Programming and Graphics / Re: The Weather Channel - LIVE ON YOUTUBE
« on: July 02, 2014, 06:30:26 PM »
This is nothing new.  While I do not think YouTube has ever been used as a streaming service for TWC before, they have provided live online streaming during major weather events like hurricanes or major tornado outbreaks as ruhgster mentioned.

While I do like the idea of online streaming, especially when I can't have access to a TV, unfortunately I don't think they can do this permanently - as ruhgster also mentioned, cable companies would freak.

Why do I think that AccuWeather put out something like this only to add fire to the DirecTV/TWC dispute and not actually continue with it in the future? :whistling2:

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Re: Program won't start
« on: July 01, 2014, 01:34:52 PM »
Hello, and welcome to the forums.  This board (WeatherSTAR Tech Support) is meant for posting problems and/or suggestions for your WeatherSTAR that you see airing on TWC.  The TWC STAR Team then reads these problems and/or requests and makes changes as necessary.  Based on your post, it does not look like you meant to post here.  Additionally, all posts in this board must be approved by an admin or moderator before you are permitted to post.

Was your post directed at the WeatherSTAR XL Project?  If so, then I will move this topic to that board so that your questions can be answered.  Thank you, and again, welcome to the forums.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Arthur
« on: July 01, 2014, 11:12:37 AM »
11 AM EDT update shows we have TS Arthur.  Max sustained wind 40 mph.  Now could become a hurricane by 8 AM Friday based on latest forecast.  East coast needs to watch this closely.

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: June 30, 2014, 11:42:27 PM »
TWC has preempted long-form as of 8pm ET due to severe weather.
In the 11pm hour the video is full screen on the national HD feed so I'm guessing the is extra coverage in place of long form shows.
From the way I saw it, TWC planned to go to Catching Hell but pre-empted at the last second. I have no problem with showing more weather,  but they really need to use the squeezeback like normal for these situations. The translucent LDL on-screen makes it look kind of cluttered and it can at times obscure graphics (such as chyrons).

TWC has a lot to talk about.  Not only is there severe weather, there's also a new Tropical Depression in the Atlantic.  Glad to decided to pre-empt.  Also it looks like locals have been discontinued at this point in time.

Hurricane Central / Hurricane Arthur

The Atlantic is alive!  Our first tropical depression has formed.  Based on the projected path, the system could become a Tropical Storm very soon and would be named Arthur.  The system may also skim the East Coast, so we'll have to watch out for this over the next few days.

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:20:46 PM »

I was wondering if there are any noticeable differences between the IS2 and IS2Jr since the graphics update. From what I can see, I can no longer tell the two apart at all.
I think the only noticeable difference is the wasted space on the right during the LF on the IS2. As far as graphics alone, you wouldn't notice
Also, the only difference between the IS, IS2HD, and the IS2Jr. is that the IS still has Allen Jackson's voice-over as it was used previously in versions 1-2. Allen Jackson also previously did the narrations on the XL. Jim Cantore does the voice-overs for the IS2HD and the IS2Jr.

Yes, except for the fact that the IS2 Jr. is not HD, there is no difference between the IS2 and IS2 Jr.

However, subtle differences exist between the IS2/IS2 Jr. and IS. These include:
- The IS2 and IS Jr scroll through numbers and letters on the CC and summary page while the IS does not.
- On the radar, the IS shows a time stamp and bar and is able to distinguish between precip types while the IS2 and IS Jr cannot.
- Difference in animation on the Daypart.  The IS is smooth while the IS2 and IS2 Jr. are more abrupt.
- Jim Cantore narration on the IS2 and IS2 Jr. and Allen Jackson narration on the IS (mentioned above).
- At the bottom where it shows what segments are coming up and how much time is left on one, a white bar fills a grey bar on the IS2 and IS2 Jr, while on the IS the white bar un-fills the grey bar.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Dave Schwartz Returns
« on: June 24, 2014, 12:29:41 AM »
Dave seemed to have quickly adapted to the dull and boring personalities that TWC OCM's have these days. :(

I haven't been able to watch him, but is this really true?  Has he lost the "my friend" quirky personality?  I was afraid this would happen. :(  I don't know what it is, but I feel like most if not all TWC OCMs are just so serious now (excluding Abrams and Roker).  Now I know this conversation has been tossed around several times and obviously professionalism is important, but I feel like the OCMs could have a little more fun at times.  Even Jim seems so much more serious now.

Programming and Graphics / Re: New TWC show: Fat Guys in the Woods

Discussion on this new show, "Fat Guys in the Woods," was already ongoing in General TWC Discussion, so I took the posts relating to the show from over there and put them in this topic.  All discussion about this new long-form show should be kept here.  Thank you.

Apparently my STAR predicts the sun won't be rising tomorrow.  :P

The sun better rise tomorrow - it's the summer solstice, the longest day of the year! :hammer:

No matter how much we all beg and plead and get mad at TWC, these things are going to keep happening.  I'm not crazy about the name, but hey, at least it looks like it will have something to do with weather. :P

Plus, I don't think it would serve a major cable or satellite company well if they drop TWC permanently.  I think DirecTV probably threw in the towel and came to a compromise.  While some would disagree, I feel the ratio of people who wanted TWC on DirecTV and who didn't was 1 to 1.

Really, TWC?   These graphics scare me more than Friday the 13th!

Weather Channel SD and HD LOT8s with Friday the 13th graphics

WHY in the :censored: world does TWC consider Friday the 13th a holiday?!  It's not!  It was even on their "Holiday countdown" wheel.  Ugh.

here is the link to the updated IS2 Jr graphics http://youtu.be/0UyxUme-UlQ

It looks better than the Intellistar.

It appears the IS Jr. is using the same transitions as the IS2, instead of the IS.  Does the mean the analog signal is gone, too, or are the XLs and 4000s still around?

New IS2 Flavor that's been airing since 5:28pm

IntelliStar II: New Flavor 6/11/14

New Bedford IS2: Weird flavor

Looks like it's an error. Although the radar showing twice would be nice!

Yeah, especially in the first video, that thing seems to be glitching like crazy.  IF this is a new flavor, though, I don't like it.  Why put the time and welcome screen at the end, and why show the radar twice?  The radar is already shown again on the summary page.  Use the extra time for another screen.  Maybe this is something they're experimenting with, who knows.

Wow, a ton of broken promises from TWC regarding the LOT8s.  Analog signal with legacy STARs remains, no graphics update to the IS Jr, and no music changes.  Since the sources where you all got this information seem to be reasonable, this either means that TWC couldn't care less about this aspect of their station anymore, or that they're giving BS answers to their viewers about date changes, future plans, etc.
