On the 7 PM hour of WC, a lower third said that Earl was currently a Category 4 hurricane. But it's currently just a cat 3.

Geez, what happened to this one?

Is this storm going to be all about the "effects" (i.e. heavy rain, strong winds, etc) rather than a direct landfall situation? :dunno: Because the cones on the Projected Paths are not showing Earl to hit ANY land until it reaches Rhode Island. Are these cones too "skinny" to depict the size of the hurricane, though? If not, I don't see why NC is under a Hurricane warning.

For some reason I did not see that on commericals when I was watching PME from 3:30 to 4:00 CDT. I will go check on this next commercial break to see if it is there. Possibly it is only used like once or twice?

Very, VERY cool thing to have though.

AS OF 11 PM EDT: Earl's winds have INCREASED to 140 mph. His pressure has DROPPED to 932 mb. This is indeed a very dangerous hurricane.

Say hello to Tropical Storm Gaston. :thrilled: This storm looks like it's going to go much further south, but it's still a ways out there to determine any effect on the US.

To me, Earl's path has been shifted eastward from last night. I don't see a need for a Storm Alert, although I know the effects are going to be massive for the east coast (such as wind and rain).

As found on weather.com, the following meteorologists are doing field-reports for Hurricane Earl:
N.C. Outer Banks: Jim Cantore, Stephanie Abrams, and Jeff Morrow
Long Island, NY: Chris Warren and Mike Siedel
Cape Cod, MA: Paul Goodloe and Eric Fisher <— Your wish has been granted, Ana. :P

AS OF 11 PM EDT
Winds: 135 mph (CAT 4)
Moving: NW 15 mph
Pressure: 940 mb

Yeah, not much has changed in the past three hours.

Below is an informative graphic from weather.com:

Also, here is a graphic from TWC's twitter showing a zoom-in of Earl's projected path. I thought this was interesting.

P.S. I edited this post to add the zoomed-in projected path. The meteorologist information previously here has been moved to the "General TWC Discussion" thread.

Atlanta obviously doesn't surprise me. In fact, I'm surprised these BETA testings don't start in Atlanta. Do they want to try different US cities to avoid favoritism or the same view from the same city all the time.

This is odd...TWC has reverted back to their old tropical graphics. Could this be because Earl is closer to the US. :dunno:

How often does the NHC do hurricane advisories for a major tropical cyclone like this one? :dunno: I know for less powerful ones they do advisories at 11 AM, 5 PM, 11 PM, and 5 AM ().

Anyways, Earl's strength and projected path hasn't really changed much since earlier this evening.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Danielle
« on: August 30, 2010, 11:03:15 PM »
Patrick, what does it mean when a tropical cyclone is considered "extratropical" or "post-tropical"? :dunno: Because on one of its projected paths a few days ago, NOAA projected Danielle to become an extratropical hurricane. How is this possible?
Maybe I should bring back my thread where anyone can ask any kind of weather question to me, and I would try my best to answer them. :P

That wouldn't be a bad idea Patrick. It's nice to have a meteorologist at these forums to answer questions like these. :D

Long explanation, but it made sense and answered my question perfectly. Thanks.

Alexandra mentioned they dispatched 7 teams to the east coast... So far, I can guess: Jim, Mike Bettes, Mike Seidel, Steph, Jeff Morrow, Julie Martin... but who else would they send out? I'm predicting they may send out Chris Warren and Scott Williams too.

Well, you got six. :P My guess for the 7th would either be Al or possibly Paul...he's reported in the field recently.
