago this month, they had periodic weather updates. They have none of that now. Sometimes, they do during severe weather outbreaks, but not even always during those times. <_<
Too much money. TWC is probably already in a ton of debt from just doing severe weather coverage, not to mention getting rid of Flick and a Forecast that they expected to be a huge hit.

They...got rid of that?!?! :o Of course, a person like me who wants live weather on The Weather Channel is happy about this, but I thought ratings were high for something like this by the average viewer. It serves TWC right that showing movies on a WEATHER channel is stupid. <_<

I never thought about showing long-form and stuff being a money-making thing. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Mike.

Not to be rude, but I don't really understand this topic. How many national feeds of certain channels are there?

Thanks for posting! :thrilled: I like the graphics and animation, but it is kind of distracting in a way, especially with all the flares and stuff.

General Discussion / Re: ABC Family to Become ABCF
« on: August 09, 2010, 04:15:44 PM »
I'm not surprised at all. In fact, it makes sense. I've asked for awhile why it's called ABC Family, when judging from its programming, it clearly is not a "family" channel. Sure, they're nowhere near as bad as MTV, but having the word family in the channel name is rather misleading.

So is this going to be a channel where the "acronymn" will essentially not stand for anything.

Right now, they are airing an old version of "Surviving The Elements: Hurricane". They are talking about what would happen if a Category 4 hit New Orleans. They are having to put a Lower Third saying "This show was completed before Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast." I find that hilarious.

Why not just film a new episode? They are using the old L3RDs, which the ad covers up half of the person's name anyway.

The same thing happened from an episode of It Could Happen Tomorrow that was about the same thing it aired a few months before Katrina hit and didn't air again until years later. It was deemed the lost episode of that show.

I guess this shows you that it really could happen tomorrow!

Why is TWC using an index to describe humid weather when there's already an absolute measure for it:  the dew point?  Many media outlets, including TWC, seem to be making things dumber to the public with these simple indices instead of teaching everyone how weather works.  No wonder so many people don't understand weather! :(

Excellent way of putting it, Patrick! We need to call in Carl Parker; he actually explains things like what dew point is and, of course, how thick lightning is. And I appreciate these explanations a lot...all the better to keep watching him. :)

HUMIDICON!  Really?....  That's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while.
explain... what are you talking about?
Earlier this morning, TWC has a "Humidicon," the higher the number, the worse the humidity.  Example: 4/10 chance for humid weather.  I find it stupid.

TORCON ripoff.

Yeah, that is ridiculous. <_< Next thing you know it, we'll have "HAILCON" or "STORMCON" or "SNOWCON."

Yesterday, Mike Seidel was reporting from Memphis but at one point they showed him reporting from Memphis at night (it was dark behind him, the city lights were glowing) when it clearly shouldn't be because it's still daytime in the US.
Was this during the WUWA repeat? The sun hadn't risen yet during the original airing of WUWA.
It could've been. I wasn't really paying attention to the show.

Or it was a recording from earlier? I think there are several explanations. ;)
