Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Katia
« on: September 01, 2011, 12:53:39 AM »
The track forecast of Katia isn't surprising me. Storms that form far out have a tendency to curve off. :<

She'll probably strengthen quite a bit, but I see no real threat atm.

Yeah, what's the deal with the storms curving to the north again? I'm not really an expert, but I thought this wasn't supposed to happen as much this year because of shifts in weather patterns. :dunno:

Found this on TVnewser earlier about The Weather Channel ratings for Hurricane Irene. Thought I'd share.

Another reason why TWC is "The Hurricane Authority." As much as we hate it, I will admit that they do a good job of keeping their ratings high by having long-form during low-weather times and expanded, continuing coverage during major weather events, like Irene.

BTW, how is the 4000 older than the Jr? The Jr. doesn't have maps and looks more primitive than the 4000.

Btw, how is "Katia" pronounced? I've been pronouncing it as Ka-tee-ya.

It's a Russian name (Катя), and the pronunciation is a little tricky for English speakers.  KAT-ya, with "ya" pronounced as one sound, not a diphthong.

Thanks for the clarification. At least this way, it doesn't sound too much like "Katrina." ;)

Interesting P.O.V on TWC's Hurricane Irene Coverage Saturday.

Why Did I Watch Fourteen Hours Of The Weather Channel? I'm Not Sure.

That video of the people acting so disrespectful to Eric pisses me off to the highest extreme. :furious: Yes, I understand people desperately want their fame on TV, but I had no idea there was yet another streaker (clearly seen this time), plus other jerks who walked in front of Eric while he was doing his live shots! I don't care how famous people want to be, that was beyond unacceptable. I'm very distrubed to see such jerks. <_<

But alas, this is what our society today is like...

My opinion is that the Jr. and the 4000 should be retired... long ago.  The XL should certainly be entering retirement now.  If cable companies don't want to upgrade to current equipment, at least their viewers now have a good-looking national local forecast and LDL to look at instead of, say, a looping list of 20 cities and their forecasts for the next 24 hours.

I agree with you. I don't know how much more expensive the IS is compared to the Jr., 4000, or XL, but I also feel that these older STARS should be retired. With newer technological advancements, the use of the old STARS that do not have such capability will lead to a lack of local weather information, as in this situation.

I'm guessing upgrading STARS probably takes work, time, and is expensive as stated above, but to bring about uniformity, I think the older STARS should be retired, leaving us with the just the IS and IS2.

Well, although it's got a ways ago, it's looking good so far that future Katia will not become another Katrina. This looks like another year, though, with quite a bit of fish storms.

Yes, I saw Alex on CNN the other day giving the latest information on Hurricane Irene. Nice to see her on-air again with her new job. :)

Looks like Irene is going to bring some rain to Greeland or Iceland. Don't know why the NHC has the projected path going out that far, since the system is already post-tropical.

As far as the names go, this hurricane season is pretty much caught up with the 2005 season. The sixth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall (in Louisiana) is tomorrow, and we may have our "K" storm forming very soon.

Greek alphabet again, anyone? :P

For all of you missing the storm alert theme, I recorded this exactly six years ago today!

Think there could have been any more statements on the Weather Bulletin? :P Wonder why they showed a blank page, though.

Since the LFs aren't cueing because of Irene, does this mean the SA music is gone for good then?

This has been asked several times. We are not 100% sure, because TWC has not gone into a true "Storm Alert" mode since 2008. If a CAT 3 or higher hits the U.S. and they don't use the music, we'll know for sure. ;)

As Gary had instructed me in the past when I was first learning the forums, if you can provide good or new information that is absolutely relevant to the old topic, then it's okay to bump it.  If that is not the case, then start a new topic.

...which is what people should take into account. It's common sense, really, and that's how I've always judged bumping old topics. Unfortunately, this won't stop spammers, but this is obviously a good guideline for our members here.

Tropical Storm Irene has sustained winds of 50 mph as of 5 PM EDT. Of course, TWC is showing only the worst impacts that this storm caused, but overall a TS in NYC was certainly not as bad as a MAJOR hurricane.
