TWC is really hyping this invest and giving a projected path BEFORE it has even become anything (something I don't recall happening before). I'm just wondering if it's going to be much of a threat at all because it's got a lot of land to pass over in the Caribbean before it hits the U.S. I guess rain may be the #1 concern with this storm.

There's an Invest 99L which could be Katia if 98L becomes Jose and Irene 97L. I wish they could have came up with a better replacement for Katrina, it's too close to being the same name as that, the same for Rita whose replacement is "Rina".

Were also one name ahead of the Eastern Pacific currently.

My thoughts exactly... :whistling2:

Note that Don, Katia, Rina, Sean, and Whitney are all new names for this season as replacements for the hurricanes of the devastating 2005 hurricane season.

OK wow, a couple of these names are way too similar to the devastating storm names they are replacing.

Katia / Katrina

Rina / Rita

Apologize for bumping, but are these new tropical graphics for weather.com and possibly on-air? Haven't seen these with other storms earlier this season...the graphics have been the ones from last year.

Interesting camera shot they did at the beginning of WCL where they showed from a distance Crystal and Chris standing in front of the big desk from the left side and then showed Chris walking over to the new green screen from that same left corner. I'm not sure if that was a mistake or not, but I know it's a camera shot they don't do often.

It's always exciting to see new/different camera shots. I'm guessing this didn't have to be a mistake.

It's called Hanzel.

Hanzel is the font used for the numbers on the metro maps. ;)

TWC needs to be consistent with its icons! :club: Maybe these were "default" with the program or something, but seeing too many different types of icons can be confusing I think.

Local Forecast / Re: IntelliStar Changes

now that Getaway is gone TWC should create a page called Flight Status for local airports in the Region

Airports in my area are

TF Green Int'l Airport - Providence, RI

Logan Int'l - Boston, MA

Manchester-Boston Arpt - Manchester, NH

and it would display if there is Delays on arrival and departures in those locations.

The Intellistar LDL used to have that in a right-to-left scroll.  I'm not sure if TWC would even consider making it a product in the local forecast, though, especially considering it already features on Weatherscan.

Since a lot of people probably don't get WeatherScan, I think an airport delays screen would be excellent for the IS. Heck, on videos I watched, it was supposed to be a product on the IS2. :club:

General Discussion / Re: NWS website redesign

That is an excellent question. I gathered from the link posted that the the forecasts were part of the skin. Patrick was explaining to me how its up to the regional weather offices. They really need to do something with those. The lack of continuity between how each office stores data is horrible. My office has random folders and names for everything. It's very hard to lookup old information

Definitely!!! The forecast/current conditions are the same, but you get into real trouble when you want to look at past weather, etc. It can be real tough if you're used to your own office's page.

Overall, I am indifferent on this new design. It's not great or terrible. The worst part of the whole thing is going to be getting used to the new feel.

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion
« on: August 15, 2011, 06:22:11 PM »
In the early years, when the wet snow is expected during the "Text-based Local Forecast", Vocal Local used to read that text that's used for wet snow, but he doesn't read that text anymore. For example "1 to 3 inches of wet snow expected".
Yeah, I've noticed several phrases that the IS doesn't narrate anymore. I've pointed these issues out to the STAR team in the past several years, but never got a response.

While I wouldn't have a good explanation, it may be possible that they're trying to cut down on some of the narration. I have no idea why; the only reason I know narration is limited is when there is a lot to be read in very little time.

That doesn't sound like an error. Sometimes the Vocal Local will be a tad dirrerent from the text, but that is on purpose.
It wasn't always like that. I first noticed issues like this happening in early 2007.

When I used to have an ISTAR and on current ones I've seen, extremely long text forecasts (usually for thunderstorms or winter storms) are not read word-for-word. And in some cases, the wording is changed a little to be more concise.

But in the instance above, the text and narration don't necessarily go together properly, so this could be an error...IDK.

There's many questions for this tragic incident. I am a little confused, as I heard on the news that a severe thunderstorm warning was issued 10 minutes prior to the stage collapse but that some people (don't know if it was meteorologists or maybe the concert crew) weren't expecting the storm for another 20 minutes. As soon as the warning was issued, the people should have evacuated. Actually, as Patrick said, the concert should have been cancelled as a severe thunderstorm watch was issued in plenty of time.

Bottom line is, I hope no one even thinks twice about blaming the meteorologists for this tragic event, because they predicted it and issued a warning prior to the storm's arrival. What more do people need? :club:

How many times is TWC going to show the Stage Collapsing in Indiana?  they must be that desperate for viewership

How many times are they showing it? :dunno: This is definitely a top story, so they should show it, although I'm sure plenty of people have already seen it on weather.com and YouTube.
