It looks like Mother Nature is gearing up for another severe weather session on Saturday across the northern Mississippi Valley into Iowa and Missouri as a cut-off low swings northeastward into the Midwest. Looks like damaging winds and possibly a few tornadoes will be the main threats.

Well, for one, we don't know the entire story, so until we do, it isn't very smart to be pointing fingers right now.

Well, snow turned back to rain this afternoon as the temperature climbed into the upper 30s, so snow totals were a lot less than forecast. Regardless, the recording of 3.5 inches this afternoon on campus is one of the earliest 1 inch or greater accumulations in the history of the city.

The more I think about it they probably should test this only on blizzards/icestorms first if there any this winter and see how that goes before broadening it out to overall winter storms.

Again, the idea of naming Winter Storms overall is not that bad. There are NWS offices (NWS Buffalo) and local news stations (I've heard Minneapolis and parts of CT do this) that have been doing this for years, the thing is they're local, the key word here. What they're planning to do is certainly going to be much more challenging since they're focusing on the entire regions of the nation.

Yep...the locals here have been naming winter storms since 1997.

1. DISTURBED ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH A LARGE LOW
PRESSURE SYSTEM LOCATED ABOUT 950 MILES WEST OF ALASKA
CONTINUES TO GRADUALLY BECOME BETTER ORGANIZED.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE FORECAST TO REMAIN CONDUCIVE FOR
DEVELOPMENT...AND THIS DISTURBANCE COULD BECOME A WINTER STORM
LATER TONIGHT OR ON WEDNESDAY. THIS SYSTEM HAS A HIGH
CHANCE...80 PERCENT...OF BECOMING WINTER STORM ATHENA DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS AS IT MOVES NORTHEASTWARD AT 10 TO 15 MPH.

ELSEWHERE...WINTER STORM FORMATION IS NOT EXPECTED DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS.

NOTE: This is a joke, I made it up given TWC's latest "buzzing" news.
