Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Re: Suggestion: Revival Rule
« on: August 28, 2011, 06:00:36 PM »
Looks like the guest posting feature may have to be disabled, if it is getting abused like this. :hmm:

On the note of bumping old topics, members and guests here need to realize that 2+ year-old topics should probably not be revived. Creating a new topic seems like the best idea, IMO, unless that will make for too many repeated topics and clutter the forums. Also, the board does give a notice for topics that haven't been posted in for over 120 days (which is four months). I know this won't stop spammers, but it's an important message.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Jose
« on: August 28, 2011, 12:38:58 PM »
My question is: how on God's green earth did Jose form out of a system that NHC had consistently said had a near 0% chance of development? This storm doesn't deserve to be named at all, in my opinion.

This isn't remnants of (former) TD ten reforming, is it? :dunno:

And although this storm won't affect the U.S., I guess Bermuda may get a little out of it.

I don't think Bill would like it if someone posted a download elsewhere.
I totally understand THAT - but my IP was blocked by mistake.
So ask him to unblock it. :dunno:
I'm just going to bring my laptop to McDonald's and use their free wifi to get it.

Well, that's certainly one way to do it. :P

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Irene

Although effects from Irene are certainly spanning over a wide range of land, Irene took a directly north track through the overnight hours, making the center now even closer to the shore.

Even though we were due to have one hit the United States sooner or later, I hope you all realize how much worse this situation could have been.  What if this had occurred one week later during Labor Day weekend when a lot of people would be out traveling?  What if it was still a Category 3 hurricane or higher heading northward along the coast?  We've really dodged a major bullet here when you think about it.

That's for sure. I hate to say this situation of Irene now is a "good" one (because a hurricane hitting the US is obviously not), but we were originally expecting a CAT 3 to hit. I really am starting to question how bad this will be. Are people going overboard in talking about the possible effects, or not? :dunno:

Did anybody see those IDIOTS that drove up waving on air during Eric's live shot? He got really pissed off about that saying how stupid they were being for being out in the storm.

Is that shot posted on weather.com? One segment of him reporting is on weather.com, and it makes me just as mad as he is to see these idiots driving around during the storm, boarding up during the storm, and supposedly sitting outside watching the storm?!?! Seriously, how stupid can some people be?

I was able to record it, that's how I saw it. Not even an hour ago he said how disheartened he is to see so much traffic.

EDIT: I admire Eric keeping his composure and professionalism on air, he just had more idiots dancing and streaking around in the storm. :itsok:

What the :censored: :censored: was the deal with the live shot of some local news guy in RI and all the kids sitting on a wall behind him? Did anyone else see it; think it was around 1 PM ET.

Although they weren't in the middle of a storm, it's so darn distracting to see all the people who want their 10 seconds of fame, waving, and doing whatnot. <_<

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion
« on: August 27, 2011, 02:15:12 PM »
Now that I think about it... since they haven't been airing an actual LF during the event but one every 30min the other day... is Storm Alert music discontinued?

I think it's safe to say that the "Storm Alert" as we once knew it is discontinued, therefore the music probably doesn't exist anymore either. The only way to really know for sure is to have a CAT 3 or above hit the U.S. if TWC is really picky about when they want to activate it, but the extended coverage and amount of "red" we are seeing now is basically "Storm Alert," just without the name and special LF music.

At least their wasn't a streaker like there was when Jorma Duran did a live shot a few years ago.

And as far as the commercials, I don't think TWC will ever cut them down. It would be nice to go straight from live coverage to the traditional LF, but I think the commercials have to stay. <_<

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion
« on: August 27, 2011, 01:50:43 AM »
I'm scared that this is yet another step in the "experimentation" of replacing the local forecast with the L-bar on a more permanent basis.  More time for commercials and longform that way.

Oh gosh, I certainly hope not. In a video about LOT8s and its transition to HD created a few years ago on TWC MediaKit, Cantore stated that the LOT8s was the #1 reason why people tune to The Weather Channel. Sure the squeezeback gives some local info but not all of it. If the average viewer no longer cares about getting a local forecast, then TWC really shouldn't even exist anymore.

Plus, the STAR team just came out with a sparkling, new IS2. I don't think this will happen. ;)

So...um...we are going full steam with no dedicated locals (just squeezebacks)?

Sadly that seems to be the case, looks like I'll have to watch Weatherscan when Irene comes up the coast.

It's better than having no locals at all. ;) I'm pretty sure TWC is in "full-alert" mode now, even though they're not putting the name "Storm Alert" with it.

On another note...here's the updated list with the field reporters and their locations.

Long Island, NY - Al Roker and Stephanie Abrams (Do they HAVE to be together ALL THE TIME??? <_<)
New York City - Jim Cantore
Nags Head, NC - Mike Seidel
New Jersey - Adam Berg
Virginia Beach - Eric Fisher
Atlantic Beach, NC - Jeff Morrow

Was Irene affecting this one in any way?

I can't believe NY has experienced its first-ever mandatory evacuations! :o To have the "city that never sleeps" come to a halt, especially for the weekend, must be quite something.

Wow, Irene is continuing on a long path (although post-tropical). It's not possible that it can re-form by Greenland, can it? :P

11 AM Advisory - Irene now a CAT 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. Looks like the strength level will continue to drop before Irene makes a CAT 1 landfall east of NYC.
