Winter Weather / Re: Winter Storm Thread: 2011-12 Season
« on: March 13, 2012, 09:28:42 PM »
I love the cold, and even though I wasn't in North Dakota to see their winter, I would have loved to. That state broke some record highs just the other day - that being said, the highs were only in the 40s and 50s.

The United States has been very warm, Europe has been quite cold, and Oceania has been cooler than average. I honestly don't have a clue what's going on, but I'm sure we can all agree this year has been just downright strange weather-wise.

Seems like weird weather is occurring all over the globe. Did a little research, and found out that a massive wind storm witnessed in Wellington, New Zealand was in response to a bombing low off the East Coast. Pressure dropped nearly 30 mb in about 20 hours. Wind gusts got up to 70 mph, with an isolated report of 85 mph.

Also, seems this summer has been very cool. Temperatures here have been lower than normal for much of the season...just as temperatures in much of the United States have been above average. At least it's raining every other day. :P

I've been looking at high risk zones historically throughout the last 10-15 years, and it seems like the most dangerous weather outbreaks are starting to occur more and more east of the Mississippi. Maybe I'm crazy to suggest this...but could Tornado Alley be shifting eastward?

I had a bad feeling this would be a high risk situation. My thoughts and prayers to everyone in the line of severe weather. Please, stay safe.

Well, you know how people like to scream about their privacy being invaded. I know quite a few friends who are leaving Youtube because they find it too "intrusive."

As if they haven't collected enough information on us already. I guess the basic rule is, if you don't want to be tracked, don't be logged in.

March 2nd is going to be a very interesting day for the same regions affected yesterday: there is a moderate risk out stretching from Alabama into the Ohio Valley, with a huge 45% severe probability. Very strong wind events and significant and long-tracked tornadoes could be the name of the game. This is certainly a system to keep an eye on.

Kaikoura, New Zealand: 52 with Cloudy and Breezy conditions. Winds 37 gusts to 50. My kayak trip on the Pacific got cancelled because of the winds.

General Discussion / Re: Economy Tracker

A good reason why the stock market is never a good true indicator of a country's economy: the Dow today closed up above 13,000. The last time the Dow was at that level, our jobless rate was nearly half of what it is now.

Memphis is in the 10% tornado risk today. Looks like this low bringing heavy snow to the Dakotas and Minnesota in the next few days is gonna have a pretty impressive cold front with it. Looks like a decent tornado risk, and an even better strong wind risk.

Your Local Weather / Re: Grand Forks Weather

It's a busy day up in Grand Forks. A Winter Storm Warning and a Blizzard Watch are currently in effect. There is a very real possibility that the city could be buried under 18 inches of the white stuff by Wednesday night.

Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand: 63 degrees with a Severe Thunderstorm. Metservice had warnings out on this line of storms about an hour ago. Estimated rainfall is about 2 inches in an hour an a half. Another 2-3 inches is expected tomorrow. Metservice New Zealand's T-Storm outlook is below. Kinda basic when you forecast an area the size of Colorado.

And yes, there is a glacier nearby. In a temperate rainforest.  :bleh: Explains the rain, at least.

General Discussion / Re: President Obama Threatening to cut NWS budgets
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:05:25 PM »
Please tell me that "lie" wasn't a surprise to you. He's a politician, for god's sake. The only thing they're good at is saying one thing and then making a complete 180 and saying the other. Obama has a ton examples of this, Mitt Romney has a ton more.

Obama needs, as Tavores said, to consider what cuts would benefit the country rather than harm it. NWS is a very tiny dent in the amount of money the government spends, compared to other programs. Speaking of which, SS is already going to break our back within the next 20 years, so why don't we get rid of that? Let's get rid of welfare while we're at it. I, for one, do not like the idea of my money going to someone sucking in paychecks from the government while doing little or no work! Of course, so many more Americans think they are entitled to everything that it isn't gonna happen.  <_<
