In an effort to preserve office coordination, we have split the country into various regions, with certain offices acting as headquarters for each reason. It's almost identical to the Regional Headquarters of the NWS.

Attached is a map of the regions. The list of open offices and the head offices of each region are listed below.

New England Region
No offices open at this time.
Head Office: New York, NY

Southern Region
Atlanta, GA
Charleston, SC
Head Office: Dallas, TX

Midwest Region
Grand Forks, ND
Head Office: Chicago, IL

Western Region
Seattle, WA
Head Office: Denver, CO

General Weather Chat / Re: What's the weather in your area?

I'd do anything to get some warm weather up here, as right now, the temperatures are below average. Currently, about 30 degrees with cloudy skies and breezy conditions. Wind chill is 20 degrees. Light dusting of snow on the ground, but more is on the way.

Sadly, it only gets colder from here. Saturday, a snowstorm is supposed to hit us, and our highs will struggle to get above 20 degrees. Give me those 70s! :P

Double post. A few more local offices are in the works here. Our Seattle office is now operational, and a Concord Massachusetts office may also be in the works. We'll release links as we can.

Now it looks like there will be no NBA season this year.  :cry3:

IMO they should've cancelled the season at the end of last year, greedy players and greedy owners =

Although it is quite sad, I think it serves as a good warning to any other sport organizations that may try the same move in the future.

For anyone interested in the weather for our friends to the north, The Weather Center will be opening up a Canadian weather office, covering all provinces. A link to the page will be provided shortly.

Oh, please. Come join me and then you can talk about cold.  :bleh: Current temperature this morning in Grand Forks was 20 degrees, and our highs will only be in the 30s by early next week. Current temp right now is 26, with a broken cloud ceiling.

Unless you're in Bermuda...how is that even possible? Sean is nowhere near Bay Shore.

Another change in winter weather advisories. Don't know if this is with our office or if it's a change across all offices, but the Wind Chill Warning has been replaced with the Extreme Cold Warning. An explanation of this change from NWS Grand Forks:

Quote
Some information concerning the use of Extreme Cold Warnings and Wind Chills.... The Wind Chills formula was modified in 2001 based ibn research from Canadian and U.S. researchers on the affect of cold on the human body. These are the wind chills used today. Thus cannot compare wind chills today to those of pre-2001 as they are on totally different scales. Until a couple of years ago, NWS used 10 mph wind speed as the cutoff on when to issue wind chills advisories or warnings. The last two years it was reduced to 5 mph. Problem is what about the times when 3-4 mph wind at -28F produces a wind chill near -40F. Using a 5 mph rule....no adv/warning is issued.

Thus the new Extreme Cold Warning product came into play which takes into account both extreme wind chills (when there is wind) and times when there is extremely low temperature and no wind. Both are dangerous when -35F or below. NWS offices in our area will be issuing these warnings for -35F wind chills (regardless of wind) or if calm when the actual temp is -35F or lower. The forecaster can issue the warning for -30F to -34F at his/her discretion.

Looks like Sean has a chance to become a hurricane before it dies, per the latest advisory.

Ever had a forecast for your area go bad?

For example, today in Grand Forks, they were calling for breezy conditions and mostly sunny skies...but this afternoon skies turned quickly overcast and we've had snow showers on and off all day.

The NWS has been spamming my wall with posts about this "megastorm" brewing in the Bering Sea. Can anybody explain the significance of this system to me, or at least explain what is going on?
