Winter Weather / Re: Possible Winter Storm in the south Sunday and Monday
« on: January 09, 2011, 11:44:52 PM »
Snowfall beginning in Chattanooga. School cancelled.  And, amazingly, 7-9 inches of snow anticipated in the next 18 hours or so, with a foot or more in the mountains. This is a stunning storm.

Current Snow Totals:
- Downtown Atlanta: 4.3 inches, 1-3 more anticipated. Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour.
- Chattanooga: 0.3 inches, 7-9 anticipated. Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour.
- Huntsville, AL: 2.1 inches, 3-5 expected. Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour.
- Tupelo, MS: 6.1 inches, 2-3 more anticipated. Snowfall rates just under 1 inch per hour.

Heavy snow bands just South of Chattanooga, but the humidity is too low to have any snow hit the ground. This sucks big time, because as of now, school is still on.

Emulator Videos / Re: My PPT Emulator of the Intellistar 2
« on: January 09, 2011, 06:21:35 PM »
I'm assuming this is your first try at emulating the Intellistar 2, and it looks good for your first attempt. I'd like to give you a few suggestions on how to improve it; these suggestions come from what I did with my emulator.

This list is a little long, so hold in there.
- The key code for the degree symbol is Alt 0176. If you can't do that, PPT 2007, which I assume is what you're using, has the degree symbol.
- If you want to animate your radar, go to your regions 1800 Doppler and animate it. Save every frame that comes up (there should be 5), and number them in order. Then, put all the images on top of each other in the powerpoint, and set the animations so they alternate, like a radar would. .4 seconds between images should do the trick.
- With the Hourly Forecast tab, I would make all of that stuff come in all at once, and instead of peeking in, make it fade with a speed of .2 seconds.
- The 36-hour forecast looks really good. Don't change it.
- For Air Quality, I'd visit www.airnow.gov for current values and levels. It's a bit more accurate than the Weather Channel's map.
- With the 4-Day Forecast, once again, I'd get everything to fade in at once.

If you'd like, I can send you a few things from my PPT for you to use. Overall, the presentation looks good. None of the suggestions I made are necessary, and I'm not telling you to use them. I just gave them to help further improve your presentation.

Chattanooga is supposed to get about 2-4 inches of snow tonight, 2-4 inches tomorrow, and top the evening off with freezing rain. For the public schools, that's good enough to shut down school for two days. For a private school like mine...I'll be lucky to get tomorrow off.

Well, here it is.

Intellistar 2 Emulator

A few things to note:
- The standard copyright disclaimer, the song is "Eminence Front" by The Who, and the song writes are owned by The Who, WMG, and UMG.
- Once again, title bars belong to wxgatlin.
- The flavor idea came from Mike M, who started the "Your Custom Intellistar Flavor" thread. This is his :08/:38 2-minute flavor.
- Yes, I know the video goes for 2:30. The reason is that there are so many animations going on at once. The local radar constantly running in the corner, 9 or 10 gifs working at once, and the transitioning data on the left side of the screen. I'm surprised the emulator doesn't crash with everything that's going on.
- Despite the fact that there is a Winter Storm Watch in effect, there is no advisory slide. That's coming in Version 1.1.

Since my emulations are now strictly Intellistar 2, the thread has been appropriately renamed.

Well, it's finished. After god knows how long it took to make it, the presentation is done. A video will follow shortly. The public download will also soon be available, via PM. I'll let you know when its released.

The National Weather Service is calling for 3-6 inches in Chattanooga, with about a foot or more on higher elevations. Of course, we're still 48 hours out on that, so things may change. Lows are supposed to be treacherous throughout the week, though. One model (can't remember) called for lows of 10 in Chattanooga on Thursday, and a low of 1 in Knoxville. GEEZUS!

Pressure models for Jan. 7-8:

Along with the snow, arctic air is supposed to push southward, bringing a sad end to the surprisingly pleasant temperatures we have been witnessing.

The NWS has confirmed at least 32 reports of tornadoes across the nation's mid-section. This is the largest of very few New Year's Eve tornado outbreaks.

General Weather Chat / New Year's Eve Severe Weather Outbreak
« on: December 31, 2010, 12:16:26 PM »
Early this morning, a tornado caused significant damage to the town of Cincinnati, Arkansas. 3 people are confirmed dead in the town, five have been injured. This is the first deadly New Year's Eve tornado since 1976.

Two tornado watches are in effect for the mid-section of the country until 3 PM CST today. Another tornado watch is anticipated within the hour.

Tornado warnings are in effect in Missouri and Illinois.

If anyone else has any news on these storms, please feel free to post it here.

Hurricane Central / 2011 Hurricane Season Outlook Released
« on: December 30, 2010, 12:39:33 PM »
I saw that this thread could get shut down on New Year's Day, so I wanted to bring this in. Colorado State University issued their predictions for the 2011 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season. The predictions point to almost as active a season as we had in 2010. My question for aspiring (or actual) meteorologists: do you agree, or do you have a different prediction?

My prediction is just a little lower:

14 Storms
6-7 Hurricanes
3-4 Major
