Also of note: Katia is the 7th named storm to form in August. Looking back at records, there are very few seasons - if any - that produced that many storms in August.

Irene has become post-tropical and will no longer be followed by the National Hurricane Center. She will still cause gusty winds across parts of the Northeast through Monday, however.

Well, college has already started here, and so far, things are fine. I'm thoroughly enjoying my classes, and have joined the university's weather broadcast team. We make our first forecast on Monday.

Labor Day wise, no big plans, sadly. Probably will go flying for a large chunk of the day.

The remnants of TD 10 are marked as a separate invest well to the south and east, so I don't know where Jose came from.

My question is: how on God's green earth did Jose form out of a system that NHC had consistently said had a near 0% chance of development? This storm doesn't deserve to be named at all, in my opinion.

Irene has weakened again as of the 5 PM advisory. Winds are 80 mph, as the hurricane continues its path to the NNE at about 13 mph. The NHC stated that in high-rise areas, wind speeds are increased by 20% upwards of 30 floors, and up to 30% or higher at 80-100 floors.

Assuming that Irene arrives in New York as expected (strong tropical storm), here are the wind speed forecasts by altitude.

Ground speed: 70 mph.
30 floors up: 84 mph.
80-100 floors: 91 mph or higher.
