General Discussion / Re: The State of the Union

I find it interesting that Democrats and Republicans are going to be seated together. It will make for awkward standing ovation situations.

In just 24 hours, President Obama will deliver his State of the Union address. Last year, he made some pretty bold promises to Americans dealing with the economy, health care, and other issues. How does he stand up in your eyes?

From an economic stand-point, he's done a pretty good job. Check out this article:

@Localonthe8s I just said that I haven't been to Australia OR Antarctica. I didn't say anything else in that. Quoting problem, my bad.

Hmm, the green wall seems intriguing...you know, just because I don't know much about broadcasting, I'll say #1.

I've taken part in a regional weather broadcast.
I've celebrated the 4th of July in the hometown of Frederic Bartholdi, the designer of the Statue of Liberty.
I've been to every continent except Australia.

Yeah, it's #3. I haven't been to Antarctica OR Australia.

#3?

I have had 4 pets throughout my lifetime.
My favorite TWC show is Day Planner.
I am getting an iPhone for my birthday.

TWC Fan Art / Re: plane852's Intellistar 2 Concepts
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:22:02 PM »
I'm taking a small break from the Intellistar 2 emulations to announce a new project. As some of you might know, I run a forecasting office for my local school. I'm making, from scratch, a completely unique version of the local on the 8s. I'll show you picture of it as it begins to take shape. Right now, it's in the brainstorm stage.

Secondly, I'm putting out an offer. If anyone has an emulation concept with the Intellistar or Intellistar 2 that they'd like to see done, respond to this and let me know, so I can work on it and release it to the public. If I can, if its okay with the mods, I'll send the template to the requester so they can use it for themselves. NOTE: If you are going to send me an emulation concept, I need transition times. See the example below.

:00 Current Conditions
:08 8-City Observations
:16 National Doppler
:24 Regional Doppler
etc.

WOW! Looks really appealing, easy to follow, and not a whole lot of information being thrown at you at once, like the original IS2. This is really, really good!

Forecasting / Re: Ask The Weather Expert!

More questions yet again!

1.) I've recently been told that when there is a 50% chance of rain, it means that 50% of your area or county is going to get some rainfall. Is that right, or does it really imply that there is a 50% chance that the entire county or area will see rainfall?

2.) Since tornado season is starting to crawl up, what are some ideal signals from models that signify the potential for tornadoes? I know high CAPE is one thing, but are there any other key signals?

General Weather Chat / Re: In need of Weather Systems 101
« on: January 17, 2011, 06:39:53 PM »
I can't answer every part of that question, but I can tell you what I do know. In the United States, weather generally moves west to east. If I had to guess, it would probably be because of the movement of the jet stream. That would probably carry systems from the west to the east. Europe would probably see something similar, but not the same. I can't say for sure what happens over there.

With hurricanes, storm systems buck the trend and move mostly from east to west. This is because of easterly winds, which blow westward. The storms are pushed by these winds to the west. The usual turn to the Northeast is thanks to the Coriolis effect, which is a deflection of an object on a rotating plane. This deflects hurricanes to the "right," relatively speaking. And yes, these storms can and do affect Europe. The remnants of Hurricane Maria in 2005 caused significant rainfall in Norway that killed three. Hurricane Vince, in the same year, impacted Spain and Portugal.

In the Southern Hemisphere, I would assume that everything is switched over. Weather systems move from east to west in the land Down Under. Hurricanes (or Willis Willis, as they are called by Australians. The country's weather service calls them cyclones.) down there move from west to east, carried by the westerlies, and deflect to the "left," turning back to the west and following regular patterns.

This is just a guess. Patrick, am I right on this?

Sorry, folks, but the project has been terminated. I'm going to try and archive radar images for 2010 and start the 2011 project. Feel free to delete this thread, mods.

Chattanooga saw some pretty stunning records in mid-October, when we had 2 or 3 days when the mercury broke the century mark. The local newspapers made a big deal out of it.

There's been no breeze here in over a month.

Why does it seem that everyone I know is clueless?
