General Discussion / Re: President Obama Threatening to cut NWS budgets
« on: February 17, 2012, 03:08:19 AM »
A petition was made yesterday on whitehouse.gov to remove NWS from the budget cuts. 25,000 signatures are needed by March 16th. If you want your opinion heard, then sign this and get everyone else you know to sign it as well. The White House takes these things seriously, so the faster we get the signatures, the better.

Sigh. When is Congress going to learn to cut useless crap and not the important stuff?

Apparently Obama doesn't quite understand how significant of a role NWS played last year. Their budget for 2011 was $1.032 billion that year. The total cost of natural disasters that year was well over 20 billion dollars. If NWS wasn't around for those, then the cost of those disasters would significantly increase. That's not even taking into account the exponential increase in lives lost. Cutting the computer technology to get warnings out is asinine.

Kia Ora, bros! (Maori for "Hello, My Good Friends")

Hope everyone is doing well. I certainly am, as I just finished walking 34 miles in 3 days. My feet are killing me, but I'm happy. I'm writing more about it in the blog, which is further back in this thread. Feel free to read it if you want; I've got some good pictures to show.

I heard about the snowstorm a while ago; I'm jealous. :P It's been in the 70s, windy, and sunny every day here in Milford Sound, which is quite odd, seeing how this place gets rain about 200 days a year. Average yearly rainfall stands around 360 inches.

You'll hear from me again in about a week. Hope the rest of your week goes well! :D

Valentine's Day was the day I called "crawl into a corner and cry day." Kidding, obviously. :P

But no, I've never much cared for it. I agree with Matt on this one.

Fluky or not, you've gotta admit the intentional grounding call on Tom Brady in the 1st quarter was a good call. A quick 2 points for New York. :P

General Discussion / Re: How many weather radios do you own?
« on: February 05, 2012, 11:13:23 PM »
Only one, but it covers radios across all 50 states. There's an iPhone app out that pushes alerts to you and broadcasts radio feeds (assuming there is an internet connection).

No dice for Tom Brady and the Patriots. The Giants win the Super Bowl, 21-17.

FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...

A NON-TROPICAL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM INTERACTING WITH AN UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH IS PRODUCING WIDESPREAD CLOUDINESS...SHOWERS...AND SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS MUCH OF WESTERN AND CENTRAL CUBA...THE LOWER
FLORIDA KEYS...AND ADJACENT WATERS OF THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN
SEA...SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO...AND THE FLORIDA STRAITS. THE
LOW IS CENTERED JUST WEST OF THE WESTERN TIP OF CUBA...AND A
SURFACE CIRCULATION CENTER IS GRADUALLY BECOMING BETTER DEFINED.
SHOWER ACTIVITY HAS BEEN SLOWLY INCREASING AND HAS BECOME BETTER
ORGANIZED TODAY...AND IF THIS DEVELOPMENT TREND CONTINUES...THEN A
SUBTROPICAL DEPRESSION OR A SUBTROPICAL STORM COULD FORM DURING THE
NEXT DAY OR SO BEFORE THE DISTURBANCE MERGES WITH A COLD FRONT.
THIS SYSTEM HAS A MEDIUM CHANCE...30 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A
SUBTROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS AS IT MOVES SLOWLY
NORTH-NORTHEASTWARD TONIGHT AND MONDAY MORNING...BEFORE TURNING
NORTHEASTWARD AT 10 TO 15 MPH TOWARD SOUTH FLORIDA AND THE FLORIDA
KEYS BY MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. REGARDLESS OF DEVELOPMENT...
THIS SYSTEM WILL LIKELY BRING LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL AND STRONG
GUSTY WINDS TO PORTIONS OF THE FLORIDA KEYS AND SOUTH FLORIDA OVER
THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS SYSTEM CAN
BE FOUND IN OFFSHORE WATERS FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE...UNDER AWIPS HEADER MIAOFFNT3 AND WMO HEADER FZNT24
KNHC...AND ALSO IN PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE. ADDITIONAL SPECIAL TROPICAL WEATHER
OUTLOOKS WILL BE ISSUED AS NEEDED.

If it becomes a subtropical storm, it will be named Alberto.
